Your contractions should be 3-5 minutes apart. Which means from the beginning of one contraction until the beginning of the next one is how far apart they are. Don't worry about how long they last. My doctor told me 60-90 seconds but mine never lasted longer than 45 seconds up until I pushed out my son. Mine started out at 2-3 minutes apart I labored at home for 4 hours I didn't leave until I knew it was time.
We came in when my contractions were 20 mins apart (because we live so far from our hospital) and by the time we got here they went from 20 mins apart to 4 mins apart. I am only in my first trimester as a first time momma to be, but I also happen to be a labor and delivery nurse with over 2 years of experience. As your baby becomes more engaged into your pelvis, your hips have to open up more to accommodate that sweet fuzz covered head! Your body is even releasing a hormone called relaxin to help the joint of the pelvis open up. My best advice is warm showers, lots of water (at LEAST 8 ounces every hour you are awake) and sitting/bouncing on a birthing ball!
m 38 +2 and have absolutely no sign of labor apart from extreme fatigue! No contractions at all. Belly does get tense sometimes but I'm not even sure if that's BH? I was 1cm dilated last week I'm going back tomorrow to check, hoping to get some improvement. So ready, I'm so impatient!!!
With my first I had back labor. Contractions were two min apart and I'm only 27 weeks they gave me four doses of a steroid shot to mature her lungs in case I went into labor again and they couldn't stop it she would have a better chance in surviving all I can say is don't stress to much and good luck (:
ve been going in and out of labor since Sunday. Last night the contractions got bad again but eased off and are bad again this morning. If say if you want to see how far you are progressing go be checked to be sure your not dilated too far then if they send you home just try some squats and walking to see if that progresses anything. If you seem to progress fast they may keep you.
If you have contractions your stomach gets hard because of the uterus contracting. It'll kinda make your breathing feel slightly different. To differentiate between braxton Hicks contractions and real labor contractions you need to pay attention to your stomach getting hard and if it's accompanied by pain. You'd feel it get tight. It's hard to miss. You also need to time them. Write down what time they happen and for how many seconds or minutes.

My sil vomited b4 her labor started but this was real contractions every 5 mins... Count how far apart whole resting and drinking water, if close and intense get yourself to the hospital.
Since I have been up this morning (a little after 6) I am pretty sure I have been having contractions about every 20 minutes... They are a little bit of cramping and then tightening of my whole stomach. With my first daughter, I never went into labor. My question is Do contractions come at exactly the same amount of minutes apart? They're all just about, so I'm wondering if it is because they are still farther apart or if it is because they are not "true" labor contractions...
