why after almost two years do I still have graves symptoms.
I was diagnosed with graves disease and had the radioactive treatment to destroy it a few years back. I have had a few times where I did not have my meds for a week at a time. Is it normal to feel so tired and cranky? Also I took Zirtec for my allergies and I felt like I was cloudy and just wanted to sleep and tightness in my chest..... I am currently on 137 mcg of Levothyroxine.
I am a 25 y/o female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 and later with Graves Disease and Goiter. I have been on Tapazol along with Atenelol (for the Tachacardia) off and on for the past 9 years with no results. Every doc I see wants to discuss nothing but RAI or surgery. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years with no success. I finally found out that I was pregnant the beginning of last year and made it to 4 months and suffered a miscarriage for no apparent reason.
MY TSH IS LOW BUT MY T3 AND T4 ARE NORMAL MY TPO WAS OVER 24,000 MY TPI WAS ELEVATED AND MY SCAN SHOWED NODULES AND GRAVES BUT AGAIN I DO NOT HAVE ANY SYMPTOMS BUT WEIGHT WHICH RIGHT NOW I AM OK WITH AS MY WEIGHT CURRENTLY IS 145. I HAVE THE MEDICATION TAPAZOLE 5MG BUT MY ENDO TOLD ME TO JUST TAKE 1/2 A PILL EVERY OTHER DAY. I WAS JUST HOPING THAT MAYBE IT WOULD HELP LOSE THE COUPLE OF POUNDS I HAVE GAINED.
my sister has hd graves disease for about a year she does not take med. right she has not gotten blood work for about four months she just keeps taking med because she has refills she is getting really crazy she thinks people are trying to kill her coul this be from graves disease

Hi, I am a 28 year old woman and was diagnosed with graves disease 3 years ago. I have commented o many forums regarding my problem but would like your advice. I was treated with radio active iodine in 2006 and then became hypothyroid, I now take 150mg of levothyroxine daily. I have never suffered from graves opthalmology as far as i'm aware.
For the last 6 months I have had a chronic daily headache. This started 3 days after purchasing new glasses.
I am sorry that you are having such symptoms which can affect your life. It is always worth getting a second opinion if you aren't satisfied with treatment. My option for my Graves Disease treatment was simple, take methimazole or do RI. I chose the med which worked pretty well for me until I was taken off of it. Which my Thyroid went hyper again.
Last year I was diagnosed with Graves disease and had a radioactive ablation done in April. Sometime around March of 2009, my eyelids became puffy and my eyes were usually watery. I called my Endocrinologist and asked if this was related to my thyroid and she sugg. I visit my Primary Care Dr. I did and he followed an allergy path. I finally went to an allergist who said that allergies may be playing a role, it was not the primary cause.
Something we did not expect was him having Aortic Stenosis. Graves Disease causes numerous symptoms so we thought it was the disease causing his heart problems. He just took the treatment for the Graves so it's going to be a month or so before the treatment starts to show some results. He has another test scheduled next week with an Interventional Cardiologist.
I've read alot of material on Graves Disease and Aortic Stenosis, but I have not found any material on having both diseases.

Hello. I'm 36 and I am almost 9 weeks pregnant. I have Graves' disease and had radiation treatment back in 2009. I hadn't been taking my thyroxine constantly for a few months as I was super stressed and now that I am pregnant haven't missed a dose. My thyroid levels are still very high and I'm worried that this will affect my baby's brain development/IQ levels. Has anyone else had similar experiences? I'm scared and worried.
Graves Disease is never cured BUT it is managed better without a thyroid or after RAI.
You still have the antibodies but no thyroid for it to attack.
As for meds, you swap one lot for another.
You go from anti-thyroid meds to a T4 medication so basically you are on meds for life.
The thyroid regulates every organ in your body and if no thyroid, meds have to do the job.
Hyperthyroidism is a lot easier to manage without a thyroid.
The symptoms of Graves Disease would be those of hyperthyroidism, such as sudden weight loss, sweating when others are comfortable to cool, diarrhea, hand tremors, heart palpitations (these can be present with hypothyroidism as well), rapid heart rate, irritability, mood swings, fatigue and many others.
s Disease is an auto-immune disease that MAKES your thyroid the problem. The only treatment for the disease is to treat the thyroid.
It sounds like you were rushed into making a choice, which is too bad. Had you been given six months or a year to mull it over, you probably would have still chosen RAI over the other two choices.
I was diagnosed in April 2011 with Hashimoto's (the dx came after several different rounds of bloodwork, a thyroid ultrasound and the nuclear uptake scan.) I was prescribed synthroid and was told "we'd have to wait and see" how my symptoms responded to the meds. I would go for labwork every 6-8 weeks and each time, either I had to increase or decrease my synthroid dosage.
I was diagnosed with Graves disease 11 years ago. My endo prescribed Methimazole, which I was allergic to, so he told me he didn't want to prescribe me anything else because sometimes the allergy kills the thyroid. It apparently did, because all of a sudden I was hypo and I had to go on synthroid. Since then, I lost my health insurance and got handled by my PCP instead of the endo (cheaper).
iam apatient who suffers graves disease. My question is : Although I am almost 4 months on Carbamizole treatment 60 mg + Taking inderal ( propanalol), but the levels of my T4 & T3 are still high and the levels of TSH is less than 0.01.
what do you think , should i sstop the medication and think of the other allternatives like the radioactive iodine or surgical removal?
