Avatar n tn Looking for a medical opinion about treating Graves...start w/antithyroid drugs or go straight to RAI. My concern is long term effects with RAI...cancer...not with replacement hormone for hypothyroid status. He is young and not totally through puberty...started early...should a permanent treatment like RAI be postponed till he's older if anti thyroid drugs don't put him in remission?
Avatar n tn There is a lot of information on the internet regarding Graves Disease (hyper thyroid) and treatment options. I would suggest doing thorough research on all of it, and even taking that information in with you to the doctor. That's what I did and I felt very informed for helping to make a good decision along with the doctor.
Avatar n tn Has your doctor told you, you have Graves Disease? Yes, your TSH is extremely low and your FT4 is extremely high, indicating that you are hyper, but your antibody tests indicate Hashimoto's. TSI is the definitive test for Graves Disease and I don't see that listed. Have you been put on antithyroid med?
Avatar f tn In the mid august I had my second visit with the endocrinologist who continued insisting with Graves disease. When I questioned her about the absence of Graves antibodies she responded that I had the abTG antibodies to confirm the diagnosis. Now, one month after my latest tests, I am confident I have entered hypothyroidism. I have been eating less, yet I have gained 2-3pounds in 10 days. I am sure it's water retention. I feel a bit tired. My last period came 4 days earlier than usual!
1674106 tn?1403379490 * Anti-thyroid medication (first choice for treatment in uncomplicated Graves' disease): Methimazole (Tapazole) Propylthiouracil (PTU) Carbimazole (Neomercazole) - not available in the US Anti-thyroid medications decrease the level of thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The goal with anti-thyroid drug treatment is to decrease the thyroid antibodies and induce remission.
743774 tn?1232673183 So I managed to get my first and last appointment with an endo. Due to my symptoms, blood tests, (super low tsh, very bad cholesterol, ((and I eat VERY well)), what she could physically feel as a swollen thyroid, my age and gender, (40 yo male), she said she's 90% sure it's Graves disease and RAI will likely be the treatment. But of course before all that I need an uptake scan and more blood tests to be sure.
552173 tn?1282603290 One thing more is that treatment of graves disease is antithyroid drugs and sometimes they lower the thyroid levels which can cause hypothyroidism and complicate the picture. So regular estimation of thyroid hormone levels is important. If the symptoms persist, then the other causes which I have mentioned earlier should be probed. Hope this helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.Kind regards.
Avatar f tn I have graves disease. the endo dr wants me on antithyroid med for next 3 weeks , checking my blood each week. I want surgery asap. he says i need to be on the antithyroid med for a bit first and he will get with my ins and select a surgeon for me. he said my thyroid could be storing hormones inside it as part of this disease and wants to shrink it.
Avatar f tn I recently got a copy of the results for bloodwork and am confused as to what it all means. My doctor had diagnosed me with graves disease (based on thyroid profile and radioactive iodine uptake/scan) and had ordered this additional testing. T4, free 3.89 (0.8-1.8) TSH - ultrasensative <0.01 (0.35-5.
Avatar m tn Ever scince I have been diagnosed with graves disease I have had unmeasurable TSH numbers always comming back 0.001. My doctor wants to do RAI but I thought TSH numbers need to be elevated for this treatment to work. Is this true and if so how do we bring this number up?
Avatar m tn Hi, I was sent for a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) after my miscarriage. The HSG uses an iodine contrast dye that is injected into the uterus. My gyn is aware that I have Grave disease and am allergy to shellfish. I was euthyroid before the HSG procedure. 2 weeks after the HSG, my TSH decreased from 1.47 to 0.04. My Ft4 and Ft3 increase from mid range to the upper range. My question is does HSG trigger a new episode of grave disease?
Avatar f tn I don't have Graves, so I can't answer your questions, but I know there are several on here who do have Graves and will be able to help you. What I can do, is to wish you the best of luck, no matter what decision you make.
Avatar n tn You seem to be on too much antithyroid medication. Your FT4 is LOW and you don't have enough conversion to get T3 back up for energy. Your doctor should be thinking of lowering your antithyroid therapy and see if you stabilize better alone right now Your having surgery? How come?
Avatar m tn Ask your Mothers Doc to test for Graves Disease by running a TSI blood test. Also while on anti-thyroid meds...your mother should have her levels tested every 2-3 weeks or she can ho higher in levels (hyper) or can go Hypo (low). Hyperthyroidism is usually caused by Graves Disease. Get this checked and also ask the Doc to test her levels again. This time ..ask him to do FREE T4, FREE T3 and not the normal T's as those tests are outdated.
1144144 tn?1264144090 Also with Graves Disease, you have that for life so most Doctors will start you off on an antithyroid medication and restest you in 3-4 weeks to see how you are reacting to the dosage of the meds. Dont stop the beta blocker (athenol) as Graves and Hyperthyroidism can cause fibrillation (thyroid storm) which is not very pleasant and can be dangerous. As for the itching...this is basically a sign that your Graves antibodies are causing a reaction.
Avatar f tn Hi I have graves disease and in the last 2 months I have been losing mass amounts of hair. Why all the sudden am I losing my hair?
Avatar f tn Those who already were overweight, whose hyperthyroidism was caused by Graves Disease, or who had lost weight prior to diagnosis all had similar amounts of weight gain, which was approximately 5 to 5.5 kg (11 to 12 pounds) over the six months during which they were treated with antithyroid drugs for radioactive iodine. Those who had their thyroid removed gained even more weight, an average of 10 kg (11 pounds).
Avatar n tn Graves is an autoimmune disease and unfortunately for life. Controlling whether they raise or suppress is key to beating the symptoms of the disease. If you are on Levo now - your labs must be abnormal and now lean towards hypoT levels. You would feel like cr@p right now with the swinging patterns you have been on. "Once Graves.... always Graves" is the saying here. But I am positive your endo or ???
1039061 tn?1257878294 Hi everyone! I posted a question about a month ago, asking for some advice with the problems I was/am having with my thyroid. When I posted the question, one person who responded said I should post my labs and the results with the guidelines that were used. So I am going to post them because I still need help. So here are the tests that I have had done: ( I am typing them just how they appear on the copies that I have) Lab: Anti Thyroglobulin Antibodies 250h IU/mL 0 - 34 Lab: Total T4 6.
Avatar f tn So unless your Graves' has gone into remission, stopping the Methimazole would eventually only put you back to square one: hyperthyroid. Seems like a reduction to 5 mg would be the better idea. I have read that nearly half of patients who take antithyroid medications for their Graves' disease go into remission.
Avatar f tn M PCP told me i had graves disease and referred me to an endo. The endo said that all of my symptoms "were in my head and nothing was wrong". A few years go by and I see my PCP again and asked how I have been treating my thyroid problems and I said "I don't have one". He showed me the consult report from the Endo confirming my PCP diagnosis. My question is this, What am I to do now? I have lost about 20 lbs. when i only weighed 110 2years ago and hair loss.
4939681 tn?1361299299 "Hashitoxicosis: What Your Labs Will Look Like "Hey, Endos, Listen Up!" Here's what stumps doctors most when you are dealing with Hashitoxicosis - your labs. Due to this constant cycling of hypo to hyper from minute to minute and hour to hour, the net effect of these changes is a zero sum game - normal labs." - Hashitoxicosis: Does It Really Exist? YES!
Avatar f tn I am 32, have seen my Family Dr. I was diagnosed with graves disease. I have also seen a endocrinologist who has told me is was a goiter. Im confused, I know my thyroid is getting larger.
