Avatar m tn Hi there, i had a brain injury in feb and havent had any seizures yet but i was told in order to get back to driving/work etc i might have to take an anti-seizure medication. What medications are there? And i was told by someone else that they will slow down my recovery. because they are stimulants? in what way would they slow it down?
1559533 tn?1308948561 Yes, anti-seizure medications (Tegretol, Gabapentin, Lyrica, etc) are used to treat neuropathic pain (things like Trigeminal Neuralgia or Dysthesias.) They can also be used to treat seizure disorders. They did not seem to effect my diagnosis. They did not effect my neuro exams, MRI, VEP, LP, etc.
794366 tn?1418009395 I exercise everyday on treadmill and elliptical, and I try to watch my sweets intake but if there are medications that work for me they work for a while. I am treatment resistant.
Avatar m tn Hi,i am just wondering,i do know that medications do sometimes work for some sufferes, but from so many point of views, the medical doctors that i have visited so far, they refused to prescribe xanax, benzo and other anti anxiety medications, because they believed medications do nothing on anxiety, they told me that anxiety should not be label as an DISORDER because its not an illness, thats they recommended CBT to overcame Panic disorder etc.
Avatar f tn Evening primrose oil may lower the seizure threshold and use is contraindicated in patients with seizure disorders, schizophrenia, or individuals receiving anti-seizure or anti-psychotic medications. Therefore, before using this herbal supplement for hair loss I would consult your doctor to see if it is appropriate or if they can recommend something else due to you taking Seroquel (which is classified as an anti-psychotic agent).
1045176 tn?1253403447 Yeah... that question really depends on what type of medication you are talking about. The side effect question is something that is not a black and white sort of thing. Side effects can sometimes be minor and sometimes be major... but, if a medication works, sometimes, the benefits of taking a medication can outweigh the cons such as even some terrible-side effects. An example... if someone had Type 1 Diabetes...
Avatar n tn First off Mik, we are not doctors on this side of the forum. If you want to post to an MD, you need to click on the tab at the top of this page that says "Doctors." Buspirone will NOT make you look older. Sorry, but I just have to say this.........where the hell did you get a nutty idea like that? You are taking this med for anxiety, right? If you DON'T take it and walk around for weeks or months or years with what I call the "pinch faced" look of anxiety..........
Avatar f tn Dilantin was toxic to me in even small doses...it made me so sick. That was the first medication I ever tried and it didn't really help so my nuerologist kept increasing my dose despite what I was telling him. Then he put me on Tegretol which caused me to have major balance issues and night paralysis, every night, several times a night...very disturbing.
Avatar f tn I am also on an anti-seizure medication. I recently read somewhere that when your taking an anti-seizure medication, while on birth contol, it make's your birth control not work. I was wondering if this was true or not as I think I am pregnant. Please help me...
Avatar f tn I have taken different blood-pressure medications, antidepressants, anti-inflammatories, beta blockers, Seizure medications, supplements, pain killers, and receive Botox injections every 3 months ( i am sure i missed something). One of the medications even caused me to lose my short term memory ( i am a full-time student). My migraines will last for months at a time.
382218 tn?1341181487 Unfortunately because of the rules in this forum I cannot comment on all the off-label medications which we use, but suffice it to say there are many more and they usually fall under the categories of anti-seizure medications and antidepressants. I do not use cannibinoids, nor do I personally recommend them. As one patient in rural Pennsylvani said very correctly: "MS is a disease that affects the brain, so why would you want to take a medications that affects your brain?
1178983 tn?1279663655 Options for treatment include both medications and physical therapy. Medications include Analgesics, Antidepressants, and Anti-seizure medications. Each of these classes have been associated with relieving the pain associated with fibromyalgia but are not side-effect free and you should have a discussion with your physician to see if an alternative choice is right for you.
