Avatar f tn My mum is 79 yrs old and for the past 11 days has had chronic diarrhoea she has visited her GP and a stool sample has been sent to be checked, in the meantime I have started to get a very strong smell of ammonia from her, It reminds me of peroxide and I was nearly smelling her hair thinking she may have had her hair permed, she has also had really bad abdominal pain and loss of appetite and breathlessness, how do I find out if she has high levels of ammonia, I am to believe that if she has it ca
1008841 tn?1293602560 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels. Flowerchild: you can calculate your own MELD score if you have a copy of your lab reports from bloodwork by using this site: http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar n tn He just got back his blood test that show his ammonia level has went from 157 to 300. How high can it go before he goes into a coma or worse? Please help!
Avatar f tn she has continued to take the Lactolose for the past two weeks but today her ammonia level is 150. I would like to find out how high ammonia level can go before it is considered toxic and will cause her to go into a coma? I am also wondering in end stage cirrhosis will the lactolose eventually be uneffective in bringing down the ammonia levels? My final question is what kind of life expectancy is there when the cirrohsis remains at that level?
1184842 tn?1264268787 the brain damage caused by high ammonia levels not to mention accelerated liver damage are not what you want either right? I think the better part of valor is to tolerate the taste so that you can keep your wits about you...unless dymentia, brain fog and liver failure sound good to you.
Avatar n tn When ammonia levels go too high in liver patients, they are given "Lactulose" (also called "Enulose"). Lactulose is a liquid laxative that binds with Ammonia to remove it from a person's system. High ammonia levels can cause everything from dementia, drunkenness, slurred coma, and even death. Ask your doctor about LACTULOSE or ENULOSE for your mother!
Avatar n tn Part of letting then in on my young life was so they would be awair of the differnt things drugs do to a person and the fact that there dad was one of those old drugies from the 60ties. That is my story and all I can say to you D is go with your heart, only you can decide what is best for you. You might also think about if things were turned around and your kids did not tell you.
Avatar m tn Symptoms of HE are forgetfulness, confusion, inverted sleep-wake pattern (sleeping by day, being awake at night), marked irritability, tremor, difficulties with coordination and trouble writing, lethargy and eventually coma. If you can have ammonia without mental symptoms? No. Ammonia levels can be detected with a blood test so it is easy to assess. In summary: No you don't have the indications for ammonia buildup and hepatic encephalopathy (HE).
Avatar n tn But I thought I was tired and confused and forgot alot of thingswhen I was on treatment but, that does not compair to how the high ammonia level makes you feel. The comment the other member made about the protein is so very true and it's a big problem in your ammonia level getting high.I'm sure you know this but keep a close eye on it my doctors in Tulane told me people can go into a coma.So from now on when all I want to do is sleep I have my lab work done.
Avatar n tn I am probably somewhat in denial here because I have a husband that is end stage and I am sure that I know what ammonia levels indicate in someone with cirrhosis. Maybe if you can just say the words to me it will help. I had ammonia levels of 50 the first time I was checked. I was experiencing problems with getting lost when I was driving and confused other times. Can't remember my PO box number, names numbers are difficult. Spelling is becoming quite challenging for me.
30678 tn?1217992847 My Husbands ammonia levels were so high that he started having black outs and memory loss. That is what initially sent him to see a doctor and what subsequently led to his diagnosis. He also took lactulose and in time his levels dropped significantly. I have read on many sites that doctors don't get too alarmed by the levels unless their patients are displaying symptoms of encephalopathy, which obviously my husband was.
1654058 tn?1407162666 Digested blood represents a large protein load in the gut which can lead to higher levels of ammonia and other toxins and, not surprisingly, hepatic encephalopathy is frequent in this setting." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No variceal bleeding or banding. Nadolol is taken a a prophylaxis.
Avatar f tn He is sleeping a lot and still has bouts of confusion, but overall he is clear-headed. Hospice was called in today for a consult. What now? How high can the ammonia level go before coma? Does a high level affect the kidneys? His kidneys are still working good. Other than confusion and risk of coma, what does the high ammonia level do?
30678 tn?1217992847 as you know mine is denying even though I'm already IN IT. I don't know anything about ammonia levels I'm sorry. I just wanted to make sure you had everything ironed out before you start.
