Avatar n tn I believe the statistic is less than 50% of those who have Graves thyroid disease develop any symptoms of Graves Eye Disease. Each is caused by different sets of antibodies. Some people get eye disease without ever having thyroid problems. And, of those with Graves/thyroid who do develop eye disease, only about 5% of those ever develop serious enough eye problems (bulging, eyelid retraction, double vision, optic nerve issues) to warrant surgery.
Avatar f tn What kind of eye problems do you have? Thyroid eye disease symptoms first start as a lot of tearing and a dry, gritting feeing in the eyes. Later symptoms include the bulging eyeballs that most have heard about, and sometimes, double vision. It isn't normally associated with poor vision unless caused by double vision or pressure on the optic nerve(which is very rare).
Avatar n tn i have swelling in my eye lids, when i look down one eye lid lags and looks partially closed,in the mornings the swelling is more, doctors say it is thyroid related and there is no medicine only steroids is the answer and they have dangerous side effect,i visited the endocronoligist he says look at your reports you dont require any thyroid treatment if i dont require any thyroid treatment then why are my eyes swelling when i look extreme up i see double vision when i look extreme left i see double
Avatar f tn Hi, I am a 28 year old woman and was diagnosed with graves disease 3 years ago. I have commented o many forums regarding my problem but would like your advice. I was treated with radio active iodine in 2006 and then became hypothyroid, I now take 150mg of levothyroxine daily. I have never suffered from graves opthalmology as far as i'm aware. For the last 6 months I have had a chronic daily headache. This started 3 days after purchasing new glasses.
534194 tn?1213416842 I have Graves' eye disease, not bulging eyes. Mine is swollen eyelids. My vision is blurry and it has worsened over the course of three years. My thyroid eye specialist said that there is a thickening of my muscles behind the eyes. I get double vision and extreme sensitivity to light. If I'm in the sun too long, even with sunglasses, I see bright white spots. I'm wondering if anyone has the same Graves' eye disease I did, swollen eyelids and what the prognosis was?
Avatar f tn But since Graves treatment, weight has plagued me (along with fatigue, hair loss, vision issues, anxiety/depression at times) but ALWAYS THE DARNED weight!!! Now, new endo says RAI is what she would’ve advised originally...as I’m going to most likely end up hypO and taking synthroid/levo for the rest of my life. Ugh. Anyone manage to get their weight back under control after RAI? Or on synthroid? I’m dreading this! I’m scared of RAI.
Avatar n tn I have been going to an Endocrinologist for almost 1 year. He has done several ultrasounds showing that I have 5 tumors on my thyroid. I have a biopsy which showed they were benign. I recently had another ultrasound which showed one of the tumors had shrunk but another one appeared.
620695 tn?1221490231 I was diagnosed with Graves Disease in May. I have gone Hypo & am now on 100mcg of Synthroid & ?? Cytomel. I have been on this dosage since Aug. 2 and am still suffering with extreme fluid retension on my face, fatiguem weight gain, & vision problems. I am most worried about my vision. Besides constantly 'weeping' due to the fluid, I am having great difficulty focusing.
Avatar f tn hi I have recently seen my doctor about 2 lumps on either side of my neck, he done blood tests which he said were basically fine, I am now having blurred vision and the lumps are causing uncomfortable ache in the back of my head, I have read about graves disease and many of the symptoms I have, could the doctor have missed graves disease?
Avatar n tn They sound like they are caused by Graves Eye Disease (also known as Thyroid Eye Disease) which is caused by different anti-bodies than the ones that caused your Graves Thyroid Disease. These antibodies cause a fat-like substance to be deposited in the muscles behind the eyes, which eventually push the eye out of the socket, causing the characteristic stare. Somehow they eye movement also causes the lid retraction you are referring to. The antibodies can be blood tested for, I believe.
Avatar n tn he could have graves disease? i am suffering from graves with similar symptoms without the weight loss I am atypical of this symptom (of course) and have gained weight. they will start him on meds to help out his levels back to normal.
522070 tn?1233756919 Treatment of hyperthyroidism does not treat Graves Eye Disease. The symptoms of GED are frequent tearing (I developed eye problems months before I developed thyroid problems, I thought it was allergies), gritty feeling in the eyes. As the eye disease progresses, the eyes can bulge out of the sockets, lid lag and retraction can develop and double vision can develop. As far as anit-thyroid meds go, most docs will treat with them for 12-18 months before recommending RAI or surgery.
Avatar f tn Prisms can be incorporated into the glasses or stuck on all the back surface of the lens "fresnel prisms" Tape won't cut it.
Avatar f tn What antibodies test was done? With your symptoms it seems like a test for Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin (TSI), to test for Graves' Disease, would have been in order.
Avatar m tn m not sure if this helps at all, but I experience double vision because I have Graves Disease ( thyroid condition) and I also have Graves Eye Disease. The Eye Disease made my eyes swell which caused the double vision. As recommened by michelle, an opthalmologist is whom you should contact. The eyes are so sensitive and if you are experiencing this problem, a call to this type of Doc. is very important.
Avatar n tn Is a droopy eyelid with vision problems (focusing) related to Thyroid; and if so, is it Hyper or Hypo? Has anyone had this problem, and what tests do you recommend? Thank you!
Avatar n tn After being diagnosed with Graves Disease, I opted to have my Thyroid obliterated using the Radioactive Iodine Therapy procedure. During the transition of losing the Thyroid, I lost a good portion of my vision in my right eye. Was told that the vision loss is due to AION (Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropothy). Once I lost my vision, I began to feel "unbalanced" or "light headed" at all times. Sometimes this feeling diminishes but it never really disappears.
415098 tn?1214856836 From what you have described, this may be due to migraine type of headaches most commonly due to stressful situations or inadequate rest. Knowing your previous history of graves disease and previous radiation treatment, these symptoms may be a sign of going hypothyroid together with some electrolyte abnormalities. I suggest that you be referred to a specialist like a neurologist just to make sure. Other causes would include deficiencies in vitamins (especially vitamin B) or calcium.
Avatar f tn Earlier this week my doc called and said that I have Graves disease. I have had extreme tiredness for the last year and vision problems for at least six months. I got an appointment with an endo doc but it's a month away. How long after starting treatment do the tiredness and vision problems go away? Or do they go away? It is hard for my eyes to focus when I read and they are very sensitive to light. I have only five months left of college and I would like to have my vision back.
Avatar f tn I've just been diagnosed with Graves' Disease. I have autoimmune thyroid disease that has changed from being primary Hashimoto's thyroiditis to Graves's Disease. I was diagnosed in 1997 with Fibromyalgia. I also have severe osteoarthritis, especially in both hands. What am I doing wrong? The doctor told me I'm a very strange case. What's that mean?
Avatar n tn I am a 47 year old woman. About 4 years ago I had sudden onset of double vision - worsening and continues to today. I also lost my hearing in the left ear about the same time. I have been through all the tests, MRI, blood tests, and repeat MRI 4 years later. Nothing shows up. I recently was sent to an opto-neurologist and he did a myathenis graves tests and MRI and all came back negative. However, since July the double vision has got worse. I now wear 30 prisms in my glasses.
Avatar n tn I have Graves and I can't wear contacts more than a couple of hours or I get dry eye discomfort. I use to have bouts of really bad eye pain before I was diagnosed with Graves/hyperthyroidism. I've never been diagnosed with an eye disease but am positive it's related to Graves. I couldn't do lasik either b/c they said I have really thin corneas.
