Common Questions and Answers about How smoking affects the environment

smoking

Avatar m tn I started smoking when I was approximately 16, and quit at the age of 22. The main reasons I quit were because I was joining the military at the time, and I was having breathing difficulty while smoking or in an area of second hand smoke. During the two years away from being around any source of smoke, with lots of exercise, I was in the best shape of my life, was able to run 2.4km in 8:30 min.
Avatar m tn It occurs when tobacco smoke permeates any environment, causing its inhalation by people within that environment. Passive smoking is the act of breathing in secondhand smoke. Every passive smoker is at risk with exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. It causes the maximum damage to near and dear ones by damaging their developing organs, mainly the lungs and brain. Avatar f tn It is well know that smoking at any level significantly affects the ability tissues heal after surgery. Surgery affects to blood supply to operated areas and smoking further complicates and reduces the blood supply to those tissues. While you will likely have no problems with healing, even if you are still smoking, there are definite risks for healing. In addition smoking also clearly affects your pulmonary status and has potential affects when undergoing general anesthesia.
1601804 tn?1297628981 When I went to see my doctor last time due to major health problems (not related to the smoking cause I had the same thing happen before when I was in a smoke-free house), I casually mentioned this to her, and she suggested I talk to the landlord because second hand smoke can lead to serious health issues in the longrun. So I did, and the landlord told me people are allowed to do whatever they want in their own rented unit.
Avatar f tn It is FAR better to quit at ANY stage of pregnancy than to continue to smoke. Smoking has been linked to low birth weight and preterm labor. Both of which would be far more detrimental to your baby than any possible affects of quitting. I speak from experience - I smoked throughout my first pregnancy. My daughter was born at 40 wks 3 days via emergency c-section because there was a lack of amniotic fluid - as in NONE. She was breech and suffered from Intrauterine growth restriction.
1534282 tn?1294328945 There is probably a lot of research out there that addresses the question of how much smoking affects the ability to conceive. There is certainly plenty on how much being a smoker affects an embryo and a fetus, so they would not have overlooked the other aspect.
Avatar m tn Hi there and welcome to the forum! There's no physical dependance to weed, it's all mental. Best of luck to you. xoxoxo. sophie.

Avatar m tn My mom smoked with me and I was 4 weeks early, have asthma, chronic ear infections, and weighed less than 5lbs. I actually did a research paper on the affects of smoking and pregnancy and while some babies may experience minimal affects or some moms might "think" their babies are completely healthy; what they don't realize is that the asthma or allergies their child has is related to smoking while pregnant.
Avatar f tn I make him smoke outside, because i quit for this baby and i dont want it to have meant nothing. Show him the affects secondhand smoke can have on baby, it made my fiance nearly cry and straighten up. Best of luck, if he doesnt want to quit, he wont.
Avatar n tn A positive methacholine challenge test would indicate there is some amount of bronchospasm. Your symptoms could be due to small airway disease, which affects the respiratory bronchioles. Disease of small airways results from exposure to tobacco smoke, mineral dust, air-pollutants, and viral infections. It may also be associated with connective tissue disorders. The pulmonary function tests are abnormal only late in the disease and the damage done is irreversible.
Avatar f tn in the meantime adopt good sleep hygiene measures like going to bed at the same time, waking up at the same time, avoidance of alcohol, smoking and caffeinated beverages. Maintain warm, comfortable bedroom environment and engage in relaxing activities like a warm bath before bed time. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn But trying to sugar coat it as okay is ridiculous. The reality is smoking is bad for you and baby. It can cause low birth weight, increase the risk of SIDS, increase respiratory issues, ear infections etc. I smoked the first 4 months with my first and he ended up with asthma. Again- great job on cutting down! The way I looked at it is there will always be stress. You have to learn healthy coping techniques to help you through- for both you and baby! It's tough but you can do it mama!
Avatar n tn I know they make some really good masks but do not know the names of them. Check into the masks would be my suggestion. And possibly talk to your doctor about your situation. Hope this works out for you. I know it is hard to give up a wonderful opportunity, when you have been given the gift of being an artist. But, also understand you wanting to remain healthy for your children. I will pray you find the answer. God bless.
Avatar m tn I have been smoking tobacco with my friends on the weekends for about a month. I was wondering if I could have caused any permanent or long term damage after only this short time.
Avatar n tn There was a video on youtube on the affects of cig smoke to your baby. My bf seen it and how the baby was trying to escape it in the stomach! Now he wont smoke in the car or let me go anywhere that has smoke. But he never smoked in the house in the beginning. Avatar f tn I've never been a smoker but I'm sure if you Google the affects of smoking while pregnant you will find plenty of stories and ways to help her. I'm sure there will some helpful ladies on her as well.
Avatar m tn All in all you have not been smoking that long, maybe three years. That does not mean that the pain in your chest is not related to smoking, but is more likely due to some other cause. Go to your doctor and have him examine you. It could be angina, for instance.

Avatar f tn Hello, Brown discharge can be due to ovarian problems, hormonal imbalance, stress, anxiety, crashed dieting, use of birth control pills, change in environment, excessive exercise etc. In your case it can be due to hormonal imbalance caused by starting the birth control pills. If the repeat happens then you might have to go for a complete hormone profile and ultrasonography to know the cause of this.
Avatar f tn s what I thought, plus the affects of smoking while pregnant seem to be way worse than the withdrawals to me..
Avatar n tn Vaping is WAY worse for you and the baby than cigarettes are. I'm currently trying to quit; have been a pack and a half a day smoker for years and after a week I'm down to 5 or less a day. If it's just too ******* hard and you have to have a cigarette once in awhile. Do it. It's better than putting other chemicals into your body that your system isn't used to. Vapor isn't just "water" and the "nicotine" is a chemical compound designed to mimic it.
1226884 tn?1272081604 I can understand your worrying concerns about post-stroke recovery. Unfortunately, rehabilitation is the only effective way to help the patient regain function to the possible extent and prevent from permanent losses. If rehabilitation program is appropriately instituted, most of the stroke patients can regain maximum functions with appropriate therapy, training and support services.
Avatar f tn also, how disruptive is all the "drama" when infidelity happens. Like a soap (all due respect here Teko) and the entire home environment automaically becomes dysfuncitional. I'm sure all of this is going to fall into place, but it's going to take a long time for healing, especially the children.
29837 tn?1414534648 s difficult to tell from the article how marijuana affects SVR rates in the subgroups that completed treatment. But given the overall (54%) SVR rate of the marijuna smoking (MS) group, the marijuana didn't seem to hurt. What is odd is very low completion and SVR rates of the non-marijuna smoking (NMS) group which was 29 and 18 per cent respectively. So...
Avatar n tn If you were raised in a home where others smoked....or if you are in an environment, e.g. public place, workplace, where smoking is permitted, you may have incurred a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) from second-hand smoke. Also, working in construction, with asbestos or other related materials, or other occupations where chemicals are present (fiber board, plastic manufacturing, etc) you may have damaged lungs without realizing it.
Avatar f tn I just quit..at 5 weeks im almost 8 now..it was really hard at first cause the craving was serious but everytime I thought of a cig I instantly thought of my baby's health and the fact that I was in the week where its heart started to form I couldn't even imagine picking up another cig knowing that my baby is depending on me to keep its environment as safe as possible.
