625189 tn?1221929051 I had my TT and RAI at U of M and have been nothing but happy with them. I'll be meeting my new endo in October, but have been assured that she's a good one. Everyone there has been so helpful and nice. Not sure how far it would be for you to travel there, but it takes me right around 2 hours. It's kind of a pain, but it's worth it!
Avatar n tn I have had steroids for my eyes and and tapazole nothing has worked. I have toxic nodoles along with Graves disease. I have changed my diet and tried different things what do you suggest. I'm not sleeping, I have gained most of my weight back with increased heart beat. What can I do.
1674106 tn?1403379490 * Anti-thyroid medication (first choice for treatment in uncomplicated Graves' disease): Methimazole (Tapazole) Propylthiouracil (PTU) Carbimazole (Neomercazole) - not available in the US Anti-thyroid medications decrease the level of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The goal with anti-thyroid drug treatment is to decrease the thyroid antibodies and induce remission.
Avatar n tn I have learned that there are risks of lukemia and other cancers that the doctor never mentioned. Also, Graves disease is autoimmune....which means it is not your thyroid that is to blame for your problems. Needless to say I am looking for a new doctor. I just don't know how I am going to live with the ringing ears, closing throat and feeling of drunkeness. I want to say to my DR. "THANKS A LOT DR. FOR MAKING ME WORSE.
Avatar f tn Conventional treatment options for Graves' disease include: * Anti-thyroid medication: In the US: - Methimazole [brand name Tapazole] - Propylthiouracil [PTU] Approximately 30% with Graves' disease will have a remission after prolonged treatment with anti-thyroid drugs.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with graves disease and had the radioactive treatment to destroy it a few years back. I have had a few times where I did not have my meds for a week at a time. Is it normal to feel so tired and cranky? Also I took Zirtec for my allergies and I felt like I was cloudy and just wanted to sleep and tightness in my chest..... I am currently on 137 mcg of Levothyroxine.
Avatar n tn s an autoimmune disease that unfortunately always plagues you in one shape or another even after the radiated iodine treatment. Since thyroid disease runs in my family, and I have borderline hyperthyroid tendencies, I always keep an eye on the thyroid board on MedHelp. The folks there are very knowledgeable. You may want to pop in there for some advice as well. Both diseases (FM and Graves symptoms overlap) Make sure you stop back in both places. Take care.
Avatar n tn I-131 is a common treatment for Graves' (which you appear to have) but we often use methimazole as first-line treatment. I-131 may increase risk of thyroid eye disease especially in smokers.
Avatar f tn I am a 25 y/o female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 and later with Graves Disease and Goiter. I have been on Tapazol along with Atenelol (for the Tachacardia) off and on for the past 9 years with no results. Every doc I see wants to discuss nothing but RAI or surgery. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years with no success. I finally found out that I was pregnant the beginning of last year and made it to 4 months and suffered a miscarriage for no apparent reason.
Avatar n tn I have been going to an Endocrinologist for almost 1 year. He has done several ultrasounds showing that I have 5 tumors on my thyroid. I have a biopsy which showed they were benign. I recently had another ultrasound which showed one of the tumors had shrunk but another one appeared.
Avatar f tn My eyes are so dry and they buldge. Are you a smoker? Smoking makes the eye disease worse. It is very common to have Graves of the eyes if you have Graves Thyroid disease. My doctor told me that he would treat me with prednisone to get the swelling behind my eyes down and last resort would be surgery. You probably need to research an eye doctor that specializes in Graves. Where do you live? My doctor is at Rush Hospital in Chicago.
Avatar f tn m so happy you reply to me, thank you!! I have graves disease. When i first began my treatment i was taken 10 pills of 10mg each a day, but that's when i start having the muscle pain, the alkaline low and other one i can't remember the name, but i know it had to do with the liver, which showed it was high. When i went to the 2nd specialist he told me i was hypo.
