Avatar m tn How did he know that he got HIV? Did he get the HIV test after he found out she died of AIDS? Did he put his wife at risk of HIV?
Avatar n tn I have been doing some reading online about hiv transmission. I have a few questions. About what is the total population of the USA that has hiv or aids (it looks to be relatively small though large for the seriousness of the disease)? How much of that is heterosexually transmitted? When looking at the data they refer to heterosexual transmission as high risk behavior. Do they mean just unprotected or many partners or with people know to have hiv.

The article (http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/211873-overview ) also gives a rough timeline of the different stages of HIV infection. Day 0: A person is infected with the HIV virus.
Avatar m tn Dear Dr, Three weeks back I had as sexual encounter with a local escort and later got to know that she was HIV+.
480448 tn?1426952138 I am very honored to be a regular contributor on the HIV Prevention Forum here at MH. The forum is very busy, and we often get the same inquiries over and over. I figured that putting together a journal entry covering the most popular topics, and just laying out the facts may be helpful. I also invite Lizzie Lou and Teak to share their thoughts, and to cover anything I may have missed.
Avatar m tn So I see I must be HIV-positive, the doctor took several bottles of blood from me, is there a way when they think I could have gotton the HIV. Since I am HIV-Reactive (positive) does this mean I have the Aids Virus or if I'm not treated I could get Aids.
Avatar n tn You know your partner didn't have HIV. However, you don't mention your own HIV test result. If not done, of course you should do it -- not because I suspect you really have HIV, but because you obviously need the negative test result for anxiety relief. Feel free to return one more time to report your HIV test result. Otherwise this thread is closed.
Avatar n tn Regardless of what you probably have read online, symptoms never are a reliable indicator for or against HIV infection. (Howeverr, your symptoms do not particularly suggest HIV to me.) You need a blood test to know and symptoms simply are not helpful. Since your exposure was a month ago, you can get tested now. You wasted your money on the PCR test; a standard blood test (for one tenth the cost) would have been sufficient.

Avatar m tn Viradai contains three different antiretroviral substances effective in the therapy of retroviruses (RNA-containing viruses), such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV replication is carried out by the action of the virus-specific enzyme reverse transcriptase. These substances inhibit the action of these enzymes. Viraday tablets contain three active ingredients – antiretroviral drugs used to treat HIV infection: (Efavirenz + Emtricitabine + Tenofovir).
Avatar n tn 3) Yes, especially with alcohol. But you can't get infected by drinking live HIV anyway. 4) Of course not. No prolonged discussion, please. There is no additional information you can provide that would change my opinion.
Avatar m tn Dear Mr XXXX from what you tell me it seems unlikely that you have received an HIV -infection at this past event. HIV-antibody -tests become usually positive up to 6 weeks after infection and remain positive thereafter. To confirm the data finally you can ev let make an HIV-PCR assay, direct virus detection, highly sensitive. If also this is negative (what is likely) I would exclude that you had been infected with HIV in this past event described.
Avatar n tn 5. Could my wifes scabs be not early sign of HIV but onset of AIDS? 6. Is sudden receding gums a symptom of HIV? Thanks so much Dr. H for being there for everyone during our trying times. Your service has been great for me because the Health Dept takes two weeks to get results back. I have been painfully waiting with this hanging over my head.
Avatar m tn hi everyone, Well, my story is about aids. When i was with my Xgf, we were both virgins. She told me that she never had sex. i told her neither me. We did it the first time with condom. It was a bit hard to insert my penis, but when i did, she bled a lot. I didn't ejaculate, it was hurting her, she wanted to stop. The second time, also with condom, we did it, she bled didn't ejaculate, she was hurt.
Avatar n tn See many other threads about HIV risk from oral sex (search "oral sex", "cunnilingus", "HIV risk", etc). Your risk is about zero and your symptoms almost cerrtainly aren't due to HIV.
Avatar n tn *The course of the disease varies from person to person. Maybe Dr. H can answer the 4-year question better, but I think there's no steadfast rule. *3-months after infection, just about everybody has antibodies to the virus. It's the first few weeks after being infected when the viral load shoots up, very high, and a person is extremely infectious. The body hasn't developed mechanisms to keep the virus in check yet.
