Heart stroke vs heart attack

Common Questions and Answers about Heart stroke vs heart attack

Avatar n tn Ok, you're 21 yrs old and worried about the possibility of a stroke which would be unusual in someone your age. Do you have heart problems? A history of stroke or some other reason to suspect a stroke? Do some research on strokes. The two major types are hemorragic and embolic. Embolic strokes are the most common and occur in older folks, people who have heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, high cholestrol, obesity or certain autoimmune diseases are more at risk for these strokes.
Avatar n tn Difficult situation and guess what you are experiencing fear all the time thinking you are gonna have a stroke. Well, Fear not but eat better. Stay away from alot of fast food. I had a stroke and they could not find it. It came on by a medicine Depo-medrol injection for back pain. What I do now is take fish oil and plenty of it. It keeps the arteries soft. It is working. I take almost six tabs or more a day. Try that it is cheaper than a doctors bill.
Avatar n tn Why are women treated differently then men when presenting with symptoms of a heart attack? And Why are women more often then men brushed off or diagnosed as having an anxiety attack?
469720 tn?1388149949 As we look to give people simpler ways of self-assessing their heart attack and stroke risk, waist circumference is one simple way to do this. Read on to learn why abdominal fat is a bad thing. As it turns out, those love handles may be cute...but they may also be deadly According to several recent studies, both waist size and the waist to hip ratio may be better indicators of heart disease risk than the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI).
Avatar n tn The idea of anticoagulants is to lower the risk of stroke/heart attack. These are also very much risk factors with bypass surgery, indeed, with any surgery. If you are afraid of uncontrollable bleeding, simply request an INR test to see what your clotting factor is. They will then be able to advise you. The internet tends to produce problem cases over successful ones, which is why my Cardio warns me not to accept too much of it. It's like the media, no news is good news.
469720 tn?1388149949 Low vitamin D levels may increase the risk for Cardiovascular disease ie heart attack and stroke If you have low vitamin D levels, correcting the deficiency may reduce the risk for heart disease, new research suggests. The studies build on the researchers' previous work linking low levels of vitamin D to an increased risk for heart disease.
Avatar n tn I had an overdose of thyroid medication in August of 2007, I was suppose to be taking 12.
Avatar n tn Hi -- I wanted to let the list know that a PFO (a congenital hole in the heart) can sometimes be the cause of a cerebellar stroke -- it happened to me. I'm 47 and had an operation 3 yrs. ago -- after the surgery I had 3 days of intense vomiting. 2 wks. later I had a cerebellar stroke -- the symptoms were vomiting, vertigo, and complete loss of balance. The ambulance got me to the ER, and the ER drs. at my NYC hospital were great.
Avatar f tn The good news is, from the blood test, chest x-ray, and heart monitoring during the ER visit. The results came back normal, NO sign of heart attack, high blood pressure or stroke. One more thing to add, during my low carb diet, I was taking very high dose of Vitamin D. There's an article saying that taking too much vitamin D also cause heart palpitation. To counter the symptom you need to take enough Magnesium with it. See article here http://www.easy-immune-health.
Avatar n tn Plavix, similar to aspirin, is effective in treating arterial clots (stroke, heart attack, peripheral arterial disease), whereas coumadin is effective in treating venous clots (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism). Therefore, you would base your therapy on the type of clot you are being treated for.
Avatar f tn I need to know the difference between diastolic dysfunction and heart failure and how to best avoid heart failure if, in fact, I don't have mild heart failure already. Any help from you would be most appreciated. Thank you.
Avatar n tn Either way, one of the first things that should be excluded if the history is fitting is a TIA, or transient ischemic attack, due to reduced blood flow to a part of the brain, whatever be the cause (whether from a narrowed artery in the neck or head, reduced blood flow due to changes in blood pressure or abnormal heart rhythm, or a clot coming from the heart).
Avatar n tn Those who received stents did not show a reduction the risk of heart attack, hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome, or the composite of heart attack, stroke and death, but they did have a greater reduction in chest pain than those who received medical therapy alone".
Avatar n tn A stroke in the region that controls the autonomic output (such as the right insular cortex or hypothalamus) can lead to a high dose of the regulatory chemical being relased. This can lead to a heart attack and/or cardiac arrhytmias. The EKG changes seen after 'stroke' can be S-T elevation, sinus tachycardia, elevated T waves (or depressed) prolongation of the QT interval and U waves (I hope that was not too technical, but you can discuss these with your doctor).
