Avatar n tn I heard the number of people with HIV/AIDS in the US is around 800,000 to 1,800,000, does anyone have a more precise estimate? I thought this stat could chill those who are worrying cause, if there are 300,000,000 people in america, then only .3 to .6 percent of people have HIV/AIDS with many of them being gays and african american, not to scare those who are either of those two, but whatever u are, its still rare really rare compared to other parts of the world.
Avatar m tn Bob had chosen his words very carefully when answering a question on HIV risk and statistics, for everyone to understand, but sadly it is evident that this subject is still causing confusion and angst. I have a great deal of respect for Dr. Bob, who has a considerable amount of experience and expertise, with his whole life devoted to the subject. I for one would not even attempt to challenge his views or have any reason to do so.
Avatar n tn Just wanted to share...I had a one-time "significant exposure" to HIV in the early '90s. I hooked up with an ex who knew he was HIV positive but he didn't tell me. (And he wasn't just any ex; he had been my first when I was 14.) A year later, a month before my wedding, my ex's family called to tell me he had AIDS. I was so scared and even considered cancelling my wedding. I got tested and remained negative a year later.
Avatar n tn Most people who ask the questions here really are at much greater risk of dying from some unexpected illness (other than HIV/AIDS) or an accident in the coming WEEK than they are of catching HIV in their entire lives.
Avatar m tn She says she's a virgin, and I believe her. I tested negative for HIV while giving blood in October 2007. Since then I have become sexually involved with another woman (woman B) as well. The sex has been unprotected and includes vaginal, oral & anal. Woman B says she tested negative for HIV in August 2007, and has not engaged in any risky behavior, such as sex without a condom since, before getting involved with me. I am currently involved with both women.
Avatar n tn Hand to vagina masturbation is no risk. ...Sound like there should be very few people in the world that has HIV. But as a matter of fact, there are 40 million people affected with HIV world wide. How do you explain that?
Avatar f tn HIV statistics in major US cities/states are available via their public health departments, if you search for them. About 85% of new cases are in major metro areas. For example, NYC: http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/ah/hivtables.shtml SF: http://www.sfdph.org/dph/files/reports/default.asp LA: http://www.publichealth.lacounty.gov/phcommon/public/reports/rptspubdisplay.cfm?unit=hiv&ou=ph&prog=hae Miami: http://www.dadehealth.org/discontrol/DISCONTROLmonthlyrep.
Avatar n tn It's so odd how they put World AIDS Day between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I read through the statistics released for World AIDS Day events and the numbers all point to the fact that everyone--gay,straight,confused, male, female, hermaphro, whatever--should err on the side of getting tested.
Avatar n tn See, people on this forum also get mad when sexual preferences are correlated with HIV transmission but with the links posted above, one can almost certainly say that SUBTYPE B which is the msjor HIV infector in developed world, heterosexuals have little to worry as compared to homosexuals. But, when SUBTYPES A,C,D & E come into picture, it doesn't matter whether you are a heterosexual or homosexual. I hope I made some sense at least...
Avatar m tn Health authorities everywhere classify oral sex as a "low risk" activity. It is in actuality an academic approach. Purely theoritical. In the history of HIV/AIDS, spread over three decades, there is no proven evidence that someone acquired the infection through oral sex alone. What has been gathered through experience, statistics and records, HIV is tranmitted though 1. Unprotected anal and vaginal sex 2.
Avatar f tn A recent news from News Of the World Paper- States that 1 in 10 have HIV in london.
Avatar m tn HIV-2 is transmitted much less frequently by Mother to child transmission and sexual route than HIV 1 5.
Avatar n tn At your age you have more to worry about from being shot in the head by all the people in Texas who own guns. Put it in perspective. There are people in the world who face real and present HIV risk -- people who had unprotected sex repeatedly, people who shot up on heroin, people who had blood transfusions, kids born to people who had HIV. You are not one of those people.
Avatar n tn While I agree with everyone on this thread who expressed outrage over the seeming racism of the white South African's comments, I can't see much difference between his reasoning and the general reasoning of the advice on this forum, when people are told that gay and bi men are innately at greater risk of HIV, merely by *being* gay and bi.
Avatar m tn I can just say that this kind of question (scared for HIV after oral sex) is the most popular in ALL the world HIV forum and all of these has finished with a negative test! This is the std risk chart of the SANFRANCISCO CITY CLINIC: there is not hiv from the disease that is possible to contract after receive oral sex! Hope I help you! http://www.sfcityclinic.org/stdbasics/stdchart.asp ps: I apologize for my english!