Avatar m tn The things people write online about Esophageal Candidiasis and HIV are out right terrifying! Please help! I just want to lay in bed and cry all the time now.
Avatar n tn Thanks, I'm sort of still freaking out. I keep reading all this language about condoms being "very effective," and whatnot. Geex, what the hec is "very effective?" We are talking about an incurable disease (HIV), not something that you can take 10-day course of antibiotics. I'll stay in school, but seriously, all joking aside, now that I'm HIV positive, who cares about girls in college.
480448 tn?1426952138 Too add to that, in 18 years of being a nurse, I've worked closely with several wonderful ID docs, also specializing in HIV/AIDS, most for quite some time...some with 30+ years in the medical field, specializing in infectious diseases. Their comments were the same. While they often said they wouldn't be comfortable saying something was impossible (that's a doctor thing), they all said that oral sex carried no risk.
Avatar m tn Just a little confused about HIV risk and infection. I've read that HIV is extremely difficult to contract, that the chances of infection are around 1 in a 1000 through unprotected vaginal sex with an infected partner. If that is the case, why are so many people infected? I've read that around 1 million people in the U.S. are believed to be HIV positive. In some Sub-Saharan African countries the infection rate is 30%.
Avatar n tn There is all this guilt and stigma associated with HIV that makes people see it much differently than cancer or diabetes. Plus the money of course. There is just way too much money and politics involved with HIV, like nothing else out there. But from the medical standpoint - it doesn't matter, a disease is a disease. This one happens to be preventable of course.
Avatar n tn Thank you, hboy. While the lack of fever comment is appreciated, is there something to be done about the misreading, other than posting another question?
Avatar n tn However, I can only speculate and repeat my advice that you see a health professional and not try to sort it out through online advice. But I wouldn't worry about HIV.
Avatar n tn I should say that I had a PCR test done, at the 28 day mark, at the behest of an infectious disease specialist in Washington, DC. He specialized in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, and I had the blood drawn right in his office. When the results came back negative, he told me to put the whole thing to bed. I asked him about the use of this test, as I had done a bit of reading on the subject, and he said that while the test is not FDA approved for diagnostic testing, he used it for that purpose.
Avatar f tn To get to my questions, my boyfriend recently travelled to Rwanda for 4 weeks on a human rights delegation and worked with a group of young HIV positives to raise awareness of safe sex and support for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. He just returned and Ive been spending some time with him but have been unable to bring myself to have sex with him due to my fears and I cannot talk to him about it because I know he would be upset if I asked.
Avatar n tn I myself received a blowjob, from a potential HIV-woman 10 days back and now I keep thinking about it, and I have reason to believe im making up my own symptoms - so could anyone easy my mind a bit and give me an explanation ? And of course, an answer, is there any risk of getting HIV from receiving a blowjob from a potential HIV-woman (lasted 5 min.
Avatar n tn Given my sordid history I am not asking about ARS symptoms but about what I fear may be HIV symptoms and that I may have lived through the non-symptomatic phase. And of course I will get tested, but I am hoping to grasp at some straw that what I am experiencing may not be HIV after all. I would like you to comment on my risk probability. I have seen the 1:1000 figure for a single act.
Avatar n tn You don't say the sex of your anal sex partner, but I'm assuming you are a gay man, therefore your exposure was high risk--unless you know your partner is HIV negative. (Did you ask?) (Of course any asking should have been done before having sex with another guy, not after....) I'm not sure where your figure about 5-15% of people with new HIV having genital ulcers. You could be referring to herpes, and indeed HIV and HSV often are transmitted together.
Avatar n tn I wonder, too, whether age has anything to do with it - whether those who became sexually active before all the HIV/AIDS hype feel differently. Of course, people's perspectives change as they gain life experience anyway, so it might be hard to tell. Oh - and re: cancer patients doing research, betcha folks finally diagnosed with HIV don't do this kind of exhaustive research either. Of course, they probably weren't in this anxious population to begin with...
Avatar n tn sorry about all the emotions that are flooding your head and heart right now...this is a difficult place to find yourself in. my son was diagnosed a few months ago with HIV but his g/f tested negative out to three months. who knows exactly "when" he got it...he just got it. he was unfaithful to his g/f many times because of his meth addiction. and NO ppl, he did not shoot up. he also spent time in prison on drug charges and had several tattoos while there...
