Common Questions and Answers about Group a strep infection pregnancy

infection

Avatar f tn I had one daughter at 37 weeks and one on her due date with group b strep. My dr never told me it caused early labor and I've never had a bladder infection or a uti in my life. The antibiotics aren't going to do anything really. Its a bacteria that lives in you and is completely harmless to us.
Avatar f tn I am group b strep positive. All it is is a type of bacteria that lies in your vagina. They will simply give you antibiotics to clear the infection so that your baby doesn't get it when you give birth.
Avatar f tn Group b strep is just a type of bacteria that lives in some womens' vaginas. It's harmless to us and our partners but it can be dangerous to the baby if left untreated when giving birth. It can change from pregnancy to pregnancy so one time a woman may have it and the next time she may not, or both times or not at all. It is treated during labor if a woman has it. It doesn't require an induction or c-section.
Avatar f tn Im a ftm 10+5 and I have gbs(group b strep infectio.) Has anyone had this during there pregnancy?
Avatar f tn I know you need antibiotics during labor to prevent the baby getting infected. But then I read about late onset group strep b.. Which the baby can get up until 3 months old, which can cause meningitis, but you can't prevent it?? Does anybody know about this ?
10270693 tn?1412131615 It's A Bacterial Infection In Your Urine. I Tested Positive For It But If You Do Or Believe You have It, Your Doctor Should Give You Antibiotics To Clear It Up Before It Gets worse. Most Pregnant Women Don't Realize They Do Like Me Until Your Appointments & They Ask You To Urinate In A Cup. Its Very Rare Though It's Said That Only A Few Women Get It During Pregnancy. Its Not An Std Or Anything It's Just Something About A Pregnant Women & The Changes In Her Body.
Avatar n tn I’m looking into group B strep since my new sexual partner was diagnosed with a group B Strep infection. His symptoms of the throat sound similar to yours. He has a very sore throat with bumps/blisters. He went to urgent care, they did s quick test for group A strep (regular “strep throat”) which came back negative. They told him that he most likely had s Vidal infection, took a culture, and would contact him in a couple days. The results came back that he has group b strep.
7172456 tn?1403092946 If you have Group B Strep and you are pregnant, the doctor needs to know. Babies can become very sick from a Group B strep infection but this is not 100% i.e., not every baby born to a Group B strep infected mother gets sick. Are you pregnant? Group B strep is treated with penicillin or the like.
Avatar n tn Ah just found out I have group B strep infection and freaking out. Dr said it's mild case and put me on antibiotics but I'm still scared that it could cause damage to bubs. I'm 7 weeks by the way? Anyone else is in the same situation?
Avatar f tn Agreed^ and when they test you it's usually colonized meaning it's just in your body at that time. I'm almost 11 weeks postpartum and I actually just got Strep B but an infection so I'm on a high dose of antibiotics. During pregnancy it's absolutely nothing to worry about, but if you were to get it not being pregnant, it can be serious, I actually knew someone who got sepsis, which is Strep B in her blood and died...
2137220 tn?1340741325 Group b strep is an infection about 30% of women get during pregnancy and during delivery (vaginally) it can cause harm to the baby. If the risk is that low then induction may not be worth it. I worry cuz my delivery for last baby was two hours, I'm afraid I won't make it to the hospital with this one! Let alone get a gud dose of antibiotics in. Next appt is Wednesday so I'll ask my ob and go from there.
Avatar n tn It is pretty unlikely that the group B strep is causing difficulties. Group B strep is a bacteria that is pretty common - present in up to 20%% of women from time to time, and rarely if ever leads to an infection that causes infertility. Since it comes and goes, you may even have had group B strep in the past. How long ago was the miscarriage? If only a few months ago, I recommend continuing to try. If the miscarriage was a year or more ago, you should see an infertility specialist.

1106300 tn?1258070957 I have a lot of discharge as well and this is my first pregnancy. I have group b strep but I dont think discharge is a sign of it?
Avatar f tn It is routine for doctors to test all women between 35-37 weeks for Group B strep because about 25% of of women have it. Your doc tested you early because you were high risk. You doc till treat you with antibiotics now and probably test you again later to keep an eye on it. I tested positive during the 35th week screening at one of my regular prenatal visits.
Avatar m tn s possible to get it again. Think of it like a yeast infection - we can cure a current yeast infection, which is something we naturally have but can have an overgrowth, but it's possible that a woman will get another one in her lifetime. This is nothing to worry about - she's going to be fine.
6088943 tn?1381725210 Group b strep can increase the risk of wound infection in C-sections. And it's still important for them to test you in case you go into natural labor before your scheduled c section. Should be fine unless your water breaks before your surgery. That's what I found when I did my research last night. And thanks to all for the info. It really helps! I'm assuming my doctor will test me on my next visit or 2 since I'm 35 weeks now. Hopefully! Good luck everyone!
Avatar f tn //www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/antenatalhealth/physicalhealth/groupbstrep/ But although some people can carry Strep B in there below area. I would still see your GP!
7249862 tn?1392252689 Well group b strep affected both my pregnancys with my daughter's I had it with my first at 15 because I'm a carrier of group b strep and my wagers went at 12weeks and I delivered her at 23 weeks she couldn't make it because her lungs didnt develope and she couldn't move or cry and then I had my 2nd daughter in November at 21+6 but doctors didn't give me anything because I wasnt 24 weeks and my baby didn't had a chance of surviving they both past away but it only affects
Avatar f tn Those women who test positive for GBS are said to be colonized The bacteria that causes group B strep normally lives in the intestine, vagina, or rectal areas. Group B strep colonization is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Approximately 25% of all healthy women carry group B strep bacteria.
Avatar m tn now. Because you have a Group B strep UTI you should automatically receive antibiotics when you are in labor. Penicillin G is one option. Until your membranes rupture there is little chance that the bacteria will enter the uterus because the mucus plug and membranes are a natural barrier to infection. You probably had the bacteria in the vagina and cervix before the exam--because if it is in the bladder that means it is very likely in the rectum/vagina too.

1309410 tn?1273688027 t think that your water breaking will relate to your last pregnancy. I think each pregnancy is different and it just depends on your body. Also Group B Strep does not increase your chances of your water breaking. It is a normal thing for your body but just not for the baby when it comes out so your body will not react to it. You will just need antibiotics at delivery. Good luck and I hope your delivery goes well.
Avatar f tn I was just pregnant but the pregnancy ended in week 9 ,,,no heat beat, When I was pregant i had a culture done and came back group b strep I have always had vaginal cultures and were always negative for group b strep and std. The worst i have had was yeast infections. I had a D&C proceedure since the pregnancy did not go well, had another culture done and came back positive for group b strp w/ a little yeast.
