Avatar m tn There are a lot of differing ideas on the effectiveness of condoms to prevent HIV. I have seen numbers ranging from 65% to 100% and some crazy ideas such as, "condoms have holes." I have signed up for an HIV test on Tuesday after learning that a one-time sexual partner of mine is in fact HIV+. At the time, I asked the guy if he was "Drug and Disease free" and he replied, "Yes.
Avatar m tn A girl in italy got blood transfer from a HIV positive source. The chances of contracting HIV in this scenario is over 90%. She had PEP treatment for 9 months, and didn't contract HIV. Yes it is true that the duration of a normal treatment is 4 weeks (28 days). A study of monkeys shows that the PEP treatment increases it's effectiveness with the length of the treatment. While a treatment of 28 days was 100% effective in preventing HIV, 10 days was less effective.

Avatar m tn htm Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Including HIV Infection, Latex condoms, when used consistently and correctly, are highly effective in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Avatar m tn Well, since we were getting serious I wanted us to get tested for HIV...he ended up testing positive. I really care for him and want to stay with him, but now I'm freaked out about this one time incident. I don't know what to do. Was I safe? Am I going to be okay? If we have a sexual relationship in the future, if I use condoms will I remain HIV negative? Also, the only other activity we've done since then is that he has given me oral sex without me reciprocating.
Avatar m tn hope you can help. I have taken five weeks ago treatment even though test were negative five days after an oral (receiving hetero) exposure. First if you can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that is true please do.
Avatar f tn 13 days after the event I was examined by my GP and she did not see any signs of herpes/lesions. I was tested for HIV and Herpes 1 & 2 14 days after the event. My results were all negative. Is it safe to move on from this incident? I've had not symptoms other than my mind playing tricks on me.

Avatar m tn My worry was that the SKYN Elite condoms seem and feel too thin, so I was worried about their effectiveness to protect against HIV. If she were not on treatment but I used the condom correctly, would the encounter be considered risky enough to warrant PEP (way past PEP window now) and/or testing?

Avatar m tn biological effectiveness and use effectiveness. The first measures how well a condom protects if it is properly used and doesn't break. Probably 100% or very close to it. "Use effectiveness" measures how well condoms work over time. Because they sometimes break, and other times are not used properly, the protection against HIV over the years is probably around 90%.
Avatar f tn I just received my six month post treatment report and Hep C is not detectable.I hope I remain clear. In the beginning of treatment I swore it wouldn't work and didn't have much hope but look what happened. Please, please try treatment.I was really a sceptic-you just never know. This is the first time I have talked on any forum about my condition, but wanted to encourage you to try.
Avatar m tn Scar revision may be the most appropriate treatment, but other treatment option may also be used (such as steroid injections). A definite treatment plan cannot be suggested without a direct examination. See a local plastic surgeon for an evaluation.
Avatar m tn Personally, I would trust the western blot test. It is not possible to have HIV antibodies and not have the virus. If you can get treatment, take it. Even though your CD4 count is high, I wouldn't wait for it to get lower before seeking treatment. The sooner you get treatment then better. I got treatment very shortly after exposure and have been healthy for the past 23 years, undetectable for at least the past 10 years.
Avatar n tn You must also, focus on the fact that if your partner is HIV negative, there is nothing to worry about. Although, I understand that it is easier said than done, if you could somehow find out about your partner's HIV status?
