1032715 tn?1315984234 Yes preventative research in this area is crucial. Clearly there is a genetic basis to this and there should be further means to understand and prevent alcoholism and substance abuse in general. There is ongoing research as regards preventative vaccines for specific forms of substance abuse but as with all research it will take a while for safe and effective treatments to be available as it is in its early stages: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/04/AR2010010402752.
Avatar f tn Grace, I was reading through some older posts and I have seen that you stated Dr. Halford was doing some interesting research on a vaccine but it was a risky but it was using a live virus. I was wondering if you have any updates on his research? It was mentioned in a post late in 2011. I have tried to find some information online without sucess. Any ideas on the outcome of this? Thanks in advance.
Avatar n tn make a research on google because it may have other meanings on people without hiv like being on window period both immune globulins and vaccine boost are a good thing to do

1032715 tn?1315984234 Chilean researchers say they are developing a vaccine against alcoholism that could be tested on humans starting next year and works by neutralising an enzyme that metabolises alcohol. The genetic therapy is based on aldehyde dehydrogenase, a group of enzymes that metabolise alcohol and are thus responsible for alcohol tolerance, said Juan Asenjo, who heads a team of researchers at Chile's Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics and the private lab Recalcine.

Avatar m tn Do you know if that research is going to continue? I believe I read that Pritelivir was in Phase II trials, so if the research started again what would be a realistic time frame for when the drug could be publicly available? Are there any other more promising drugs in the pipeline that might be available sooner? Another source I have been reading about is Dr William Halford (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/03/herpes-vaccine_n_6791538.
163305 tn?1333668571 Because hepatitis C is more virulent than HIV, no one was confident a vaccine against all the various strains around the world could be developed. But Michael Houghton, the University of Alberta researcher who announced his work today at the Canada Excellence Research Chairs Summit in Vancouver, says his vaccine works against every known strain of the virus.
163305 tn?1333668571 I am so happy to hear of any research for HCV that doesn't include interferon. Thanks to mikesimon for letting me about this one. (May 5, 2009 09:00 PM Taking aim at a leading cause of liver failure in the United States, a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Biologic Laboratories (MBL) of the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) has developed a human monoclonal antibody that neutralizes the Hepatitis C virus (HCV).
Avatar m tn HBV has always been 2nd banana to HCV and HIV in research. We were always in the backseat. LAM, ADV, TDF all came from HIV research. We got lucky that way. We may get lucky with NTZ which is from HCV research. The point is we are lucky to have exisitng treatment options. And if managed well, these treatment options are very effective even in the very long term if your doctors knows how to deal with the resistance issue.
Avatar m tn When you mention "Gileads therapeutic vaccine" did you mean its TollLike7 receptor agonist drug, that is currently in development or do they indeed also have a therapeutic vaccine in development? The TL agonist drug was tested in Woodchucks as presented in Orlando last year and showed very impressive Vl reductions of 3 to 4 logs. I would like to mention that an other TL7 agonist is already approved for skin conditions. Its name is Imiquimod and the brand name.
Avatar f tn 6 million ($49 million) in a European IPO, earmarking its new cash to push a hepatitis B vaccine into pivotal trials and hit the gas on an HIV drug. Avatar f tn One question is since P24and p17 is present does that mean I have been exposed to HIV but am not HIV positive? Or, does it mean I will soon develop the third band? It's sorta confusing with indeterminate and need to retest just prolongs my anxiety, I wish there was just yes or no and not maybe also. Any help or encouragement will be appreciated as the specialist has not returned my calls to set the appointment.
Avatar m tn This subject has a great deal of controversy surrounding it, but I have included a link to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundations which works with HIV/AIDS research around the world. I hope you find your answers or at least some hope............ http://www.hivplusmag.

Avatar m tn I went to a health clinic for an HIV test and was later told I had syphilis. They offered me treatment as well as to get Hep A and Hep B vaccine. I remember the nurse saying something about my results, and I remember asking her- Does that mean I have Hepatitis? I remember getting the Hep B vaccine in middle school. She said no, and I recieved a couple shots over the course of a couple months. I did some research about people that have hepatitis b and pass it become immune.
Avatar f tn Greetings doctor I am actually doing a research paper on HIV for school and with so much info online from one end of the spectrum to the other I figure I would ask a specialist directly a few questions so here it goes... 1-with testing now a days would you consider 6-8 weeks conclusive? 2-do you believe rapid tests are just as reliable as lab based? 3-do you feel oral rapid tests are just as good as blood? 4-what are the most common symptoms you see with onset of HIV?

Avatar m tn INTRODUCTION Mucosal sites represent the primary routes of HIV transmission, yet the oral mucosa appears uniquely resistant to HIV-1 infection. Since the oral cavity is not conducive to either infection or transmission of HIV, characterizing the responsible resistance factors, particularly components of innate immunity, and their mechanisms of action may identify new opportunities for interference with viral acquisition at other mucosal sites.
