Common Questions and Answers about Hernia surgery and recovery time

hernia-surgery

Avatar f tn This was my second surgery (first... removal of ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids). My recent surgery was also to repair a small hernia and removing bowel adheshions (scar tissue). Both are believed to be a result of my first surgery - possibly returning to work and daily activity too soon. I have 2 questions? First, what is a recommend timeframe to resume daily activities (I.e.driving,etc.). My tentative return tobwork dare isn't until July. And...
Avatar m tn My question is what will the recovery be like. I looked up the recovery for a gallbladder surgery and recovery for hiatal hernia repair and I think I am in for a lot of pain and weight loss. the weight loss I can take. But the pain I am not looking forward to. I will be home during the day by myself. Would I be able to take care of myself and what will the recovery be like. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
Avatar n tn Hi aliparkone, If she has undergone a laparoscopic surgery, the recovery time is faster. She can go home in 2-3 days. She might have pain at the surgery site for which pain killers can be taken.Generally a semi-solid diet is presribed from the 2nd or 3rd day during the first week. If the semi-solid diet is tolerated well, then other foods can be slowly introduced. This usually takes 2-3 weeks.Complete recovery takes 2-3 weeks.
Avatar n tn This can be repaired through surgery. Recovery time varies depending on the size of the hernia, the technique used, age and presence of underlying medical condition. However, a hernia can recur up to several years after repair. I hope this helps. 329994 tn?1301663248 I tried to eat solid food and that has not set well on my stomach, very nauseous, so I am gone back to drinking Boost, eating soup, soft foods and that sets better on my stomach, but does not produce a bowel movement. Is this normal after surgery and will it just take more time. I also have a hiatel hernia and take Prilosec 20mg/day. Thank you for any help.

433485 tn?1321813390 I have not had the operation, and I looked to see if we had a forum for folks with hernias, but, it looks like we don't. I would do a google search on umbilical hernias and surgery, you should hopefully be able to find something that will be helpful. Sorry that I can not help you more.
478868 tn?1209031705 A week after the surgery I had difficulty walking and standing straight up and I was getting sicker and sicker..so the Dr did a ct-scan which showed that I had ruptured my intestines from severe vomitting and through the staples I had a protruding area...I also had many other complications but they had to do an emergency surgery to repair it...
2042217 tn?1336527852 Once back home avoid lifting or strenuous exercise for at least the first two weeks, light exercise like walking can be done. The recovery time varies person to person and depends on your general health condition and extent of hernia. Usually one can be back to the normal routine after 2 weeks of surgery. But it is better to avoid strenuous jobs for at least 4-6 weeks after surgery as it can lead to tearing of the incision. Hope it helps. Good luck for your surgery!
454221 tn?1259445739 The risk of blood clots exits, but with an experienced surgeon, use of intermittent calf compression boots at surgery, relatively short operative time, and early ambulation, I have not seen this complication in over twenty years. Occasional seromas and minor wound healing issues are more common. Recovery time is usually about two weeks.
Avatar f tn Hi, 6 years ago i had my 2nd child and developed an umbilical hernia, which i had surgery for the repair. I now have had a 3rd baby - 5 months now- and have the umbilical hernia has returned.
Avatar f tn s better to ask for more time and be back before than to ask for some time and then have to call and ask for more. Good luck.
1570782 tn?1296689507 Hello and welcome! I havent had the surgery but have had the discussion with my NS about the expectation afterwards. I am awaiting a surgery date now. He said that it can take a long time and it is common to have up's and down's with recovery. So try to take it easy and give your body time to heal. It could take a long time as Selma said since we all heal differently.
Avatar n tn 2. What can I do to prepare before and after the surgery to help witht the recovery process. 3. May I still be excercising such as 1 hr. walks and situps/crunches before the surgery? and 4. Are there any special bands or wraps such as a girdle to help keep my organs in and my body in shape?
Avatar n tn The surgeon that did the repair recently did ultra sound and CT and said the hernia was slight again and the gall bladder distended and a kidney cyst, Other docs have seen the cyst as well. Several docs have told me that none of these things really need attention or are causing my symptoms. I m convinced something is wrong and worried it will turn into an emergency if I don't do something.

Avatar f tn My doctor suspects I have a hernia, a complication from having a large cyst, ovary and tube removed in May. I will need surgery to repair. Anyone else experience this? I'd appreciate your experiences and thoughts on recovery time, when I can return to work (I'm a preschool teacher), length of surgery, etc. Thanks!
Avatar f tn you may give us the answers and we will try to help you. 2.5 weeks is considerable time for recovery for a small bowel surgery. However, a major surgery may require more time. Do also let me know if you think that there may be some psychological problems that you may be facing.
Avatar f tn I was diagnoised in 1997 w/ breast cancer, bilateral masectomy/saline implants. I've had to have several implant replaced over the years along w/ surgeon dissatisfaction, so I was ref. to new surgeon & suggested tram surgery.
Avatar f tn I had the surgery August 2013. Decompression, laminectomy, and duraplasty. My recovery time was 6 weeks or so. I had a very positive outcome in that all my Chiari symptoms were gone after the surgery. My herniation was 17mm and I had csf blocking. I am interested in encouraging anyone facing the surgery and am willing to answer questions, etc., about my experience. I'm a 48 year old female.
Avatar m tn I am scheduled to get an open surgery for an umbilical hernia on the 25th. The surgeon specializes weight loss lap band surgeries. I found a highly regarded hernia specialist that I could use but may be a longer wait. Is it worth it?
Avatar f tn I have two inguinal hernias and I wanted to know if the recovery time is quicker than a traditional laparoscopic? Thanks!