Avatar f tn I think I started this post just to ask if he would excrete ammonia in his urine if his levels were high; it's beginning to appear to me that this is the case. Any idea if this is an early or later sign of the progression of this disease? Without him agreeing to see the doctor, I have to depend on the knowledge of others.
5611452 tn?1370974704 From what I've read ammonia levels can affect people differently. Based on my small amount of knowledge, I would say that 78 is medium high, and you may be experiencing some cognitive symptoms, perhaps some confusion, forgetfulness, or irritability. But then again some people nay have lower levels w a lot of symptoms or higher levels w fewer symptoms.
Avatar n tn I am overwright but consider myself athletic. I can smell the ammonia in my nose and on my breath. I've had blood work done and my liver function is normal, ammonia levels normal, blood glucose and a1c is normal. I have been diagnosed with non -alcoholic fatty liver and I have insulin resistance. Anything would be helpful!
Avatar m tn Are you listed for a transplant? As far as hepatic encephalopathy (HE), how do you feel? 286? Wow, that is high. Ammonia levels don't necessarily correlate with HE. What does your hepatologist say about your ammonia level? Xifaxin 550 twice a day, correct? Does the lactulose help? Do you have 3-4 bowel movements a day. Or are you constipated? Do you have other health issues that could be affecting your ammonia levels? Ammonia is produced when proteins are broken down in the intestines.
Avatar m tn Ammonia levels do not always correspond with HE. 75 is not that high. I have ammonia levels that high on a regular basis. Then again I'm sure many on this forum thinks that explains a lot. Vomiting blood due to varceal bleeding in also a common common complication of ESLD. The hospital preformed the TIPS procedure to lessen his portal hypertension which caused your brother's varices to burst. Unfortunately when this procedure is done it can cause HE.

1391441 tn?1333851561 He presently takes Lactulose, but has been hospitalized in the past to help with the high ammonia levels. A low protein diet sometimes helps with ammonia levels, but not always. The only thing that has recently helped my brother with symptoms is the "Alzheimer's patch." I won't mention the name of the medication or the pharmaceutical company, and no--I'm not a rep for the company. It is being used off-label by my brother's doctor and his quality of life has improved dramatically.
Avatar n tn I consider myself lucky because they told me I would die within 5 years of that operation that was done in 1980 and here I sit with a smile on my face.
1391695 tn?1298143389 Ammonia also plays a role in both normal and abnormal animal physiology. Ammonia is biosynthesised through normal amino acid metabolism and is toxic in high concentrations.[51] The liver converts ammonia to urea through a series of reactions known as the urea cycle.
Avatar n tn teri, good luck with your husband's TX. OH, You've mentioned ammonia before and said it can cause brain fog. I looked for it on my labs but can't find it. Is it ever reported under a different name? Is it done with regular CBC's? Do I have to ask for a special ammonia test?
Avatar m tn ) Can anyone out there give me some information on what they have experienced or know of that might help me? Is it possible I could go a long time at these levels? How long before dialysis? I feel great and the only symptoms I have are slight fatigue and a little ammonia breath now and then. I am watching my diet closely. Any insight would certainly be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
Avatar n tn He has encephalopathy. His ammonia levels stay at 160. That creates confusion and talking out of his head at times. He hasn't been able to drive in over 6 months because of the accidents he was having , and getting lost. I guess the worst compliacation he is having at this point is the flapping in his hands. I have to feed him at times. He recently started falling all over his own feet. He has fallen a total of around twenty times in the past month.
14315163 tn?1433901017 None of us likes taking, I took it for 6 years myself, it has a nasty taste, it but if we don't then the HE can not be managed and high ammonia and the resulting brain symptoms will occur which can be fatal if a person goes into a coma. Lactulose is a liquid laxative that binds with ammonia and removes it from the body via stool. Lactulose draws fluid into the bowel (so both cause loose stools.) Generally speaking--- the goal while taking lactulose is to have 2 - 4 bowel movements per day.
Avatar n tn Many patients with high ammonia levels from liver disease develop a condition called hepatic encephalopathy and develop symptoms such as forgetfulness, confusion and lethargy.
29837 tn?1414538248 I had high ammonia levels from cirrhosis. It does make your brian foggy. The thing is, its all so insidious, it happens slowly. So I didn't know how out of it I was until I started taking lactulose to reduce the ammonia. And then, surprise, I stopped taking naps, my brain was working better. Don't deny yourself the possibility of feeling better.