Avatar m tn We are not sure, but it is possible that my dad had an aortic aneurysm from what I was told. Mom had stroke at age 71, then heart attack took her at age 73. Both parents had high blood pressure where mine is fine at 115/75 average. My weight is fine at 5'5" and 135 lbs. I do take after dad as far as dental health (periodontitis) though I'm getting that addressed this week after years of ignoring it. I am aware of increasing evidence with oral health and heart health.
915775 tn?1243253530 You push a button and it records your heart and you can send it directly to someone who can tell you whether or not the heart rate was anything to worry about. This could help them know if you are truly just having a panic attack, or if your heart rate is too fast, or abnormal. I have an anxiety disorder. I have for several years, but I never had a panic attack until one day when my heart started racing really fast and i fainted. I have had anxiety ever since.
1309220 tn?1273701460 The neurologist should be able to tell if you really had a stroke, or if it was simply a migraine that mimicked a stroke, as that can happen during a TIA attack. I would also recommend seeing a cardiologist. I also get TIA, and can lose my ability to talk, walk, etc. I was also losing consciousness randomly up to 10x a day because of the TIA. I finally went to see a cardiologist, at my neurologist's recommendation, and had a TEE performed.
Avatar n tn My father suffered a stroke 9-18-07, along with a heart-attack, pneumonia, and blood infection. He was in the critical care unit on a ventilator for 3 weeks, and in the step down unit for 1 week. Upon removing the vent he was able to talk with everyone and remembers everything except the day of the stroke. He is now in a local rehab unit, but is unable to move his left side.
Avatar n tn This does make the diagnosis of TIA less likely, although 30% patients who have stroke have unknown causes. Also, strokes can come from the heart with abnormal rhythms or valves. But if it is coming from the heart, the symptoms shouldn't manifest itself in the same way clinically every time(you mentioned two episodes of Rt sided face numbness) as clots usually don't travel the same route up to your head each time the heart beats abnormally.
1319105 tn?1274293200 Opana could contribute to a stroke from a bleed, but not from a stroke from a clot. An MRA can usually (but not always) differentiate a stroke from a bleed vs a stroke from a clot.
Avatar n tn (had stents put in 6 months earlier for low pressure readings) Cath doctor emphasized three times that I did not have a heart attack but a "heart event". He listed NSTEMI on the Cath report. He made the call for no coumadin to my Cardiologist. EF doctor frowned. I was to be released with Coumadin but since Plavix was still needed they said NO to the Coumadin. I need both. What is CC's thought on this when a patient needs Plavix and Coumadin? I am on NorpaceCR, TopolXL and Avapro.
Avatar m tn Husband went to the hospital when he felt symptoms of extreme exhaustion. It was determined he had heart attack due to blood test results. Ejection fraction is 60%. Echocardiogram was essentially normal upon release from hospital. Doctor who performed catherization and could not stent 100% blocked artery feels husband will do fine on medication alone. Husband went for a 2nd opinion and was told he should have the 100%, 70% and 60% blocked arteries stented.
Avatar f tn Antibodies to phospholipids (aPLs) can cause narrowing of blood vessels, leading to blood clots in the legs or lungs, stroke, heart attack, or miscarriage. The most commonly measured aPLs are lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin antibody, and anti-beta2 glycoprotein I. Nearly 30 percent of people with lupus will test positive for antiphospholipid antibodies. Phospholipids found in lupus are also found in syphilis, and the blood test cannot always tell the difference between the two diseases.
429949 tn?1224695179 He said I have had MS for a while to have this many lesions. I asked why I had never had any symptoms before this one attack if I had it for a long time. He said I had it but just did'nt know it. Second neuro says all lesions are the same age, Indicating that they happened all at the same time. He is leaning toward ADEM because of the lesions being of the same age, a negative spinal tap and no new lesions, or attacks for two years.

Avatar n tn with a migraine headache that scared me like I thought it was a stroke. Seem to be on recovery now with the fatigue but I have noticed that I have the occasional panic/anxiety attack now and then. Still have lots of weak muscles too. Slow recovery and am hoping MRI is all okay. Just wondering if anyone else had ever been told this or gone through something like this. Thank you for any posts.
907968 tn?1292625804 Actually, two recent studies done in Greece and China have confirmed that statin therapy has been shown to not have effects on the liver as once though, in fact those with abnormal liver function prior to statin treatment showed improvement in their liver function.
Avatar m tn I have ADD and wanted to try something more natural vs taking ADD medication, this turned out to be a very bad idea. I was taking a combination of drugs for 2 weeks with no heart related issues however when I added what is known as Piracetam is caused very bad prolonged heart palpitations for 8+ hours.
