operation

Avatar n tn my sister had open heart surgery.they had to replace one of the main values.butsince she has had the operation her legs swell up.what causes that.
Avatar m tn It sounds to me that you need to read more about the stenting process and how the heart reacts to blockages. Look at the stenting process from a broader perspective is my suggestion. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn My dad is 74 and suffered a major heart attack in October 2013. He also had stents put in. Last month a stress test did not go well and they said there was major blockage in the lower left artery and he would need another stent. However, when they did the procedure this week they informed us that once they got in there the lower left wasn't nearly as bad as they had diagnosed and he didn't need a stent there. But...
Avatar n tn The general rule of thumb is to surgically repair, or replace, the faulty valve when the patient is symptomatic or shows signs of declining cardiac funtion. That said, it's just a general guideline and each patient should be evaluated by their own physicians. Have you seen your cardiologist recently? What is his/her recommendation? Any chance you could go to Cleveland Clinic or Mayo?
367994 tn?1304953593 A few days ago, they found endocarditis, and said they need to replace the mitral valve. Our quandary is, should we chance the operation, as he still has fevers from the MRSA, goes up and down. Would he be able to sustain an operation of this magnitude. The doctors put it all in my court, telling me it is risky; but, also risky if I don't. What I need to know is how risky is it??!! Could someone please help me with this,as time is definitely of the essence!!
Avatar m tn t been able to test it out as the stint is still in. I have been told by the surgeons that this made no difference for them in previous tests but guess that would make it not hurt to try. Guess time will tell. Is the Jones tube the only option? Would there be any risks/side affects associated with wearing the Jones tube? How long would a Jones tube need to be in place for and what is its success rate? How bad is tearing with the Jones tube in place?
Avatar n tn means to say to transplant my heart in to him and to implant his heart in to mine.
Avatar n tn Now the doctor has told her he wants to put a stint in. Could you explain to me what the stint would do? And if you are familiar with this particular type of procedure.
Avatar f tn My symptoms have been the feeling of heart racing, then feeling light headed and at the few seconds of the heart racing, I feel I cannot get my breath. The next test he wants to conduct is a heart cath. Should this be the next test; it seems very invasive.
Avatar f tn The doctors implanted the wrong type (not MRI compatible) and now they tell us that they are willing to replace it! How dangerous is it? The leads are more likely to have grown into the heart tissue by now. We are very afraid of this operation!
2073485 tn?1331662298 The operation itself takes about 3-5 hours to complete. Your sternum will be sawn open, pericardium cut to expose the heart. Then the heart-lung bypass takes over - circulate your blood and wash it and pumped back into body - the heart gets cooled down with ice and then stopped. Surgeon has to work on a heart that is not pumping. Valve gets resected, new valve sewn into place. Heart bypass stop, own heart starts working again or sometimes needs a shock.
Avatar n tn An attenuation artifact indicates a machine induced error and more specifically the artifact was/is related to a low voltage level. There may be an interest by your doctor to verify the finding. Thanks for your question and if you have any further questions or comments you are invited to respond.
Avatar f tn They will usually get a CT scan to make sure the LIMA, if used, does not get disrupted during the initial portion of the surgery. There are always the associated risks of the bypass, and cross clamping of the aorta, which include stroke, distal embolism, kidney damage, etc, and although these are higher in 80 years old they should not be any higher in the re operation versus the first surgery.
Avatar m tn Before the op, a nurse use a razor to remove my pubes to prevent infection during op. However, the nurse accidently scratch my stomach and left a little blood spot in somewhere. I just want to ask dr if I had any risk to infect hiv through the razor (if the patient use it before had infect HIV and had any wound that can left some blood on razor), thank u very much.
Avatar n tn Is this your first stent, or first experience with heart disease? Are you taking new medications, and perhaps exercising more/differently than you were previously? Foot discomfort could be from cholesterol-controlling drugs. If you are walking more, it could be symptoms of what is called Periphial Artery Disease (my spelling doesn't look right) or PAD as it commonly is called.
595144 tn?1219229276 So now, after reading more on this forum and seeing my general practitioner today I have decided to ask for the operation ASAP. I am waiting on a response to my fax to the surgeon and rather hope he doesn't try to talk me out of it..I think you should do likewise, especially if it is causing you anxiety. Dissections are very painful and a detah sentence.
Avatar f tn I had heart surgery at 2. Recently gave birth to my first child a little boy. I was in the boat as you worried. Dr suggested to do ecg 2 weeks before I was due. Ecg is to test your heart to make sure all is good. Since I was low risk so my heart was all fine no drama. I gave birth naturally! All healthy.
Avatar n tn In selected centers in the US the placement of a special bioprosthetic valve is possible transluminally, but this is still in its infancy and not likely to be the standard of care for the next 5 years. It depends on your priorities: if not being on coumadin is more important than needing re-operation 4-5 years sooner then choose the BP. Otherwise choose the mechanical valve. Both have similar infectious rates.
Avatar f tn I have been having terrible chest pain along with heart burn the only way to describe it is it feels like the pain is around my heart and the burning goes all the way up my throat. could this be a heart issue or just bad indigestion?
Avatar m tn Hi Everyone - Just to follow up. Problem SOLVED !!! Now it is 6 months later and I am happy as a clam. My eye drains properly and I have had absolutely ZERO problems with blockage. You know what the problem was I was speaking of? The stint. Yeup. The freakin' stint. When I went in to get the stint taken out, the doctor cut the loop on the outside. BUT, he forgot to pull the darn thing OUT OF MY FACE from inside my nose! SO, about 3 weeks later, apologies for saying this ...
Avatar f tn a diuretic to reduce fluids, (fluid retension causes the heart to work harder), medication to dilate vessels (relieves some work stress on the heart...reduces blood pressure) and medication to increase heart contractions enabling the heart to pump more blood into circulation with each heartbeat. This will give the heart time to recovery and the relief may reduce valve leakage.
Avatar m tn A heart surgeon at Mayo Clinic states the biggest problem he sees is that a patient waits too long before surgical intervention. The consensus is the operation should be done at a time appropriate to preserve left ventricle functionality...EF of 55 to 75%. A loss of LV EF cannot be regained with an operation. Generally, an aneurysm (root greater than 40 mm or 4.0 cm) is closely watched, and if and when the size is 50 mm, surgery would be the option.
Avatar n tn I do not know how much effort you put in that area when you play golf, I guess that is quite asymmetric so you probably place different efforts on each of your groins... Anyway, I would say that if you do not have any pain there and you wait another week to be in the very safe side, you should not have problems. Of course if you have a dr. who plays golf, ask him.
620048 tn?1358018235 He had a very quick recovery, and I think it had something to do with the new heart pump they used right after the procedure. Instead of the standard balloon pump, they used something called the Impella, which helped the heart to pump blood. He felt better immediately after the procedure, but was fatigued for a few days. Are you still feeling bad? After hubby's first stent, it took about two weks for him to recover.
Avatar m tn I had a stint put in on April 7, 2011. Ever since, I have had shortness of breath and a slight pain right below my right collar bone when I do a deep inhale. I take Plaxiz, Metoprolol, and aspirin on a daily basis. Periodically, I feel very fatigued even though I have not done anything strenuous. Any idea why I am constantly short of breath?
