Avatar f tn For the most part, the rates of HIV are substantially lower in rural than urban areas. However, HIV/AIDS certainly is not absent in less populated areas of the US, and in some geographic areas the rates may be nearly as high as in urban areas. The rate may be higher in certain rural areas of the southeast than in urban areas in many urban areas.
Avatar n tn HIV, AIDS and STD's are worldwide. They just don't reside in North America. Perhaps this escort slept with another person who lived in the US and did it without a condom. Like Judy said, vitamins don't stop you from contracting diseases. Just protect yourself.
661382 tn?1224950637 The doctors on this forum are saying that African sex workers(20% with HIV) are probably having higher viral loads because of not having access to medication ,so the same rule about oral sex does not apply to everybody, for instance to North America or Europe where there is a medical treatment available.
Avatar m tn were do you get these questions from, there are different strains of hiv and 2 types of hiv (hiv+1 and hiv+2) hiv+1 is the more common type which is normally found in people from europe and america whereas hiv+2 usually effects the african community!
Avatar n tn A stinging or burning tongue has nothing to do with HIV. In fact you did not even have a real risk of HIV infection. And you know that because going back to your post on November 3r to Dr. H on this very topic he told you that. In case you forgot here is what he said to you: "Relax. There is almost no chance you caught HIV. Most people who aren't as nervous as you would think "low risk" and "almost no risk" mean the same thing.
Avatar m tn What I have found in previous posts was the doctors saying that hiv was rare in heterosexual women, rare in sex workers in America, or she probably don't have HIV or something like that. What im wondering is this, in that website that ww2008 sent me it says there are around 1,000,000 to 1,200,000 people living with hiv/aids in the US. I know thats a high number but wouldn't that number seem low since there are around like 300 million people in the US or something like that.
Avatar n tn Thrush is an unlikely cause of penile rash, although it is possible. It also requires professional diagnosis, but in any case penile fungal infections do not suggest HIV. Some aspects of your wording suggest you may be in the UK. ("Thrush" is an uncommon word for yeast infections in North America.) If so, you can get high quality evaluation and advice at a NHS genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic.
451075 tn?1210258648 I agree with the opening statement. Regardless of how drunk you were, it is very unlikely you were assaulted in your sleep and don't remember it. Further, your symptoms don't suggest HIV. But if you remain concerned, it's fine with me if you decide to get tested. As far as getting your nerve up for it, that's in your control, not mine. You can expect negative results; and intellectually you know that it is dumb to not be tested because of fear of the result.
Avatar n tn All we can do is quote the odds; an online forum has no other way to address someone's fears and anxieties. By the way, It's 1 in 20,000, not 10,000 -- and some experts believe nobody ever catches HIV by receiving a **. And the odds are your partner didn't have HIV, so your actual risk probably is closer to 1 in a million. Could you be "the one"? Sure. You also could get hit by lightning.
Avatar n tn The research findings are preliminary, but if they are confirmed, this might partly explain the especially high rates of HIV/AIDS in southern Africa and in African American populations in North America, including the trends in east coast inner cities. I hope this helps.
Avatar m tn there is considerable debate around the hiv subtypes for example in North America vs asia (or whatever). Does research indicate that the asian sub type is easier to contract than another strain or is this all just talk with no statistical basis?
Avatar n tn Just another thing, AMERICA is whole continent from Canada and Alaska in the north to Argentina and Chile in the south, so the country is USA, not America, in America there are more than 600 million people and more than 2.5 million people living with HIV.
Avatar f tn i am surprised as to why it isnt compulsory in America, if a woman is hiv positive, she may pass it on to the child and cause hell for that child, if tested early during pregnancy, treatment can reduce the chances of her passing it to the child.
Avatar f tn ] clear from numerous presentations that opportunistic infections (OIs) continue to occur both in North America and abroad. These HIV-related complications are occurring because many patients are not receiving HAART due to lack of knowledge that they are infected with HIV, lack of access to care, or failure to respond to available antiretroviral agents." "They noted that the incidence of appendicitis in HIV-infected patients was 4 times higher than that in age-matched controls.
Avatar f tn Assuming you live in North America, your risk is less than 1 in a million. To put that in perspective, the chance that you will get hit by lightning in your lifetime is 50x higher. ARS symptoms when they happen always appear together.
Avatar m tn org/posts/show/1704700 In most of North America, under 1% of commercial sex workers are infected with HIV. And when a female has HIV, the average transmission risk for a single episode of unprotected vaginal sex is once for every 2,000 exposures. That puts your risk from unprotected sex at somewhere around 1 chance in 200,000 to 2 million -- i.e. the odds are very strongly in your favor.
Avatar n tn While the Caribbean has a higher HIV prevalence than North America, the vast majority are not infected. Overall, the odds are much in her favor. She should test for HIV as nursegirl advised as well as test for the more common STDs.
Avatar n tn The risk of transmission from male to female is higher than 1 in 2,000, probably closer to 1 in 1,000 in North America and Europe. It likely is quite a bit higher than that in southern Africa, where more HIV infected people are likely to have higher viral loads, to have other STDs, and to be uncircumcised. In addition, Dr. Hook's and my recommendations on timing of HIV testing depend in part on the level of risk; in a high risk situation like this one, testing out to 3 months makes sense.
Avatar m tn First, HIV is quite rare among heterosexual women living in western Europe and North America with fewer than 1 in 1000 having the infection. Further, HIV has never been spread through mutual masturbation even though it is typical for partners to get each others' genital secretions on one another.
Avatar n tn When considered in the context of your exposure (you did not mention that your partner had HIV or was high risk) and that fact that most women in North America do not have HIV, for you to be re-tested would be a waste of time and money. You are more likely to be hit by lightning.
408795 tn?1324935675 Not a problem, what I'm thinking is that maybe the medical field is working more on a HepC vaccine than a cure for the infected. There haven't been any other PI's that have made it to Phase III. This is what your post says: The company's lead product candidate, dutogliptin (PHX1149), is a dipeptidyl-peptidase-4, or DPP-4, inhibitor in Phase 3 development as an oral, once-daily treatment for Type 2 diabetes.
Avatar n tn Here in North America, fewer than 1 in 10,000 women have HIV. further, even in the unlikely situation that she had HIV, the risk for infection from any single exposure is less than 1 infection per 1000 exposures. Your risk for HIV is tiny. If your ex has had other partner and not been checked recently, you are at higher risk for other STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea or NGU than HIV.
Avatar m tn Such strains do not yet exist in North America or Europe, except in people who were infected in their home countries and then emigrated. 2) No other STD is a possible explanation for your symptoms. They are entirely unrelated to the sexual exposure you had a year ago. 3) In one of your other threads, you described yourself as "so depressed" that at time you though you would "kill myself".
Avatar m tn If you live in America the Health Department in each state does conduct free testing. If you live in America you need to google the health department in your state and you can find info on testing. What makes you think you have HIV or a STD.
