Graves disease optic nerve

Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease optic nerve

graves-disease

Avatar n tn I believe the statistic is less than 50% of those who have Graves thyroid disease develop any symptoms of Graves Eye Disease. Each is caused by different sets of antibodies. Some people get eye disease without ever having thyroid problems. And, of those with Graves/thyroid who do develop eye disease, only about 5% of those ever develop serious enough eye problems (bulging, eyelid retraction, double vision, optic nerve issues) to warrant surgery.
Avatar m tn I have Exophthalmos from Graves Disease. I have been having eye pain, sometimes severe. An MRI was done and there is extra-occular muscle enlargement which was determined to be associated with the Graves but I was told it did not appear to be severe enough to be causing the severe pain (pressure around the optic nerve at the annulus of Zinn). When you have extra-occular muscle enlargement can the extraocular muscle swelling VARY throught the day causing pain.
Avatar n tn I have had steroids for my eyes and and tapazole nothing has worked. I have toxic nodoles along with Graves disease. I have changed my diet and tried different things what do you suggest. I'm not sleeping, I have gained most of my weight back with increased heart beat. What can I do.
Avatar f tn t even know if that will make a difference since I already have a damaged optic nerve, I guess what I am wondering is being that the test is to determine a problem to the optic nerve, how do they know if is optic neuritis or optic neuropathy that would make the test abnormal. This is probably a question that is going to be hard to answer. LOL My mind is always going... whether it is normal or not!!
Avatar f tn Optic neuritis is one for of optic neuropathy (which means literally a sick optic nerve). Most cases of optic neuritis including MS do get better, many clear completely. Optic neuropathys due to glaucoma, compressive neuropathies (trauma, tumors), ischemic neuropathies (example temporal arteritis) often do not improve or get worse. I do not claim to be an expert on neurophysiologic testing of the eye but I would never make a diagnosis based in just changes in amplitude and latency of the test.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with lupus, celiac, and Gravesdisease 20 years ago. My lupus is said to be mild now. I maintain a strict gluten free diet, and my thyroid was irradiated. A year ago a parathyroid adenoma was discovered and I had that removed. I have had an MRI, MRV, and MRA of the brain and it was normal. I also had a lumbar puncture but as far as I know, the doctor didn’t test my spinal fluid for MS. He only tested it for protein, glucose, and CSF count and differential.
Avatar n tn ), female, and confused lol. I read something about graves eye disease? could this be it? I think that I do have a thyroid issue (I'm overweight, which is a cause, right?) as indicated by doctors in the past, and I know that plays some role in graves. Just in need of some help, here. Thanks!
415642 tn?1207784582 Sounds like you are developing GED--Graves' Eye Disease--in which your eyes start to hurt b/c of the muslces behind them stiffening up and will eventually make your eyes "bug". It is excruciatingly painful, was for me anyway. You need to talk to your endo about it asap. Mine had me take prednisone for about 2 months. The deciding factor of me doing RAI as soon as I did was to try and stop my eyes and get me off of the steroids.
Avatar n tn Decompression might be needed to decrease pressure on the optic nerve, if the orbital fat and muscle enlargement are compressing the optic nerve and causing visual loss; if there is such severe proptosis that the cornea is being damaged by exposure; for severe disfigurement. If this is a mild cosmetic problem, then decompression is not usually done.
Avatar m tn Last week I went to hospital for eye surgery to remove cataract, the eye specialist check my eye before going to surgery and he diagnosis in his check up that my left eye affected with cataract and glaucoma and also diagnosis my optic nerve has been damage up to 48% in left eye and 29% in right eye. The eye specialist on above diagnosis counseled me that the present available treatment we will unable to recover the damaged optic nerve, only we prevent to further damage.
Avatar f tn Dear maryo777, Orbital pseudotumor is a condition which may cause redness, limited movement of the eye, swelling of the mucous membrane [conjunctiva], protrusion of the eye and sometimes, damage of the optic nerve Orbital pseudotumor is diagnosis of exclusion and could occur with a retained foreign body or infection. Dr. Feldman Sandy T. Feldman, M.D., M.S.
Avatar f tn Bob- Thanks, and with the statement of "consisting with demyelinating process", does he mean, it's possible that its caused from MS.? Mary- I hope these drsfinallydohelp Lol As far as my Graves Disease and Eye Disease, I was dx'd with Ischemic Optic Neuropathy back in 07, however, I did have a change in my vision 6 months following my first eye surgery, and then it got alittle better 6 months later.
279234 tn?1363105249 So at this point, the docs are having a difficult time, (I am assuming) that they are not sure if this is caused by optic neuritis due to ms, or optic neuropathy due to Graves Eye Disease. I definatey think that this could be more evidence for you. My VEP being abnormal, is proving something to my endocrinologist, he is taking me serious now. (not my neuro) The prism takes time to get used to.
Avatar f tn i am 45 years old,my right eye i have damage optic nerve,i hope that optic nerve transplatation...I hope that transplatation can be use...
Avatar f tn I have to see the ye doc every 2 years because my optic nerve is bigger than the other. he says i may develop glaucoma. now i dont have eye insurance so its $140 per appointment. should i keep going? is it likely i will develop glaucoma? im only 24.
Avatar f tn The symptoms of tearing and pain are usually not associated with optic nerve disease. It may be unrelated to your symptoms. Wait to see what the specialist finds. Dr. O.
Avatar f tn when i took birth since i had optic nerve problem when i am doing my 10 th standard i cant see far things so when i have gone through doctor i got to know that i have a sight then i got to know that i can only see with left eye and with right eye only 25% not more than that so doctors said that from child hood i am facing this problem and my total right eye and eye ball is smaller than left eye and my left eye sight is 3.
Avatar f tn It is an abnormal appearance of your optic nerve due to accumulation of material. It usually does not cause any problems. Sometimes there is nerve fiber layer loss and some visual field loss. Dr. O.
Avatar m tn m not sure if this helps at all, but I experience double vision because I have Graves Disease ( thyroid condition) and I also have Graves Eye Disease. The Eye Disease made my eyes swell which caused the double vision. As recommened by michelle, an opthalmologist is whom you should contact. The eyes are so sensitive and if you are experiencing this problem, a call to this type of Doc. is very important.
Avatar f tn Hello all, I've recently been experiencing a round of unusual symptoms that seem to be in the auto immune disorder/MS family - muscle tingling, spasms, joint pain, back pain, etc. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia more than 10 years ago but have not felt anything like this. Last night I woke up with my eye twitching rapidly and double vision for a brief moment. My PCP is running tests, I have a neuro appointment, I have an MRI scheduled for Friday, and she had me see an eye doctor today.
Avatar f tn LOL Bob, one more question?????? If I have optic nerve damage caused from Graves eye disease how do they know the difference between optic neuropathy and optic nueritis and what its caused from to say if it is ms related or not??? I am sorry that I cannot make that sound more clear.
Avatar f tn Devic’s disease is a inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system damaging the myelin, especially of the optic nerve and the spinal cord. Manifests with temporary or permanent blindness with varying degree of paralysis in the upper and lower limbs. Diagnosis is made with the help of MRI and blood work along with neurological examination. Consult a neurologist for complete evaluation. Best.
306245 tn?1244384967 I have a disease called Neurofibromatosis. Some people with this disease have Optic Nerve Tumors.(Optic Glioma). I know that they can be removed without issues, but questions are 1) once you have had a tumor like this removed (I had some sort of eye surgery when I was 4, my parents story changes like you change your underwear about what type of surgery I had done to my eye.
