Avatar f tn Although the surgery was for hernia and GERD they were hoping between the anesthetic and lessening of the irritation from the acid it may give a rest to the diaphragm and calm the hiccups .Also hiccups can be a side effect of surgery and he seems to do the opposite that they expect they were hoping it would stop them. I will check out the mayo link you sent thank you.

Avatar f tn Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum. So sorry u r feeling so poorly...in fact, I felt euphoric almost perfect after surgery.....it was the drugs....I did not have massive HA's...but was still getting some.....energy was low...especially at 3 weeks....goodness, it can take up to 2 yrs to heal from this. What meds r u taking, mayb the nausea is from them? hmmmm hiccups.....do u have reflux?...or a hiatal hernia? Some of us do feel like this afterward and may have another issue going on.....
Avatar f tn could be a couple of things, hiccoughs (hiccups) are caused by irritation of a nerve called the phrenic nerve which causes a spasm of your diaphragm (the muscle that separates your chest and abd and that expands your chest to breathe. this can be irritated by the surgery, by inflammation, by a bile leak (though you likely would have much more pain and it's been a while since surgery. hiatal hernia and reflux do sound like the most likely culprits for your symptoms.
Avatar m tn Irritation of the left diaphragm due to acidity causing stomach distension or due to the hernia can cause hiccups. Fatty food, alcohol etc too can cause hiccups. In GERD, hiccup is body’s mechanism to prevent choking. Apart from these kidney problems and other metabolic disorders, cancers, infections, certain mental health problems and brain stroke or injury can cause persistent hiccups.
Avatar n tn There may be some pressure on the phrenic nerve causing the hiccups. Were you tested for hiatal hernia? Are you overweight? THere can be several causes. Did the doctor recommend anything at all?
Avatar f tn She has been gluten free ever since and has had significant positive effects on her health. However we had hoped her hiccups would go away, but they haven't. In the past two years they have gone from maybe once a week to every day, sometimes multiple times a day. Usually it's one to 10 hiccups but sometimes can be more. They have also increased in intensity (louder and more weird, like a screech). Could these be cause by celiac disease?
Avatar n tn I had pretty bad reflux but more worrisome is the Irregular heartbeats. Cardio DR says there benign so now I'm wondering if the whole acid reflux/hiatal hernia is putting pressure on my heart or vagus nerve thus causing the palpitations. Is it worth going to a gastro Dr for further testing about this theory?
620923 tn?1452915648 I was wondering if anyone else with hashimoto's and gerd also get hiccups...that just come and go....nothing major, just annoying???

Take an antacid gel and a muscle relaxer and see if it helps.

1451338 tn?1413475023 Hi...Hiccups can also be the result of a hiatal hernia..which some of those with Ehlers-Danlos may have ....and some with GERD/acid reflux....so do look into ur digestive health as well...it is related to chiari. Avoid drinking soda's...using a straw..see if ne of that helps.... I agree with Stacey u do need to address this with ur dr.

Avatar f tn For almost 10 years since the age of 16 I have been experiencing heartburn type symptoms. I've had numerous doctors tell me it could be heartburn, hiatal hernia, and/or a peptic ulcer. I have an appointment for an endoscopy coming up to figure out the exact cause. I've been prescribed omeprazole 20mg which does not even seem to make any kind of dent in relieving symptoms as well as over the counter medications.
Avatar f tn ve been having some really strange pains recently that I wonder if may really be due to a hiatal hernia. I have abdominal tenderness, burping, hiccups, some chest discomfort, and some slight nausea. I've had some really weird experiences after eating or drinking recently. One time, I had pain in the upper part of my back and the back of my neck. Another time, I drank water quickly, and my back and shoulders started aching pretty bad.

Avatar n tn Oh my, does he have a hiatal hernia? If he has a sliding one the drugs and meds used for surgery may be affecting him....see about this and if it is a sliding hernia they may be able to manually manipulate it .....also some probiotics may be helpful, talk to his drs. I hope u get answers on the hiccups.
Avatar f tn The anaesthetic can cause some people to get hiccups too. Usually after surgery the hiccups tend to vanish after about 6 weeks so your dad should see them go soon. There is something else to consider. During heart bypass surgery a nerve on the left of right is sometimes traumatised which operates the diaphram. It can take a few weeks for this nerve to return to normal. It could be that the diaphram is having spasms.
906115 tn?1344200509 Yes, mine had hiccups ALL the time. When he was born he still got hiccups several times a day, it was so cute, when he hiccuped as a baby it sounded like someone was squeezing one of those squeaky toys. Hiccups aren't bad, it's just another way to feel the baby move. My little boy is now 21 months and I think sometime around 9 months or so he grew out of the hiccups all the time.
Avatar f tn Hi, in December of 2010 I had an Upper GI Endoscopy. The Dr told me I have hiatal hernia, gastritis, and GERD. I was put on Carafate and Omeprazole 20mg. I did this for about a 6 months but stopped because my symptoms went away. My symptoms are now back and worse than before. After eating I get SEVERE pressure/pain in the upper right part of my abdomen. I believe this same spot is where my hiatal hernia is located. When I press on it (even lightly) I notice there is a lump there.
Avatar n tn Yes, I quite frequently get pan in my upper back in between the shoulder blades and up the back of my neck along with severe burning in my throat and I have a small hiatal hernia. In my opinion, a hernia can cause a lot of odd symptoms. There are even times where I feel like I can not breathe efficiently due to the amount of pressure it creates in my upper abdomen and chest.
Avatar f tn My son is 9. He had an umbilical hernia as a baby and I assumed that was why he would puke when he laughed. But again I say he is 9 and he still pukes. He doesn’t even have to laugh hard, just laugh. First hiccups and there is a 10 second call down moment before he throws up. I can’t find anything on this. Help!
