Avatar f tn Graves Disease is an Autoimmune Disease and usually when one autoimmune disease is found, there is usually a 2nd one found (this one being Diabetes). The Graves and Hyperthyroidism can be treated by either anti-thyroid meds or pernmanant treatment which will eventually stablaise the Diabetes although this is extremely hard if the Diabetes has been undetected for a long time. And something to watch for is ...Metformin can interefer with thyroid medications.
Avatar f tn Here are the facts: the incidence of thyroid diseases in the general population is about 6%. However, the incidence of thyroid diseases in diabetics is about 10.8% suggesting a possible link between the two disorders. It has been thought for some time that thyroid dysfunction may affect diabetes. Thyroid dysfunction (hyperthyroidism) is linked to worsening glycemic control and increased insulin resistence, both strong indicators in pre-diabetes and obvious problems in diabetes.

Avatar m tn Sounds like your girlfriend might have an autoimmune disease called Graves Disease. I'd have to know what blood tests she had in order to know whether she was tested adequately or not.. Graves Disease causes hyperthyroidism, whose primary symptom is weight loss. Another possibility is diabetes, but it would depend on how long she's had the weight loss issue. If it's very long, she'd have other symptoms of diabetes.
Avatar f tn M PCP told me i had graves disease and referred me to an endo. The endo said that all of my symptoms "were in my head and nothing was wrong". A few years go by and I see my PCP again and asked how I have been treating my thyroid problems and I said "I don't have one". He showed me the consult report from the Endo confirming my PCP diagnosis. My question is this, What am I to do now? I have lost about 20 lbs. when i only weighed 110 2years ago and hair loss.
1428646 tn?1330978063 graves disease will attack and organ. the first time I had graves disease it was attacking my heart making my heart beat faster. I was on medication for about 2 years. then it went into remission now it is back. graves disease could attack any organ , graves disease is your immune system attacks your organs not virus or bacteria.
Avatar f tn I have autoimmune pernicious anaemia (rare juvenile form), Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and vitiligo. I handle things far better when i have a diagnosis. ;) About 25% of patients with autoimmune diseases have a tendency to develop additional autoimmune diseases. Three or more autoimmune diseases is known as multiple autoimmune syndrome (MAS). The MAS classifications are helpful if signs of another autoimmune disease emerges.
Avatar n tn He was diagnosed with gastroparesis recently. He has a positive small bowel biopsy, intraepithial lymphocytosis. Graves disease runs in the family, paternal grandmother. Please help! He can't go to school and has to quit his beloved soccer. Thank you.
Avatar f tn Graves' disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In some cases you can have both autoimmune diseases at the same time which is called Hashitoxicosis. Sometimes the labs can be normal as both diseases can mess with the labs. In my case I had subclinical hypo labs with major hyper symptoms due to Graves antibodies.
Avatar f tn The most common forms of autoimmune thyroid disease are Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Gravesdisease. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (also known as chronic thyroiditis) may lead to hypothyroidism, while Graves’ disease is usually associated with hyperthyroidism.
3075809 tn?1355081008 You might want to have your boyfriend get tested for Graves Disease/hyperthyroidism, which causes fast weight loss. Have him get tested for TSH, Free T3 and Free T4, along with antibodies, TSI. Diabetes is another condition that often causes weight loss.
Avatar n tn Graves is an autoimmune disease and unfortunately for life. Controlling whether they raise or suppress is key to beating the symptoms of the disease. If you are on Levo now - your labs must be abnormal and now lean towards hypoT levels. You would feel like cr@p right now with the swinging patterns you have been on. "Once Graves.... always Graves" is the saying here. But I am positive your endo or ???
Avatar m tn It is much ore like what our bodies make. Did you have Graves disease is an autoimmune disease that affects your thyroid as we know. Do you have a positive ANA now that you have had the radiation?
Avatar m tn The antibody confirm/rule out Graves Disease is Thyroid Stimulating Immunonglobulins (TSI). The tests you need to confirm/rule out Hashimoto's are Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOab) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TGab). Both of these can also be present with Graves Disease, but if you don't have TSI antibodies, you don't have Graves. A thyroid ultrasound would also be good as it will determine whether or not you have nodules on your thyroid.
Avatar n tn I have been going to an Endocrinologist for almost 1 year. He has done several ultrasounds showing that I have 5 tumors on my thyroid. I have a biopsy which showed they were benign. I recently had another ultrasound which showed one of the tumors had shrunk but another one appeared.
Avatar m tn This is a patient to patient forum, not a doctor forum. What help do you need? Get the TSI tests for Graves disease to see if that is what is causing this. If not Graves, then a workup on the pituitary gland to make sure there is no pituitary issue causing this. A good endo should be able to help you with this. Make sure the endo specializes in thyroid, not just diabetes. My endo sees 75 percent thyroid patients. Make sure the endo is willing to test and treat FT4/FT3 levels.
Avatar f tn “In some patients, Graves disease represents a part of more extensive autoimmune processes leading to dysfunction of multiple organs (eg, autoimmune polyglandular syndromes). Graves disease is associated with pernicious anemia, vitiligo, diabetes mellitus type 1, autoimmune adrenal insufficiency, systemic sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Sjögren syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus.” I would strongly recommend you to see a heart specialist to adjust the medications.
Avatar f tn Have you been tested for thyroid antibodies to make sure you do, in fact, have Graves disease and are not simply in a hyper phase of Hashimoto's? Both Graves and Hashimoto's are autoimmune. While Graves is always connected with hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's is most often connected with hypothyroidism, however it's not uncommon for one to have periods of hyperthyroidism in the beginning stages. You should ask for thyroid antibody tests.
Avatar n tn If you don't mind. I see you posts starts out as Graves Disease and you are looking for a surgeon? While I would have to do some checking around on this can you post the reason for the removal? - Is it for Graves disease?
Avatar m tn I am a 45 year old female who was diagnosed with Graves Disease in Jan 2006 and have been treated successfully with PTU ever since. My lastest blood work came back with a TSH level of 0.73 mUnit/L (the only test my current endocrinologist will run.) Last week while on vacation, I started noticing my hands and feet going numb. The large toe on my left foot is numb most of the time, and at times painful. I am waking up night with my hands, feet, arms, and legs tingling.