Avatar m tn I'm a little anxious. Yesterday I spent 2 hours with a 25 year old Serbian escort girl while on vacation in Italy. She was very nice and seemed very healthy. We had vaginal sex twice (with 2 different condoms), and I went down on her. The condom was completely intact both times and I was careful to make sure it was on. She insisted on using condoms, which I take as a good sign. She did not give me oral sex and she did not have any lesions or bleeding anywhere.
Avatar m tn Thinking about HIV, odds, statistics and symptoms. I want to move on. I am stuck in a nightmare of my own making. I know this has been a bit of a rant. I’m hoping it will help (me and others). But at the moment, I’m at a loss.
Avatar n tn Your exposure was very low risk and the chances you actually contracted HIV from this exposure are minimal at best. Read the posts on the HIV forum for more on statistics (the previous poster is right) and for Dr. Handsfield's comments on similar situations. However, I doubt you'll find any of it reassuring, because I think the real issue is your guilt. You're *torturing* yourself over one teeny encounter. My suggestion would be to get off the internet and seek counseling.
Avatar m tn Use a condom consistently and correctly and you won't have to worry about contracting HIV. Won't matter if the person you had sex with has HIV/AIDS or not.
Avatar n tn My regular physician knows NOTHING about HIV. She just says "come back in December for a 6 month test." I asked her if they see many HIV/AIDS patients and she just said "the AIDS epidemic is rising" and then didnt answer my question. I have never felt so alone as I did when I tried to talk about HIV with my doctor.
Avatar m tn so i can be sure and stop worrying about it communityeducator5: I have been working in this field since the mid 90's and am trained as an HIV prevention educator. We are the official HIV educational phone site for the state of Minnesota. You: O ok communityeducator5: If I thought you were at risk for HIV, it would be my job to encourage you to get a test.
Avatar n tn sorry about all the emotions that are flooding your head and heart right now...this is a difficult place to find yourself in. my son was diagnosed a few months ago with HIV but his g/f tested negative out to three months. who knows exactly "when" he got it...he just got it. he was unfaithful to his g/f many times because of his meth addiction. and NO ppl, he did not shoot up. he also spent time in prison on drug charges and had several tattoos while there...
Avatar m tn For one thing, he is ready to go public with his HIV status when he speaks at a local World AIDS Day vigil on December 1. And he says that an hour after he takes his Atripla at night, "the room goes bendy, and an inferno starts in my body and I can't get to sleep." (Feeling high and having too-vivid dreams are common side effects of Sustiva, one of the three drugs in Atripla.) To quell the "inferno," he smokes pot. "It's not addictive like sleeping pills," he says.
Avatar n tn so 1,500 people are at potential risk and perhaps 1 will get it cause there is a 1 in 2000 chance of obtaining HIV from a person with HIV during vaginal intercourse. Then it may get passed on to the wives or through homosexual contact. But I greatly exaggerated all my stats in order to come up with this Value. How are people getting this diseases if the odds are always in your favor? On average how much of the World population is having sex a day?
Avatar m tn Although a small percentage of prostitutes may be HIV positive, William Darrow, CDC AIDS epidemiology official, cites no proven cases of HIV transmission from prostitutes to clients.(8)" Sounds a little optimistic to me.
Avatar m tn I live the real world of HIV and AIDS and have for 26 years. Just look at all the people that have been prosecuted for non disclosure, then you come back and tell me people tell their status.
Avatar m tn I JUST NEED TO KNOW ,IS IT POSSIBLE TO CATCH HIV FROM A BOTTLE OF RUM IV ITS BEEN CONTAMINATED BY SOMEONE THAT HAS HIV...... CAN HIV LIVE INSIDE A BOTTLE OF RUM ..... AM I JUSS BEING EXESIVELY PARANOID OR WHAT ???HIV ANXIETY SYNDROME.....
Avatar m tn >HIV-infected people are living lots longer and not dying from AIDS in a relatively short time. Yes, if they have access to modern treatment. Without treatment (for example in previous years, before invention of anti-retroviral therapy) their prognosis was poor for almost all patients.
Avatar m tn No one in the world deserves the fear of such a crude disease, whether you're facing it, or living with it. My heart goes out to anyone impacted by HIV and aids.
