Erijon is correct in that these individual cases are often used to try and disprove the benefits of medications, but they never use the full story. It's the same with the French paradox for the English. Our neighbours consume tons of dairy products yet have very little instance of heart disease compared to us.

Avatar m tn There are certainly a large number of people with national average cholesterol levels, or even lower who have heart disease. There is a lot of research ongoing to try and understand what exactly is going on with lipids and heart disease. There is a link somewhere, but still nobody really knows what it is. Lowering lipids works for many people, but also for many people it definitely doesn't work and this is the reason for the research, it isn't so cut and dry.

Avatar m tn It is also odd how Japan used to be a main protein diet nation, then after hearing scares of fat related heart disease, they switched to carbs. They are now seeing heart disease increasing. I just don't understand what's taking so long in finding the cause. Perhaps they spent too many years looking at fat.

Avatar m tn It take HUGE lifestyle changes to stop heart disease. You have to eat a very healthy diet, exercise regularly, not smoke, stay stress free (not easy in societies of today). I often wonder if the lifestyle changes make medication necessary if you can achieve them. I've not seen a study done on this, but it would be very interesting. Personally, I think a good healthy lifestyle would not require medication unless your heart has already become too bad.
Avatar f tn Since diet plays a part in heart disease I have been on a strict Vegan diet assuming that animal fat or bi-products are clogging my arteries. I began this diet in January of this year. Avatar n tn Seven years ago I had a mild heart attack and in ICU for several days with congested heart failure. I had a stent implant for a 98% blocked right coronary artery, 70% circumflex no intervention, and 100% blocked LAD. The LAD had developed collateral vessels (natural bypass) to supply blood to the area normally supplied by the LAD. I have been successfully treated with medication and today my heart has returned to normal size and effectively pumping blood into circulation.
