Avatar n tn The US rate of HIV transmissions among heterosexuals declined straightly, but it's still making up somewhere around 1/3 of HIV cases in the US. So where unprotected anal/vaginal sex is concerned between men and women, the risk is small but palpable, especially when you factor in the reality that a huge chunk of the country's HIV caseload -- 50%! -- is not being tracked or documented.
Avatar f tn and be worried about all the other STD's way before HIV. I read a 2008 fact that said less then 1% of americans under 50 have HIV...not even 1%!!!
Avatar n tn along with new symptoms like muscle weakness and joint pain. I finally went inafter researching my symptoms, putting two and two together, and talking to my grandmother (she had hashis and cancerous nodules resulting in a TT)—again for blood work. I demanded a thyroid test because I was done, I was miserable. The results came back & here I am. I just started on Levo this week & following up with an endo in July. I recommend getting your thyroid tested ASAP.
Avatar n tn Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) arises more frequently in homosexual and bisexual men than in other groups of HIV-1 infected individuals. Clinico-epidemiologic data indicate that homosexuals often are infected with multiple microbial agents and/or subjected to other antigenic stimuli, preceding or accompanying HIV-1 infection. Signs of immune activation, in fact, frequently have been detected in these individuals, and the onset of KS can precede any sign of immunodeficiency. I just want the dr.
Avatar m tn She told me I was the 4th person that she had sex with, and only one other without protection - her 2 year long boyfriend with whom she broke 1 year before I met her. A month before we have unprotected sex for the first time, she told me she donated blood - I guess this blood is tested for HIV, right? I should feel relaxed by this information, but I don't because the symptoms I have correspond to HIVs symptoms very much. Can you tell me your opinion about it?

Avatar n tn Most people who ask the questions here really are at much greater risk of dying from some unexpected illness (other than HIV/AIDS) or an accident in the coming WEEK than they are of catching HIV in their entire lives.
319532 tn?1250992176 I used to come to this forum many months ago, cuz i thought i caught HIV due to the symptoms i was having, i now know they were due to herpes and not hiv. Now with the dumbest luk in the world am back scared as ever. The prob is i recently had a condom failure with a girl and since then i've been getting the very same symptoms, except fever. Soar throat, muscle and joint pains, headaches, neck pain and one gland in my neck swollen for a couple days.

Avatar n tn Only a three month test will let you know the verdict. In the meanwhile don't worry about symptoms becasue the are useless. I am sorry about our experience because you did what we have been advised to do use a condom but it broke.
Avatar n tn Presuming your partner was not an IV drug user, the risk of an American woman in NYC who is not an IV drug user having HIV is less than 1 in 1000 and each episode of intercourse also carries a risk of infection of only 1 in 1000 exposure even if she was infected. Your exposure was a low risk exposure. As for your symptoms, the world is in the middle of an influenza pandemic and other varieties of non-HIV viral infections also are far, far more common than symptoms due to HIV.
Avatar n tn I did a home access test about 5 1/2 weeks after the incident which was negative. The day after I received the results I started experiancing constant pressure in my head and feelings like I was about to faint (I'd also experianced this when I had gonnorea). These lasted for about 10 days (I also had a couple days of diarreah), my doctor said I was probably having tension headaches with anxiety attacks.
Avatar m tn And beyond the timing since exposure is the time since onset of symptoms. The HIV antibody tests are always positive within 1-2 weeks after onset of symptoms. There are no exceptions to these generalizations." As I have said, I took the test 21 days after exposure(Oral only) - and probably two weeks or maybe less after I had some symptoms (head aches, swollen, skins sores). Test was negative. Questions: do you agree with your colleague, about test results in 1-2 weeks after symptoms?
Avatar n tn i am terrified of having HIV...i'm waiting for the 3 month time to go get tested but the anxiety and worry is killing me...just want to know what my odds are of being infected.. Oh i know this doesn't count for much, but i got a really bad cold two weeks after the encounter. Thanks!!!
Avatar n tn my symptoms are also consistent with a flare up of my EBV infection so it could be just that - but i'm worried that perhaps i have contracted HIV and i'm having a flare-up of EBV due to contracing HIV and i'm now in the primary HIV stage. sorry to babble - but i'm freaking out and i'm stuck on this ship for another 3 weeks and don't know where to turn. your advice is greatly appreciated - thank you!
Avatar n tn And the odds probably are 100 to one she didn't have HIV (in most commercial sex workers in the US, around 1% are infected). And you did use a condom, which is virtually 100% protective when properly used and it doesn't break. Specific replies to your questions: 1) Does this sound like ARS? No. Your doctor was right. 2) You didn't need the PCR test; I would have recommended against it.
