Common Questions and Answers about Heart problems in children

Avatar n tn Having said all of that, true heart related chest pain in children is EXTREMELY rare, even in children with known heart disease. The fact that she says her heart feels like it stops, tends to lead me to believe she is having premature beats and that she is feeling her heart beat against the chest wall; children tend to describe palpitations as chest pain, even though it is not true heart related chest pain.
Avatar f tn Well let's put it this way. I had a job in a large computer department as an operator and within a year I was manager. I was suddenly responsible for over 100 users in each of 6 European Countries. Suddenly I was jetting around, sorting out problems. The stress was agonizing. The money was fantastic and I did the job for about 20 years. I spent many hours sitting, but after work I did lots of exercise, and I mean a lot.
Avatar n tn I have copied this out for you, it happens quite frequently While there are uncommon serious causes of passing out in children, the majority of fainting episodes are brought about by reasons that are neither serious nor life-threatening. The most common reason for fainting in children is called vasovagal syncope [VAY-so-VAY-gull SEENK-oh-pee). Vasovagal syncope is an abnormal reaction of the nerves to otherwise normal circumstances. These nerves dictate the heart rate and blood pressure.
Avatar f tn Definitely have her checked out. If it comes and goes quickly, she may have to wear a monitor to "catch" it. Just having a quick 10 second EKG in the office may not tell them what's going on. There are arrhythmias that occur that harmless but can be annoying and interfere with her daily life. I've had PSVT all my life, even in childhood.
Avatar n tn I have IHSS also known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Eveyone in my family was asked to be tested with an echo cardiogram. My son has to be tested every couple years, I was told I had a famil type of HCM but know one in my family has tested positive yet.
1570160 tn?1295613620 It may surprise you to know that 1 in every 100 children born today is born with some type of heart disease. There can be many reasons for the bradycardia that Andrew suffered from. The most common thing is something called Sick Sinus Syndrome, however this would have been easily rectified with a pacemaker.
Avatar n tn I tend to listen to my docs since i am not a doc and did not have the benefit of going to school for 12 plus years with specialized training. If the heart doc says she is at risk then she is at risk. In my humble opinion in one hand you have an issue w. ADHD and in the other you have a situ where the doc is obviously very concerned for daughter and is trying to protect her thru the meds. Every situ is different depending on the medical hx.
Avatar f tn I am 47 year old woman. Lost a lot of weight a two years ago by exercising two hours a day and watching what I eat. Went from 211 to 150 and this last year stayed at 160. Well last year I noticed my heart rate was normally in the 50's and it was getting harder for me to bring it up through exercise. About 6 to 7 months age (a guese) I started slowing down. Thought it was due to having a lot of extra responsibilies on my plate.
Avatar f tn Is he really active in sports? Sometimes it can happen with aerobics training, but normally is indicative of heart disease.
Avatar n tn The incidence of retinal problems is higher in high myopes than simple myopia or normal eye. However the most likely statistic wise is no problems.
Avatar m tn Chest pain at your age which is caused by heart disease, is extremely rare even in children born with congenital forms of heart disease. You would be pretty sick at this point if the pain was heart related. Try and get help for your panic attacks, that will help you to calm yourself down and enjoy your teen years.
994817 tn?1249738278 My uncle who is 53 just had a heart attack recently, but other then that I don’t have a history of heart problems in my family. Do I sound like a candidate for heart attack or another heart problem? Can teenagers with my history even get heart attacks? And if they can, what type of history do teenage heart attack victims usually have in order to get one? Do my symptoms sound like typical anxiety symptoms?
Avatar f tn Wow! I have to say how nice it is to know you are not a freak and that other people have this horrible problem. I can go back as far as 7 years of age and remember having anxiety, It's so sad to think a child would have to deal with such a thing. I now take Lexapro and feel alot better. Not 100% but I guess as good as it's gonna get for me. I recently noticed alot of anxiety signs in my 9 year old daughter. It's apparently something you can pass on to your children.
1110718 tn?1258435594 I tried posting last night but I must have made an error... I'll try again: Maybe something to consider (actually two things) regarding your daughter: PANDAs and allergies. If your child has been exposed to STREP recently, there may be a chance that your child's own strep-antibodies are attacking the ganglia in the brain, which results in these actions (it also can result in OCD and really bad thoughts.) The antibodies somehow mistake the ganglia for the strep infection.
Avatar m tn Your child has obviously been deeing a pediatric cardiologist for several years; has he been evaluated by an EP Specialist to really have a good look at his heart's electrical system? What is going on with your son does not sound normal at all. You say he has bradycardia, how slow is his heart rate? (at awake periods and at sleep?) Being an athlete, it would be normal to have a slower heart rate; it's not normal for him to be hitting the floor. Does he need a pacemaker?
1980489 tn?1326255851 The symptoms are the same in adults as in children - but keep in mind that not every adult has every symptom and neither does every child. I had it - and we all present pretty differently even though we are the same? Muscle fatigue means that exercise is pretty much a disaster - and the fatigue is overwhelming.
6133477 tn?1415996104 finally got ahold of him Well I went to the er cause I was scared everything was fine my baby had a heart beat of 150 and cervix was closed. Avatar n tn How did the echo go? Generally speaking chest pain in children is very common and rarely ever caused by heart disease. Varying heart rates usually mean there is a Sinus Arrythmia going on which is normal because it is in response to breathing. While I have a respect for what some of the posters have written on here, I would have to disagree with some of the things said.
Avatar n tn What are her chances of becoming diabetic? Her doctor said hypoglycemia sometimes precedes diabetes in children. Is is possible to "grow out of" hypoglycemia? If so, what are the chances of this happening?
Avatar f tn She was referred to an Heart Specialist. Is that a major sign of some sort of heart disease? She is a cheerleader and will she have to stop cheering? Can it be life threaten or she can have a normal and healthy life?
Avatar n tn She also has some other heart problems and got her first pacemaker when she was 3-years-old. A couple of years ago she got a pacemaker / defibrillator. She had a son when she was 20 even though she had been told not to have children. She does get short of breath, but has manages to be a wife, mother and is currently the Director of Accounting for a construction company in Dallas. Best of luck to you and your baby.
