Common Questions and Answers about Heart valves engineering

Avatar n tn I understand that there is research into tissue engineering that might eventually enable surgeons to build new valves from patient's own cells, but am finding it very hard to find out any information about this procedure. Is it likely that this will be available in the future? I would also really like to know if my fears about long term warfarin use are justified. I would be very grateful for any help you can give me on this subject, as it has become a subject of great concern for me.

Their main purpose is to maintain unimpeded forward flow through the heart and from the heart into the major blood vessels connected to the heart, the pulmonary artery and the aorta. As a result of a number of disease processes, both acquired and congenital, any one of the four heart valves may malfunction and result in either stenosis (impeded forward flow) and/or backward flow (regurgitation).
Avatar m tn EF being as low as 10 means that his heart is not pumping enough. Which two valves are leaking? Sorry, but it does not look good. Heart valve surgery is a huge surgery and he would most likely not survive it. If his heart is not pumping out enough blood to his body, he will go into cardiac shock and all of his organs will shutdown and he will retain water and could put 30 pounds in a day or two.
Avatar m tn t help any of the current heart condtions. Sometimes, as one ages there is some calicification of the heart valves that cause some leakage, and really not considered medically significant unless the leakage is moderate to severe, then there may be some shortness of breath, chest pains, etc. Thanks for sharing and if you have any further questions you are welcome to respond. Take care.
Avatar n tn Posted By TPowell on January 13, 1999 at 13:48:41: My husband (age 25) came home from work complaining of chest pain. I finally convinced him to go to the doctor. Our doctor ran an EKG and stated that two of his valves in his heart were "swollen or enlarged". He didn't seem too concerned about this and also said that the chest pains he was having was due to a inflammed muscle.
Avatar n tn If you would like to make an appointment at the Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, please call 1-800-CCF-CARE or inquire online by using the Heart Center website at www.ccf.org/heartcenter. The Heart Center website contains a directory of the cardiology staff that can be used to select the physician best suited to address your cardiac problem.

Avatar n tn There seems to be a variety of opinions in the literature about the significance of mild regurgitation of heart valves. A recent echo shows that I have mild regurgitation of tricuspid and mitral valves (not noted on previous echos). LV function good. I am also pacemaker-dependent following successful AV node ablation for sick sinus syndrome and have had a left pneumonectomy. Recent symptoms of increased breathlessness on exercise and some central chest discomfort.
Avatar n tn What is the expected longevity of the different types of prosthetic heart valves? What are the factors to be considered when choosing a valve? How much patient input is appropriate in making the determination as to which valve to use?
Avatar f tn Dear dsweat, You are right about the fact that there are four heart valves inside your heart. The statement that there are only 3 heart valves inside your heart is actually erroneous. It is possible that he was referring to the number of cusps on your aortic valve. Everyone is born with three cusps but occasionally there may be fusion of two of the cusps leading to only 2 cusps. This is a congenital anomaly and needs to be followed by a cardiologist with regular echocardiogram.
7465131 tn?1391023265 He has recently learned he has a heart murmur and further testing revealed he only has 2 heart valves. I have never heard of this before. Generally he feels fine, he works out and runs & does not have a problem with shortness of breath. This came as a real shock! What do you advise? Should he get a second opinion?

Avatar m tn There is nothing that I am aware of that could be administered on a monthly basis to treat hypertension. There also isn't a cure at this time. Sorry.
Avatar n tn The mitral, triscuspid and aortic are all valves. Regurgitation is a backflow of blood through the valves. A shunt is a hole in the walls between the chambers between the heart. As to whether you will need a valve replacement or not this is a question that you will have to be answered by your cardiologist. Hope this helps. Feel free to write back with any additional questions. Information provided here is for general educational purposes only.
17508117 tn?1457336716 The MRI and TEE showed that the valves are okay, however, there is a lesion between the heart and lungs that is giving me severe chest pains that are not related to exertion. The assumption of the doctor is that the leion could be from the cut that was created during surgery six years back in 2010. My question is, What is a heart leasion and what leading to the wound not to heal from six years back and what is the possible way as moving forward?
Avatar m tn He never had heart surgery. His heart surgeons told him that he had a very weak heart and the heart surgery would be risky. He worked mowing lawns with a walk mower up and down hills until a month before he died. He was active (extremely active) all of his life and I think that was part of what contributed to his longevity. When the heart valves get worse or bad, shortness of breath is a symptom. He will know by symptoms if there is more procedures that need to be done.
