Common Questions and Answers about Hernia surgery and constipation

Avatar m tn s better to take a laxative then to be constipated. Because constipation and hard stool causes you to bear down more and push on those muscles that push out that hernia. And of course not going at all can be dangerous. But if I were you when you do use a laxative when you go to the restroom I suggest you hold in your hernia, if it causes pain. I have an abdominal hernia and my doctor prescribes Miralax for me. Maybe this will help you also. You can always try stool softeners too.
Avatar n tn I had my gallbladder removed ten days ago. Also had hernia repair at the same time. I was on an all liquid diet for the first 5 days. I have been on "regular food" for about 5 days now. I am very constipated. Having very small or no bowel movement. Strangely enough I have not had any pain or bloating. Could this be because I have not been eatting very much or is it a sign that something is wrong?
Avatar m tn Treatment involves reducing weight, avoiding constipation, avoiding strenuous work and lifting weight. Hernia is repaired by surgery. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn If you do not strain much as in lifting any weight, push ups, sports and avoid constipation and chronic cough then you should be fine. The hernia will not progress much and fast. The decision of surgery can be taken only by you in consultation with your doctor ans it is not possible to advice without examining on the net. Hope this helps. Do let me know if there is any thing else and keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn I had hiatal hernia, asthma, and reflux. Had reflux surgery and fixed hernia, still trouble breathing. Lot of people on here w/same problem. Im going to Cleveland Clinic in 2 weeks. Ive had this for 14 months. I beg docs for help, pulmonary docs say lungs clear and blow me off.
Avatar f tn Thank you for the information about possible surgery, yes I also have a hiatus hernia buy surgery wasn't mentioned at all, just repeat upper endoscopy every year. They did find Barretts but biopsy didn't show malignancy (knock on wood) but have to take PPI's for rest of my life. I have several other risks for surgery, one of the worst is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, not sure if this eliminates me from ANY surgery in the future, except (knocking wood) an emergency.
Avatar f tn My mother died due to a bowel nick during hernia surgery. It's a rapid decline and symptoms are grim. Severe pain that puts you in the fetal position. Usually, if caught, sepsis (the issue of a nicked bowel) is treatable and responds well to treatment. My mom was alone and didn't seek help in a timely manner. Onset is quick--- surgery on Wednesday, ill by Friday, in ER by Saturday, diagnosed with sepsis and operated on, dead Monday.
Avatar n tn I too have a severely redundant descending colon with internal posterior hernia and with severe constipation over years and years and most recently malabsorption and extreme distention upon even eating a cracker. Just at the stage of talking surgery now. However, I did want to ease your mind to a couple of specifics: First: Most abdominal surgery will cause constipation, even if the idea is to correct it. But, If you are as constipated as I am, then any chance of improvement is worth a try.
Avatar f tn He thinks that my abdomen pain is either a muscle spaz, torn abdomen wall, possible hernia, possible air trapped after surgery- he’s testing my liver and pancreas as I have a history there but he is entirely clueless and I explained to him my pain but he kept saying it couldn’t be internal or to do with the surgeries.
Avatar m tn The fluid restriction treatment for congestive heart failure can create other issues such as constipation that could lead to a hiatal hernia. This discussion is related to Effect of Hiatal hernia on enlarged heart..
Avatar f tn for sure its not hernia...hiatal hernia produce heart burn and pain in stomache not right lower abdomen....other types of hernia are visible at examination..they dont need ct scan for diagnosis. in your case it can be something blocking the ileocecal valve as its a narrow passage connectng small gut with large one. it can be gall stone, worm, hard piece of feces called fecolith or a growth.

