Hypoglycemia and insulin resistance

Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia and insulin resistance

hypoglycemia

Avatar m tn Although insulin levels were never extraordinarily high, the increase between the 2nd and 3rd hours seems to be abnormal and indicative of delayed insulin response, a pattern associated with insulin resistance. Several years ago I had elevated cortisol throughout the day. Last year, is was below range for most of the day. It seems to have flip flopped, while DHEA has stayed consistently borderline high (but still in range) and testosterone is elevated.
Avatar f tn Hypoglycemia is a sign of having insulin resistance...meaning that you become insensitive to insulin. So the pancreas produces l;arger amounts of insulin to be able to keep your blood sugar under control and ends up producing too much....which causes low blood sugar. Eventually the pancreas gets tired and can't continue the fast pace and it slows down...your blood sugar goes up ...until it's high enough to give you a diagnosis of diabetes. Learn about insulin resistance...
1033523 tn?1258035082 Normally there are no antibodies to insulin. If you have IgG and IgM antibodies against insulin, your body reacts as if the insulin is foreign. This may make insulin less effective, or neutralize it. Normal values are 5-20 mcU/mL while fasting; values may differ per laboratory. Check your lab results paperwork for the exact ranges. As far as daily testing, it's to early to tell until the doctor exams your test results. Good luck and let us know everything goes.
Avatar n tn Type 2 is most often associated with adult-onset and can be a combination of insulin resistance (most often in overweight folks) and also sluggish/impaired insulin production. Type 2s are sometimes treated with insulin, sometimes with oral meds, sometimes both, and always in combination with diet & exercise.
Avatar n tn Have you heard of insulin resistance? This may be partially to blame for hypoglycemia if it is "rebound", meaning her blood sugars may not sharply exceed the high levels, but if she eats a heavy meal -especially one high in simple carbohydrates- several hours later it "crashes" giving her hypoglycemia. It was explained to me that the insulin triggers becomes overreactive and dump a large amount of insulin in response to the free sugars in her system.
Avatar m tn It is a long shot but, insulin resistance could be a possibility. Symptoms of insulin resistance are; high cholesterol, dark pigmentation in folds of skin or like mine where my clothing rubs, skin tags, trouble with being over weight, and high blood pressure.
1034736 tn?1319559035 Many who suffer from hypoglycemia have polycystic disease of the ovary associated with insulin resistance. Increased insulin levels can cause hypoglycemia. Excessive alcohol intake, hepatitis, kidney disease, certain medications, disorders of adrenal gland etc can all cause hypoglycemia. It can also be caused by poor eating patterns. Rarely is it caused by insulin secreting tumors called insulinomas.
Avatar n tn 1. Why he is treating insulin resistance without diabetes so aggressively and 2. If you were that insulin resistant you wouldn't have been able to lose weight so easily that the doctor commented it was too fast. I would make sure the doctor explains to you what he is treating and why. I would absolutely want clarification (by A1C test) as to whether you have diabetes.
865758 tn?1285952904 That is totally within the normal range! Even if your doctor anticipates you having insulin resistance and proceeding to develop diabetes you aren't there yet. It would be much more appropriate to recommend a combination of diet for weight loss, cutting carbs and exercise. I'm going to research Insulin Resistance to see if I'm missing something, but that is what I'm seeing now. You need to ask your doctor to explain his treatment and what he is seeing in your medical picture.
Avatar n tn This situation is fairly common when people are dealing with insulin resistance. It can lead to type 2 diabetes, and many people do suffer from hypoglycemia before developing type 2 diabetes. Other people never develop type 2 diabetes at all, but remain hypoglycemic. Your best actions are to do what you can to prevent the lows while also doing what you can to prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Avatar n tn you can recommend fasting and oral glucose resistance test and can repeat more than one time to fully diagnosed with insulin resistance. but remember that your pcos condition can be a risk for insulin resistance onset. keep going with this diet plan, and keep exercised. always keep in touch with your gp for further assistance and lifestyle changes plan. http://www.all-about-beating-diabetes.com/insulin-resistance-treatment.
Avatar f tn I am on a strict high fiber low glycemic diet for insulin resistance. I also take medication for insulin resistance and low thyroid. I take medication for insulin resistance because my diet and exercise alone wouldn't control my low blood sugar attacks. I am far from fixed because until I lose the 30 lbs of fat I will continue to have these problems.
Avatar n tn t produce ENOUGH insulin, while others are diabetic because of insulin resistance (usually because of insulin resistance in overabundant fat cells). So your pancreas is working. If it were not, you would be taking insulin. But your type 2 status means that it is not working optimally. From what I have read, it appears that often people who are type 2 have periods when developing the problem where they can get hypoglycemic because the pancreas is too easily stimulated and overproduces insulin.
Avatar f tn My diet is constant snacks like yogurt, almonds, cottage cheese, veggies and very little fruit because that spikes my sugar and then it drops, chicken, lean beef and I love beans on salads and things. I want to see results so badly!
Avatar n tn is essential to balance blood sugar - deficiency is strongly linked to hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, pre diabetes and diabetes; a common deficiency symptom with a thyroid imbalance (notably hypothyroidism); causes high blood pressure. Avatar n tn s period actually are insulin-inhibitors, causing insulin resistance. Some women produce more of these hormones than others. In some women, the glucose levels run higher for several days, and then are followed by hypoglycemia when these hormones dissipate. At 16, your daughter is still maturing, and her hormone levels are still fluctuating.
2104507 tn?1333752737 If insulin is detectable, the indication is insulin resistance, which means your body is producing insulin, but using it. Talk to your doctor about this. Insulin resistance is generally, but not always associated with weight gain, even though type I diabetes is associated with weight loss. You don't have to have diabetes in the family to have it.
Avatar m tn After 2 years of seeing many doctors I found an Endocrinologist that diagnosed me with inflammation of the thyroid with normal blood levels, reactive hypoglycemia and insulin resistance. You said you had your thyroid checked but, what tests did the doctor actually do? Did he or she check your thyroid antibodies, free t- 4, free t-3 and TSH? Did they check your pituitary hormones?
Avatar n tn Hi, I am a 28 year old, caucasian female, and was recently put on Glucophage 1000mg BID for insulin resistance. I originally went to the Endocronologist because of one of my nursing professors, who called me out in class, palpated my thyroid, and told me it was enlarged. I had a thyroid scan done at the doctors office, which he said looked ok, but I had a small cyst on it, which he stated was normal. My TSH, T3 and T4 came back within normal limits for the lab values.
Avatar f tn In summary, hepatitis C promotes insulin resistance and INSULIN RESISTANCE INDUCES INTERFERON RESISTANCE, steatosis and fibrosis progression. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17131467?ordinalpos=14&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum "Other measures can be taken to enhance svr probabilities in the the face of negative predictors." Like what?
Avatar m tn Many women who suffer from hypoglycemia have polycystic disease of the ovary associated with insulin resistance. Increased insulin levels can cause hypoglycemia. Poor eating patterns too can be a cause. Other rare causes are insulin secreting tumors or insulinomas, and certain medications. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. You need a 24 hr glucose monitoring. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn Ordinarily, too much insulin would lead to a low (hypo), but with insulin resistence, the body cannot use the insulin that it has, and for various reasons the pancreas actually produces more insulin leading to an excess of insulin in the bloodstream.