486038 tn?1300063367 Can you have an aura without a seizure? 2 different questions, but important. Basically, I just switched to a generic seizure control medication 2 days ago- and today was the first time since last fall that I had an aura (or something) and thought I was going to have a seizure. It happened so fast- I was standing there and suddenly it just waved over me and I thought "NO!!".... it was this weird feeling of odd dejavuah (it's hard to explain) ...
Avatar f tn I am concerned about starting such a young kid on strong pain medications. I would love to work out the cause of the pain. We use heat packs and he has hot showers in the mornings to get him going. I have been trying to teach him meditation because it works for me. I suffer with a similar type of generalized pain of my muscles and joints and no one has been able to tell me why. It scares me that it may be something I have passed on but my pain did not start until I was in my 30s.

Avatar f tn While not curable, many people find long term pain relief through medications, or surgeries, or alternatives such as Accupuncture. I am unfamiliar with the drug you mentioned. Is it an anti-seizure medication? Most doctors give Tegretol, Trileptal, or gabapentin, anti-seizure drugs used "off label" for Trigeminal neuralgia.
Avatar f tn All of which have been managed for the past 12-20 years with various common prescribed medications. The medications he is currently taking have been the same dose for at least the past 10 years. A week ago, he started complaining of joint pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches, and in general he stated "He didn't feel himself.". My mother and I attributed his symptoms to that of heat exhaustion due to his occupation (warehouse work/no air conditioning/Texas heat).
925522 tn?1243968666 I have phenitone infusion every 5 weeks how does this work i feel ill for a couple of ays after is this normal
Avatar n tn I am sure you are aware that there are better medications for both migraines and anxiety and if not, that is something that should be discussed with your physician. The migraines can be much better treated by preventing them with newer anti-seizure medications such as Topomax or Depacote. Blood pressure medications can also be used to prevent migraines depending on the rest of your medical history. Anxiety should be treated with non-narcotic containing medications such as Xanax or Ativan.
Avatar f tn My mind and eyes were clouded over to the extent that I really did not care wheather my actions got me killed or not. Sometimes, the anti-seizures medications really do not allow us to think, see, or behave normally. We either elect to keep taking these drugs for our seizures or we elect to stop taking them and go back to having seizures. With some people having the siezures and dealing with their side effects is better than taking all those Anti-Siezure medication and their side effects.
Avatar f tn Is it ok to lift heavy weights and do strenuous activities? Btw i tried quitting cold turkey but i had seizure at work i was stocker in the frozen section at a grocery store maybe thats why i had a seizure idk.
Avatar m tn Hi my Jake is a 18 month old border collie mix who started having seizures about three months ago. The first seizure was followed by another one two months later. The vet did blood work and diagnosed him with idiopathic epilepsy. She put him on 500 mg of keppra ER twice a day. He had a seizure every two weeks for the next month. When we went back to the vet she put him on 64.8 mg twice a day phenobarbital as well as adding another 500 mg keppra to what he was taking.
Avatar f tn Aside from lithium the vast majority of mood stabilizers are anti-convulsants. How exactly they are related is something just being clinically understood. Bipolar is not related to epilepsy but both (with epilepsy its clearly known) cause an overactivity of certain areas of the brain.
1168718 tn?1464983535 Somatosensory system pain (neuropathic pain) seems to respond better to GABA drugs. GABA drugs are primarily anti-seizure medications that seem to effect the currents in the voltage dependent calcium channels of the nervous system. Different drugs for different types of pain. There are people on this forum that use both. I take a different anti seizure medication (Tegretol) that works by keeping more of the voltage dependent sodium gates inactivated.
Avatar n tn may of 07 was her first seizure. she has had 12 seizures to date. in and out of the hospital. they put her on anti-seizure meds, depakote. she still has seizures. they start off as a bad headache. this past hospital trip she had her headache for 6 days. finally they gave her morphine. then she vomitted and had another seizure. they ran a CAT scan, and an MRI and an EEG. the neuro says they are non-seizures. what does that mean?! her whole body shakes, her eyes roll back.