Avatar n tn The three standard treatments for Graves Disease are anti thyroid drugs (which you are taking now), RAI treatment and total thyroidectomy. Usually, drugs are used to treat intially and to stabilize thyroid levels before either of the other 2 treatments are considered. In some cases, anti thyroid drugs are used for 12-18 months to treat. In some cases, remission is achieved using drugs and no further treatment is needed. However, this only happens in relatively few cases.
Avatar f tn my son was a newly diagnosed "graves disease" pt. he was given tatazole tablet 5mg. to be taken after breakfast for one month, what are the side effect of tatazole, the things he have to avoid and if you can give me more/additional information about the disease. thanks!
Avatar f tn I really thought I was losing my mind, I have had this for about 4 yrs and just now was diagnosed with Graves disease. My Dr put me on Methimazole and after 3 weeks had a severe reaction and was covered head to toe with a horrible insanely itchy rash. Mr Endo told me I have a couple options radio active iodine or somthing else which he did not tell me what. My question is how has the radio active iodine worked for others?
Avatar f tn How did your family doctor make the diagnosis of Graves disease? Did he perform a radioactive iodine uptake scan? Did he test your blood for antibodies that are present with Graves disease? An endo is much more familiar with the diseases of our glanduar systems, but that doesnt mean your gp. couldnt make the call. I have Graves and my immediate symptoms were: rapid heart beat, weight loss, shakey hands, anxiety attacks and a few more.
Avatar f tn You have Graves Disease, so they give you Tapazole... are they giving you high enough doses of the tapazole to make you go hypo or are you swinging hypo? On what basis were you diagnosed with Graves Disease?
Avatar f tn my sister has hd graves disease for about a year she does not take med. right she has not gotten blood work for about four months she just keeps taking med because she has refills she is getting really crazy she thinks people are trying to kill her coul this be from graves disease This discussion is related to TSH Levels at 3.75.
Avatar f tn I have had Graves' disease for nine years now, in and out of remission four or five times. I am allergic to PTU and Neomercazole and my doctor said that when I see my endocrinologist in a weeks time that he will advise RAI or perhaps surgery. Would that be whatever suits him I am wondering or what treatment that I would rather select. I have heard horror stories such as the medicine reaching other tissues, i.e. breasts, ovaries, bowel and thryoid.
Avatar f tn My fiance' was diagnosed with Graves Disease late last year. Something we did not expect was him having Aortic Stenosis. Graves Disease causes numerous symptoms so we thought it was the disease causing his heart problems. He just took the treatment for the Graves so it's going to be a month or so before the treatment starts to show some results. He has another test scheduled next week with an Interventional Cardiologist.
Avatar m tn The symptoms of Graves Disease would be those of hyperthyroidism, such as sudden weight loss, sweating when others are comfortable to cool, diarrhea, hand tremors, heart palpitations (these can be present with hypothyroidism as well), rapid heart rate, irritability, mood swings, fatigue and many others.
Avatar f tn I did read that RAI is the treatment of choice in the US as opposed to Europe and Japan where it is the final choice of treatment. Makes me think that the US is always looking for the quick fix. I did try to find support group for Graves but there is none in my area. Because I did refuse the RAI that first day in Doc office I will have a blood test on Nov, 25 I hope the doc changes his attitude about my having the RAI. I am on a low dose of methimazole (10mg 1X daily).
Avatar f tn Graves Disease is never cured BUT it is managed better without a thyroid or after RAI. You still have the antibodies but no thyroid for it to attack. As for meds, you swap one lot for another. You go from anti-thyroid meds to a T4 medication so basically you are on meds for life. The thyroid regulates every organ in your body and if no thyroid, meds have to do the job. Hyperthyroidism is a lot easier to manage without a thyroid.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am a 28 year old woman and was diagnosed with graves disease 3 years ago. I have commented o many forums regarding my problem but would like your advice. I was treated with radio active iodine in 2006 and then became hypothyroid, I now take 150mg of levothyroxine daily. I have never suffered from graves opthalmology as far as i'm aware. For the last 6 months I have had a chronic daily headache. This started 3 days after purchasing new glasses.
