Common Questions and Answers about Hernia surgery methods

hernia-surgery

Avatar m tn In August I had a second traditional open surgery for the same hernia...During the winter it also failed..I am wondering whether to try surgery again with all the misery and difficulty or try to live with it with a truss..The surgeon insists that this has not happened in 500 such operations and that additional surgery will require considerably more work and methods due to all the mesh involved. I am very active and need input...Please offer suggestions....
Avatar m tn Basically I need to reduce this valve between the stomach and the oesophagus from my last endoscopy made the 27/06/2009 it was 1,5cm of diameter I don't know now, for me it doesn't matter how, yes I know already all this kind of methods you wrote down thank you so much again
Avatar m tn Are other surgery methods available? Thanks to all who respond or lead me in the right direction to some expert advice.
Avatar n tn I have (related to transflap surgery 2 years ago) a hernia, only recently diagnosed. I have had a large amount of fluid there for months and it is difficult breathing when I bend over or by the end of the day when the fluid accumulates, both hands spread over the area where fluid is accumulated will not cover the size of the area. It is very uncomftable and limits my activities of daily living and working. I am tired all the time. I have been telling doctors about it for several months...
Avatar f tn Unless the hiatal hernia is very problematic, the treatment for it is usually conservative - a change in lifestye, change in diet and meds to control acid reflux. If surgery is considered, it is typically done so after all other methods of control are exhaused because the surgery is not a simple one and it carries with it a fair number of side-effects. It's not a simple 'cut-and-stitch.
Avatar f tn I would be very skeptical about their ability to help a hiatal hernia. Chiroprators manipulate joints. A hiatal hernia is soft tissue and I wouldn't want one messing around there. Some other option you may want to try - probiotics, digestive, enzymes, and carrot juice. My compounding pharmacist also recommends taking acid to aid digestion. The reasoning makes sense to me, but it is rather expensive. Let me know if you would like more information on that.
Avatar m tn Just my advise is if any repairs are done please do not consider having a mesh placed to repair ur hernia. There way too much complications and a lot of ppl are suffering from them. If surgery is ur answer pls have it done the old school fashion by suturing it up. I really don't have any kind of answers for wat ur going through now but I do wish the best for u. Btw pain pills is easy to get dependent on them and that will not not help ur situation out me!! I stress!!
Avatar m tn Is this a result of surgery, the accident or both. I don’t understand how a car accident can cause a hernia.
Avatar n tn My husband had the surgery many years ago and he did just fine. You will have to take it easy for awhile though. Depending on how extensive the hernia is, I would'nt be too surprised if they do the surgery out patient. Of course you'll receive pains meds and the Dr will send you home with a script for pain meds.
Avatar f tn The procedure is a good choice for people whose hernias recur following traditional hernia surgery because laparoscopic methods allow surgeons to work around scar tissue from earlier repair. It's also good for people who have hernias on both sides of the body (bilateral inguinal hernias). Disadvantages of laparoscopic repair include an increased risk of complications and of recurrence following surgery.
Avatar n tn Anyway my question is has anyone had a surgery other than the nissen fundo to repair the hernia. I am interested in having mine fixed but do NOT want my stomach wrapped around my esophagus. I'd like for a surgeon to just go in and pull the stomach to its proper position and sew up the hole in the diaphram essentially returning everything to its natural order.
1580703 tn?1651904887 The doctor examined me and found a groin hernia and I'm scheduled for surgery in sept. I think I want laproscopic but am I going to end up with permanent pain? will the mesh or non-tension method fail to stop the hernia from progressing? I think it's from the gym or coughing from this tracheotomy I'm getting this crippling nausea sometimes and sometimes protonix helps. is it from the hernia or diabetes or GERD? thanks!
Avatar m tn Have been on Plavix for 13 months and find I need Hernia surgery now as I am having having many problems due to the Hernia. What is the possibility of having surgery? If I have surgery is the Plavix stopped for a number of days and then resumed?
