Heart operations valve replacement

Common Questions and Answers about Heart operations valve replacement

operation

Avatar n tn Extended long-term survival and symptomatic relief in a symptomatic elderly patient (even in a nonagenarian) with severe valvular heart disease are usually obtained using aortic valve replacement. The long-term survival rate with valve replacement--about 70% at 5 years--appears far superior to that attainable with drug therapy alone. The survival rate for elderly patients undergoing successful operations is similar to that for an age-matched population without valvular disease.
Avatar m tn A surgeon at Mayo Clinic who has done thousands of heart valve operations is on record that the biggest problem he sees is the partient waited too long. If the EF is reduced and an enlarged LV, replacement of the valve may not restore good functionality. You may want to get an opinion of a surgeon that you are comfortable.
Avatar m tn My sister had a aortic valve replacement surgery 4 years ago, she ended up with a pacemaker and had a long recovery. We found out that she now needs aortic valve replacement/ascending aneurysm repair surgery. does anyone know the risks involved?
Avatar n tn t too calcified, they basically feed a collapsed valve on the end of a catheter up to the heart. As the balloon is expanded, it squashes the old valve into the heart wall and the new valve expands into place. Recovery is very quick compared to open heart surgery.
Avatar n tn My 76 yr old father-in-law is scheduled to have dual valve replacement soon. He has existing COPD and a AAA (abdominal aortic aneurysm) He is on a variety of medications. My question is how much higher is mortality when there is comorbid disease present? Also, what is the likelyhood of complications? We are very concerned that if he proceeds with such an invasive surgery that his post surgical quality of life could be diminished. We are uncertain if our concerns are valid.
660872 tn?1238641245 He was referred to a cardiac surgeon for consideration for valve repair, ? replacement. He cancelled the appointment and went to see the cardiologist again instead. The cardiologist agreed with my fathers decision not to have surgery. He said that just because Dad refused surgery now, it didn't mean he couldn't have the surgery later. My questions are 1) is the mortality/failure rate any higher the longer you have the disease?
Avatar f tn I have been advised to undergo 2nd open heart surgery for mitral valve replacement (artificial valve) and tightening of the tricuspid valve opening. What are the pros and cons of this surgery? Artificial valve does not need replacement but I have to be on lifelong warfarin medication. What will happen if I choose not to do it? What are the side effects of LT warfarin?
Avatar f tn I posted this for those of you who do not know what mitral valve prolapse is SHALIM you answer is at the bottom Treatment Most people with mitral valve prolapse, particularly people without symptoms, don't require treatment. If you develop symptoms, your doctor might prescribe certain medications to treat MVP-related chest pain, heart rhythm abnormalities or other complications. Some medications you might be prescribed include: Beta blockers.
Avatar m tn Since the secondary left ventricular obstruction is caused by the extrusion of the improper size of aortic valve, would it help to do another mitral valve replacement with the smaller size? A doctor told me that there is 16mm mitral valve available in US. And if Konno operation is the only option for this baby, do you know which clinic is good at this operation? Thanks again!
Avatar m tn You mentioned a leaky valve and having surgery. I had mitral valve replacement and opted for the mechanical valve since this was my second surgery. If I had known what I know now I would have gotten the tissue valve again. Even though you have to eventually have the surgery again due to the life of the tissue valve, I would gladly have done it. The mechanical valve is so restrictive.
Avatar m tn My 8 years daughters mitral valve has not growth in proper since birth. Is required to got her mitral valve surgery.
Avatar m tn only you can make this decision..I went thru the same doubt that you are, but between taking the medication and having other surgery in 15 years I chose to take the medication..
Avatar m tn After considering couple of cardiac specialists, they both have suggested two complete different options for valve replacement. One of them suggested to go with open heart Mechanical valve replacement surgery as the doctor has been doing it for many years and the valve has 20-30 years lifetime.
Avatar m tn Hello, Looking for some good opinions, not guarantees. My dad is 78, has been in great health until the Spring, when he just wasn't feeling good. End up he went into the hospital in late September for a week with Congestive Heart Failure. They took 19 lbs worth of fluid out, did all the imaginable heart tests and bottom line his heart is working at 25%. They sent him home and his hospital cardiologist said he would need to have an aortic heart valve replacement.
Avatar f tn I am to get another valve replacement this summer for my mitral valve with another porcine valve. Choosing the type of valve I wanted was an intense decision. With your son, I would stay away from mechanical valves for now and save it for the next go 'round considering he plays a lot of sports and probably won't stop playing after having his surgery. In five years when I get my next valve replacement, I will be receiving two mechanical valves.
Avatar n tn Sir here one doctor say that i have moderate heart failure and i need both valve replacement in near future, another says I can wait for few years. Now a days I am feeling palpitaion daily.I am taking 25 mg metopropal, dytor plus 10. how much time I can wait for valve replacement? both valve can be replaced at once?wtah would be the cost?and wahts is the expexted life expectancy after valve replacement?
Avatar n tn An autograft valve replacement uses your own pulmonary valve — another heart valve — to replace your damaged aortic valve. Aortic valve surgery usually involves open-heart surgery performed with general anesthesia. Your heart is exposed and connected to a heart-lung machine that assumes your breathing and blood circulation during the procedure. Your surgeon then repairs or replaces your leaky aortic valve.
Avatar n tn Of these choices, neither valve grows with the patient, so it is important to ensure that the largest possible valve that can be tolerated by the heart is placed so as to minimize the number of follow-up operations. Sometimes what happens is placing a tissue valve during childbearing years, and then switching out to a mechanical valve. Unfortunately, without knowing your daughter’s anatomy or prior surgical indication, etc, I can’t say for sure what needs to happen here.
Avatar f tn The normal Valve-replacement surgery (open heart - full sternotomy and on cardio-pulmonary bypass) would leave the Surgeon with a heart that is not pumping and should take from 3-6 hours to complete. Your surgery was done over 12 hours! thus it must have been a very complicated case and very rear. I am very glad to hear that you have survived all of this and life after a new valve/repaired heart sure is much better!
Avatar f tn It is important to do the repair/replacement before permanent damage to your heart and lungs. Some people get away with not needing a repair/replacement and some patients go from grade 3 - 6 in a very short time.
Avatar n tn Your mother can have a normal life span with heart valve leaking. It depends on whether there is progression of regurgitation, valve integrity, underlying cause, etc. An operation would be appropriate if your mother has severe shortness of breath with very little activity (i.e.walking up a stairway), etc. I have known about my mitral valve regurgitation (moderate to severe) for the past 5 years and there doesnt appear to be any progression.
1246614 tn?1268684275 It is very difficult and may not be possible to return the heart to normal. A valve surgeon at the Mayo Clinic states the biggest problem he faces it the patient that has waited too long. Has your left ventricle enlarged? Is your EF 55% or above? You may want to talk to a surgeon. Better time to select while somewhat healthy than wait.
Avatar n tn My dad is not getting any relief after taking medicines either so doctor had suggested valve replacement. So my question is Is valve replacement surgory is safe? after surgory my dad will get relief or not? and how long will this surgory works? main question is Is this surgery is safe or any risk is there? and what is EF, my dad's ef is also very low 26% , 3 months back it was 55%..... please guide me in detail if possible...
Avatar f tn Compared to valve replacement, mitral valve repair provides better long-term survival, better preservation of heart function, lower risk of complications, and usually avoids the need for long-term use of blood thinners (anticoagulation). For these reasons, Cleveland Clinic surgeons are committed to mitral valve repair. Hope this helps. Take care.