Avatar n tn after 4 weeks: 60-65 % after 6 weeks: 80 % after 8 weeks: 90 % after 10 weeks : 95 % after 12 weeks: nearly 100% I think we use the SAME tests here in 'modern' europe as in america. (3 rd generation and 4 th generation) So from where YOU have your numbers and why you are so sure about "6 weeks is nearly 100%" ??? I had a risk 6 weeks ago (unprotected sex). The 4th generation test (combined antibody/antigen test) was negative after 6 weeks.
Avatar n tn I notice that I have one pea sized (also hard) lymph node in my left groin thats been there for a month or so. 1.) Did I get tested for the right thing? Was HIV-1 test all I needed at the 3 month mark? b/c hearing about all the HIV-2 talk in the forums is scaring me. 2.) I'm afraid the sore in my throat is a canker sore. I heard that's a possible sign of HIV. Is that true? 3.
Avatar m tn Ive read that ARS symptoms varies duration, severity from person and case basis, Given the above scenario,(2) Is there any case of such even after the ARS had passed a month ago? (3) Can fatigue lingers for a while, as in months after the ARS (concurrent symptoms) has paases? (4) Can somebody actually feel the actual seroconversion based on sudden small burst or popping of blood/veins?
Avatar n tn He said HIV prevelance is very low in females but more in homsexuals here. He sugested for a CBC/ALT/urinalysis. 16th April 2007: CBC showed Hemoglobin 172.0 g/l Hematocrit 0.52 rbc 6.6 wbc 5.6 Eoisonphils 0.04 Neutrophils 0.64 Lymphocytes 0.27 Monocytes 0.05 Platelet count 156 X 10^9/l ALT 95 - very high Urinalysis was normal.
Avatar m tn (This is because I returned to Qatar on 14th May 2010 and in our apartment we use to put Ac on 15 degree, I knew that this AC thing is annoying me, some other people who were living with me they also had some throat problem and cough, But I did check up and doctor told me that your sore throat is due to bacteria infection, but after two three days it become worse and painful and due to this I had fever for 2 days which go and come for 3 to 4 hours with shivering and sweat, And I finally recove
480448 tn?1426952138 3 months will give a person with an exposure a conclusive result. If a person does not test POS for HIV 3 months after an exposure, then they did not contract HIV. The ONLY exception to this is people who have literally NO immune system who may take longer to produce antibodies. This would include an extremely small portion of the population, and would include situations such as....
Avatar m tn And that the probability of getting a false +ve in a PCR test is 1 out of 100, and in a 28 day DUO is 1 out 4000. Plus all the false positives are verified with a confirmatory test. Now let's be realistic-- what are the odds of someone getting a false +ve in a PCR post 10-14 days (which looks for HIV virus DNA/RNA) and then a DUO (that looks for antibodies)? (.01)(0.00025) = 0.0000025. Let's increase that probability by 10 times, to give a margin of error. This makes it 0.000025 or 99.
Avatar n tn I do plan on getting tested again soon in the upcoming month of May. I pray that I am HIV negative. I would hate to ruin my life like this. I am praying everyday for help to understand what is happening to me.
3191940 tn?1447272317 “The risk of HIV, if your partner is HIV-positive, is around 1 in 10,000. That's equivalent to giving BJs to infected men once daily for 27 years before transmission might be likely.” Neither recommend testing. Here is a study of serodiscordant couples that supports their recommendation: I suggest that you give events like this the same concern as you might to being trampled in an elephant (which is probably none).
Avatar f tn So let me make sure I understand this correctly, if someone is experiencing acute hiv n gets tested at 2 weeks after exposure it is possible if they do in fact have hiv for the test to be positive, correct?
Avatar m tn Back 3 months, i have received unprotected oral from thai csw. Today i tested all stds and hiv.. Hiv and others stds all negative but HSV type -1 test positive. I'm so afraid and depression right now... What should i do with this herpes? My family don't know i get infected.. i dont want to infect them too... Pls some give some tips and advise... 1) Can hsv-1 kill me on future? 2) How to avoid to spread this hsv 1? 3) Can i die with no getting treated?
Avatar m tn i had also a single encounter with a female who later tested positive, i had all sorts of funny symtoms and tested for hiv 13 times for one year all the reports were negative, basically hiv is a very hard to transmit virus , and in fact more than 1 million virus particles should sucessfully enter your blood stream to infect you which can happen only in multiple exposures and not in a single exposure.
