Hello. I'm 36 and I am almost 9 weeks pregnant. I have Graves' disease and had radiation treatment back in 2009. I hadn't been taking my thyroxine constantly for a few months as I was super stressed and now that I am pregnant haven't missed a dose. My thyroid levels are still very high and I'm worried that this will affect my baby's brain development/IQ levels. Has anyone else had similar experiences? I'm scared and worried.
My uncle has Grave's disease. It's an autoimmune disease that unfortunately always plagues you in one shape or another even after the radiated iodine treatment. Since thyroid disease runs in my family, and I have borderline hyperthyroid tendencies, I always keep an eye on the thyroid board on MedHelp. The folks there are very knowledgeable. You may want to pop in there for some advice as well. Both diseases (FM and Graves symptoms overlap) Make sure you stop back in both places.
As I understand it, having your thyroid removed makes you immediately hypo, and you have to take synthroids to supply your hormones. I can't say for sure, as I had the RAI treatment done instead of surgery.
i feel like my legs are going to collapse, i feel sick all the time, im just looking for a doctor that will listen to me because my symptoms are getting worse. what i understand about graves disease is that it is an autoimmune disease and that there is no cure, but the endocrinologist is taking it so lighly because my readings are fine, what am i to do??
I am a 25 y/o female diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at 16 and later with Graves Disease and Goiter. I have been on Tapazol along with Atenelol (for the Tachacardia) off and on for the past 9 years with no results. Every doc I see wants to discuss nothing but RAI or surgery. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a few years with no success. I finally found out that I was pregnant the beginning of last year and made it to 4 months and suffered a miscarriage for no apparent reason.
Thyroid levels are the prevailing diagnose. So, if your thyroid levels are normal, what constitutes you as having Graves' disease?

I have Graves disease so my thyroid is all messed up. I was diagnosed in 2015 at 16 with TSH levels at about 420. I went into remission for the last 2 years after taking Methimazole but my thyroid levels have reached over 200 so I'm taking a radioactive iodine pill in the fall before I go back to college. From my understanding being on no medication after the thyroid has been stopped can be the reason for your exhaustion. Your thyroid is directly related to your heart.
Similarly, sarcoidosis of the thyroid gland may develop in response to an established thyroid disorder including Graves’ disease, nodular goiter, and thyroid cancer. Patients with Graves’ disease may also have concomitant conditions of sarcoidosis affecting the lungs. Patients with systemic sarcoidosis may also develop sarcoid lesions in various organs including the thyroid gland.
Have you had your thyroid removed or RAI which made you hypo? Levothyroxine is prescribed for hypo patients; not used for Graves Disease unless one's thyroid has been removed/destroyed.
What are your current thyroid blood test results? You should be getting tested for Free T3, Free T4 and TSH, on a regular basis. Please post your results, and be sure to include reference ranges, which vary lab to lab and have to come from your own report.
iam apatient who suffers graves disease. My question is : Although I am almost 4 months on Carbamizole treatment 60 mg + Taking inderal ( propanalol), but the levels of my T4 & T3 are still high and the levels of TSH is less than 0.01.
what do you think , should i sstop the medication and think of the other allternatives like the radioactive iodine or surgical removal?
hi i'm a 28 yr old woman and have suffered badly with symptoms from graves disease for 3yrs i've been on propylthiouracil for a year now as i had a severe allergic reaction to carbimazole!
my symptoms include insomnia,severe fatigue,anxiety,bouts of depression,poor concentration,memory loss,bruising easily,dizziness,nausea and graves rage and weakened immune system (sick often). the problem is that i've recently had a blood test that read normal at 5.
I was diagnosed with graves disease in 1979. I had most of my thyroid removed and 2 parathroids too. I am now hypothyroid and hypoparathyroid. My question is; what are the symptoms of graves after surgery. I am always constipated - no matter what I do. My thyroid levels are good according to my doctor and now she is working on getting my cortisol levels in check. I was also recently diagnosed with celiac disease.
I also have Graves disease and from my understanding you are never "cured", but, once your thyroid is either dead or you have it removed you should no longer be suffering from the symptoms. Except the protruding eyes, that is the only symptom that they can't reverse. That you are going to have to live with for the rest of your life. That's why it's so important to get treated before that happens. I would say that your tiredness is from being perimenopausal.
Oh wow!!!! You really said you'd "rather deal with hyper thyroid than no thyroid'?!? I have hashi's AND graves' and there comes a point when you are so sick and tired of hearing "lets just wait and see" from the doctors...These disorders ROB you of a normal life and "dealing" with them for some of us is not an option....
my sister has hd graves disease for about a year she does not take med. right she has not gotten blood work for about four months she just keeps taking med because she has refills she is getting really crazy she thinks people are trying to kill her coul this be from graves disease

I had a friend with graves disease...they shut her thyroid down and put her on synthroid and she is doing sooooo much better...you MUST do something about your problem...It's a very serious thing to just let it go.... I've had 6 surgerys in my life .... you will be fine .... if you don't do anything about it you will be in big trouble. Don't be afraid of surgery... Get yourself on the road to health.... NOW..
Graves is an autoimmune disease and unfortunately for life. Controlling whether they raise or suppress is key to beating the symptoms of the disease.
If you are on Levo now - your labs must be abnormal and now lean towards hypoT levels. You would feel like cr@p right now with the swinging patterns you have been on.
"Once Graves.... always Graves" is the saying here. But I am positive your endo or ???
I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have graves & thyroid eye disease too. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
If you have active thyroid eye disease, please, do not have any more RAI, it will worsen you eyes. You have a complicated case due to Graves & toxic nodules. The Graves may be treated with the RAI but the toxic nodules can still be excreting thyroid hormone keeping you hyper.! Are you seeing an endocrinologist or a thyroid specialist?
I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease in 2001 and my symptoms were incredibe fatigue and pain all over that felt like my muscles and bones were being pulled apart. When put on the methimazole, the aches and fatigue stopped immediately. After 5 years, however of being on the methimazole, still could not control TSH for correct levels and has thyroid removed.