1103592 tn?1274753561 Any every have a hernia while pregnant? I was complaining the baby's head was so low it was hurting - saw my dr today & it turns out it's a hernia! Grrr- at least baby sounds great (got to hear her hiccups on doplar!). Guess I'll goggle hernias until my surgery consult in 2 weeks.
Avatar n tn Hi Jenny, I have a hiatal hernia, but do not require surgery...I have known about my hernia since I was in my teens. I had a few flares that required meds...but, with proper diet and lifestyle I am able to keep it under control without meds. I just got my self off meds after being on them 2 yrs....I had flares from 3 diff surgeries....the meds they use to put u under alone can upset a balanced system.
2172260 tn?1337404686 i went through alot to get where i am. It was terrible. 5 months of tests & fired my whols team. i wrote this all out n some how lost it b4 it was posted 3 times. i went through stuff that i dont want anyone else to. more later, just plz be proactive. i was told i jad a small hiatal hernia & i should not b expediencing symptoms.
Avatar m tn I have already planned the surgery to fix the hernia for next week . 2 days ago I had an ultrasound which showed that I have gallbladder sludge and maybe some very small stones . I never had any pains in the stomach and the only thing that might be a symptoms is some digestive problems . The doctor advised that since I am going to surgery for the hernia I should proceed with the removal of the gallbladder .
341655 tn?1240368839 Yes. The surgery for a hiatal hernia is the Nissen Fundaplication, where a portion of the fundus is wrapped around the esophagus in the area of the lower esophageal sphincter. As for the type, 90% of all hiatal hernias are sliding hernias, not paraesophageal, so it's probably a sliding hiatal hernia that you have.
Avatar f tn I need gallbladder surgery in the near future. I have abdominal meshing and want to know if they can do laproscopic surgery on me or not. ANYONE have my issue?
Avatar f tn I am sorry to hear you have a hernia but at least you finally have answers to the pain you've been experiencing. I have not had a hernia (or don't think that is the cause of my occasional twinges of pain/discomfort) so cannot answer any questions about surgery. Hope all goes well!
Avatar n tn Does this mean surgery failed? is hernia back (now they are referring to this as a paraesophageal hernia) The doctors never told us herina might be back so I am wondering when I see x-ray report and it shos Pre-demonstartion of hernia, does that mean there is a new issue or they are seeing repaired hernia? is it typical that Nissen wrap would slip so soon after surgery?
Avatar m tn Dear Doctor,  thank you so much for entering in my post  I am a guy of 28 years, I've been suffering for 7 years from acid reflux with sliding hiatal hernia of 1,5 cm of diameter, diagnosed by endoscopy made on date 27/06/2009 caused by a bad use of my diaphragm studing opera my symptoms are:  1)pain in the central part of my stomach with presence of a sort of little ball which is visible even to naked eye  2)feeling of foreign body in the throat  3)feeling of burning to my oesophagus  4)
Avatar m tn I've been to multiple ERs for this gerd thing I get pressure in my throat no pain and discomfort in abdominal I was diagnosed with a small hiatual hernia back I'm 2011 with relux in esophagus this year the symptoms have gotten severe etc.
Avatar m tn ve had a hydrocele surgery at the age of six, left side inguinal hernia surgery at the age of 10, and a right side inguinal hernia surgery at the age of 24. My right testicle have been attached closer to my body since my hydrocele surgery and I can clearly remember how uncomfortable it felt to have such an abnormal position of your testicle. After 20 years, I still feel some discomforting pains (on my right testicle) when exercising.
Avatar m tn Bottom line I went into get gallbladder removed now I need OPEN Hernia surgery to repair inguinal hernia. (My internist agrees the gas probably pushed the hernia out. Painful bulge, burns sometimes, but seems to go back in when I sleep and pops out next day.) Can gas cause this and if my surgeon read prior scans (he didnt) what could have been done differently. I am sure I am not the first patient to have suffered from gas-induced hernia.