Avatar n tn Hernias in adults rarely close. Or you can get surgery, it is an outpatient surgery and common. But surgery is surgery and can have deletrious side affects. If your doctor is giving you an "oh well" attitude it is becuase either option will work but both have their draw backs. Good luck with your decision. I personally am going to the surgeons to have a consult.
Avatar f tn I am severely dry from my head to my toes, literally. Drs. have told me that I probably have sjogren's syndrome, One of my biggest problems is chronic constipation. I drink plenty of water. I have had the chronic constipation since I was a child. I eat a lot of fiber. I also was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia last fall and my acid reflux can get so bad that I can't eat anything without feeling like I could breath fire. I lost weight last time it go so bad.
Avatar f tn I am status-post three c/sections, abdominal hysterectomy (still have my ovaries), and a ventral wall hernia repair while they were doing the hysterectomy due to compromised fascia that would not hold my organs in. In addition, I had liposuction following the hysterectomy, due to displacement of the fat (left with a large contour abnormality on my left side). Now I am diagnosed with the rectocele/intussusception.
Avatar n tn I am getting more nauseaus and feeling like I want to get sick I have a few times but don't know if it's serious enough to go to the ER i believe i have a hernia and it pops out and i have to push it back down for now it helps but is thus serious enough to go to the ER ?
Avatar m tn On 4/16/11 had inguinal hernia surgery after about a month felt incomplete evacuation . Went to gastro had mamomatry test and defagram they said might be pelvic floor dysplasia . Went through biofeed back and miralax daily. Things got worse have to strain for bm and no relief in gut when I do constant bloating can't sit so painful did enemas and couldn't pass it all out made matters worse.
Avatar f tn ( I have also been on 6 months of Zoladex and livial) The pain has changed (a lot worse), I have had blood in my bowel movements, constipation and vomiting. I have seen a gastroenterologyst who has done a GI, a colonoscopy and a CT scan. He found I've got a hiatus hernia, I've had a duodinal ulcer and I have a cyst in my liver on top of the Endo ( I thought I was quite healthly until a year ago. LOL). Apparently none of these should cause the pain and probs I've got.
Avatar f tn I had hernia surgery 7 1/2 wks ago cannot believe the pain i have had. It was a spagelian hernia and I am a female. After surgery my incision & other private parts swelled up the size of a cantelope and turned black & blue , so pain full couldn't walk. bruising and swollen from upper thighs to belly button and around both sides. Said it's a hematoma. Used mesh but that's all I really know.

Avatar m tn An incisional hernia can occur years after a surgery, including a laparoscopic procedure. I have a hernia which has developed at the site where I had a procedure some time ago. The weakness in the abdominal wall is created by the incision, even a perfectly healed one. Then the wall is strained through excercise, heavy lifting and even weight gain causing the weaker portion of the abdominal wall to tear (herniate).
Avatar m tn I have BPH (an enlarged prostrate) ,and I have recently discovered after a back injury that I have a herniated disc at L4,L5 and a small inguinal hernia on the left side.I suffer pain in my lower abdomin and testicals. The testicular pain is constant and a dull pain that can get worse if I exercise ,play tennis, golf etc.I don't know if the testicular pain is coming from my back herniated disc or from the hernia.
Avatar f tn after my boyfriend had hernia surgery the Dr used mesh to cover the hole there is pinching and pulling on the left side where the hernia was, his surgery was July 29th, he still sleeps on the couch This discussion is related to Hernia complications.
Avatar f tn I have several fun stomach issues, including GERD, a hiatal hernia, and now gastroparesis. I seem to always have heartburn, despite being on medication for almost 9 years. My esophagus is not "abnormal enough" to repair my hiatal hernia. There does not seem to be much available for my gastroparesis, since Reglan made me sick, Amitiza is not covered by my insurance, and I have no idea if Novardis will accept me to go on Zelnorm.
7444176 tn?1390859012 I am very afraid and sadden by his condition, perineal hernia. He had surgery a couple weeks before X-mas a year ago, thankful it has only been one. But the vet never told me before or after costly surgery that this would be life long. I excepted the challenge because the love I have for my animal. I have tried everything from peas and carrots in his food, fiber, laxatives, olive oil, psyllium seed, etc.
