Heart problems in king charles cavaliers

Common Questions and Answers about Heart problems in king charles cavaliers

Avatar n tn My father is looking to buy a puppy that is a beagle and king Charles cavalier mix. I'm aware that up to 50% of cavaliers have a disease called syringomyelia where their heads are too small for their brains. This is apparently a painful and debilitating disease. I also know that cavaliers are also prone to valve problems and heart murmers. My father wanted to buy a mutt to try and decrease the likelihood of buying an animal that would suffer from genetic diseases.
1388357 tn?1280189493 Yeah I know about the King Cavaliers....when I first started to look up chiari I found info on dogs and horses...not people....so I knew more about them , then myself...lol... It is sad in a funny way that a vet might be the better Dr for us to talk to.
Avatar n tn I have an eight month old, female, cavalier king charles spaniel who just experienced her first "doggy period". It ended about a week and a half ago, and since then I've noticed that she now has a terrible stench! I've bathed her numerous times, however the smell of dead animal keeps coming back. Is there something wrong with her or is this normal?
Avatar n tn Hi! I recently boarded my King Charles Spaniel and my Golden Retriever for 5 days. I picked them up and noticed that both of them were shaking their ears and sneezing or trying to clear their noses by snorting. They were fine when I dropped them off. Could this be some sort of kennel illness? The King Charles has no appetite, the Golden is eating normally. Thanks!

Avatar f tn Hi- we have a almost 6 month old King Charles Cavelier Spaniel that went in today to be neutered. The vet called me and told me her platelets were low at around 100,000. she said that was on the manual count and on the regular CBC it was lower 60,000-80,000. she would not do surgery on her and stated they had to be at least 200,000.
Avatar n tn I have just bought a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is 7 months old. When he first came to us he was very nervous about everything including noises and people. He seems to have settled down in the last 2 weeks but still seems to bark and growl at small children and is nervous of strangers. We have had a nephew of ours who is a toddler who is very loud and enthousiastic and could have scared the puppy in this initial stage.
1782268 tn?1314719680 I have a 10 year old Cavalier King Charles taht has had some health issues, but is ok right now. He has just started losiing a lot of hair on his back. What could be the cause of this hair loss?
620048 tn?1358018235 Hello, I am so fortunate to have found her. We had talked about getting a rescue a couple days after my little Molly died. A day or two after that I had a talk with God, which I do quite often, and told him II needed some help here and wanted Him to look out for me. I had always wanted a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel but I also wanted a rescue dog. I would not pay that kind of money on another dog..nor could I pay it.
Avatar m tn Lastly, please have your vet (or yourself) contact the breeder to try to find out if there are any congenital problems in the breed line even if these problems were generations back. This may take some detective work and finesse unless the breeder is unusually forthcoming. Please keep us informed!
Avatar f tn Some of the folks on that list, such as John Madden, suffer a very specific anxiety; in his case, flying. John goes everywhere in his big bus. And some are active in talking about their panic; Willard Scott is a good example. Oddly missing (and just plain odd) is Stephen King, whose subject matter is the realm of the terrifying, fancy that. He tells a funny story about his first meeting with his publisher -who was at that time reveiwing King's manuscript.
620048 tn?1358018235 We have a Cavalier King Charles Spanial that was a rescue dog...she is 17 lbs now and we only feed her one cup of dry dog food and and 2 -3 doggy snacks a day plus a few snacks of a plain rice cake. She hasn't been getting a lot of exercises either. I am not sure what else to do to really get her weight down. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Avatar n tn We have been told by more than one nephrologist doctors that because of his medical history--particularly his heart problems--that statistically Charles' odds of long-term survival on dialysis are poor. (About 50% in three years.) We know that dialysis patients seem to have a higher rate of progression of coronary artery disease. What we don't understand is, why? What causes dialysis patients to do so poorly heart-wise? And is there anything we can do to improve Charles' odds?
Avatar f tn I was recently diagnosed with syringomyelia after taking myself off proton pump inhibitors, which I had been using for 13 years (proton pump inhibitors include prilosec and aciphex). When I googled "prilosec and syringomyelia" I found out that the cavaliar king charles spaniel is treated for sm with proton pump inhibitors. So I went back on proton pump inhibitors and the excruciating pain went away. The story is a bit more complicated than that but that is the gist of it.
Avatar m tn I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that was born with extra fluid beneath the skin around her abdomen. The fluid (clear, pale yellow like plasma) has created a loose skin pocket. The accumulation is slowing down (today is day 3) and I hope it will correct itself and the puppy will grow into it's loose skin. She is growing, nursing, and eliminating waste like the rest of her litter mates and her energy level is the same. Her heart sounds the same as well. Any ideas?
734574 tn?1231940103 I have a 2 1/2 year old male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He has been housebroken since he was about a year old. Four months ago we got another Cavalier who is practically housebroken and has an accident a couple times a month now, but tells us when he needs to go out. Recently, our older dog has begun peeing and pooping in the house. The first time he peed he did it in one spot like he does outside, now he is walking and peeing. The only time he poops is when the younger one is around.

Avatar m tn Could this also be caused by Protopic use.my dog is a 4 yr 6 mth cavalier king charles spaniel and now coincidentally also suffers from malassezia since the use of Protopic since May this year. I appreciate any help.

1624744 tn?1299240923 Last Wednesday we took our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to be neutered. Everything went as planned. That night he was in more pain than what other dogs I've had was. He cried on and off all night. From then he has steadily gotten worse. Then Tues he stopped eating and crying out if you touched him anywhere. Wed was worse, he didn't want to walk at all and still not eating. I took him to the vet who said everything was fine, she thought he had ulcers and gave him meds for that.
Avatar f tn I got a stent put in. Probably a problem from the high blood calcium, treatment, and blood pressure all mixed together. Getting ablation, too.
