Avatar m tn Yeah sounds like she could indeed have a thyroid disease. Graves disease in particular starts off overactive, and symptoms are usually ignored or not noticed...for me it was impossible to gain weight, I had way too much energy and difficulty sleeping. When the thyroid gets overworked though the opposite happens and you become underactive, very quick weight gain and extreme tiredness.
3075809 tn?1355081008 You might want to have your boyfriend get tested for Graves Disease/hyperthyroidism, which causes fast weight loss. Have him get tested for TSH, Free T3 and Free T4, along with antibodies, TSI. Diabetes is another condition that often causes weight loss.
Avatar f tn Graves' disease is the name of the autoimmune condition that causes hyperthryoidism. It was first described by a Dr. Graves. It's what causes most hyperthyroidism. If you get the TSI test (simple blood test), they will be able to tell if you have the antibody that indicates Graves' disease. It's good to know what's causing your thyroid to be overactive.

Avatar n tn Can taking to much synthroid cause Graves disease? This discussion is related to Too much synthroid.
Avatar f tn I wasn’t anoerexic just built small and short so weighing 85 lbs then was normal. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in June 2008 and I also have Graves Disease, I now weigh 110 lbs, I gained that 15 lbs within 6 months, that sounds skinny to most people but I used to NOT gain weight no matter how much I ate before I had a thyroid problem so I now exercise and watch what I eat since I can easily gain weight.
Avatar f tn Looks like Graves' disease based on the significant elevation in T3 however to confirm this a TSI blood test or I-123 nuclear uptake would be required.
Avatar n tn I have had steroids for my eyes and and tapazole nothing has worked. I have toxic nodoles along with Graves disease. I have changed my diet and tried different things what do you suggest. I'm not sleeping, I have gained most of my weight back with increased heart beat. What can I do.
Avatar m tn d have to know what blood tests she had in order to know whether she was tested adequately or not.. Graves Disease causes hyperthyroidism, whose primary symptom is weight loss. Another possibility is diabetes, but it would depend on how long she's had the weight loss issue. If it's very long, she'd have other symptoms of diabetes.
Avatar f tn Anxiety and irritability A fine tremor of the hands or fingers Heat sensitivity and an increase in perspiration or warm, moist skin Weight loss, despite normal eating habits Enlargement of the thyroid gland (goiter) Change in menstrual cycles Erectile dysfunction or reduced libido Frequent bowel movements Bulging eyes (Graves' ophthalmopathy) Fatigue Thick, red skin usually on the shins or tops of the feet (Graves' dermopathy) Rapid or irregular heartbeat (palpitations) Sleep disturban
Avatar n tn Has your doctor told you, you have Graves Disease? Yes, your TSH is extremely low and your FT4 is extremely high, indicating that you are hyper, but your antibody tests indicate Hashimoto's. TSI is the definitive test for Graves Disease and I don't see that listed. Have you been put on antithyroid med?
Avatar f tn Those who already were overweight, whose hyperthyroidism was caused by Graves Disease, or who had lost weight prior to diagnosis all had similar amounts of weight gain, which was approximately 5 to 5.5 kg (11 to 12 pounds) over the six months during which they were treated with antithyroid drugs for radioactive iodine. Those who had their thyroid removed gained even more weight, an average of 10 kg (11 pounds).
Avatar n tn The medical community seems to be happy with treating the symptoms and not looking for the causes - big pharma would lose money if many causes for disease were found. The leading thyroid association voice for Dr's is almost invisibly owned by the makers of Synthroid (hypo T4 med). So were srcewed from the start.
877337 tn?1249844450 Graves' disease may present clinically with one of the following characteristic signs: * exophthalmos (protuberance of one or both eyes) * a non-pitting edema (pretibial myxedema), with thickening of the skin usually found on the lower extremities * fatigue, weight loss with increased appetite, and other symptoms of hyperthyroidism * rapid heart beats * muscular weakness The two signs that are truly 'diagnostic' of Graves' disease (i.e.
Avatar f tn The only way you will know is to get your Free T3, Free T4 and TSH checked along with antibody testing for Graves Disease and Hashimoto Disease.
Avatar f tn Lab results, we tend to rely on Free, but as both your T3 and T4 levels are high and the TSH is low, in addition your TPOab is High, this would indicate an auto immune thyroid disease known as Graves, this condition causes your immune system to attack the thyroid and then the thyroid over produces the T4 hormone that your body runs on, it increases you body's metabolism. Some symptoms include Tachycardia (Fast Heart Rate) edgy nervious feelings, anxiety, lower body weight than normal.
199177 tn?1490498534 My husband was diagnosed with graves disease this last week .He sees the endocrinologist Monday is there anybody that can help me understand this and are the partiular questions he needs to be asking the doctor .
Avatar f tn Our findings indicate that sonography has high specificity but low sensitivity in the diagnosis of either Gravesdisease or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. It is therefore not possible to differentiate between these two diseases using sonography alone. Confirmation by laboratory data is also needed." https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/postpartum-thyroiditis/symptoms-causes/syc-20376675 Why didn't the doctor just run a TSI test for Graves'?
Avatar f tn My husband has just recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which we were told, in his case, was caused by Grave's Disease. However, I am very confused because my husband weighs 420 pounds and falls in to the morbidly obese category. Everything I have read says that hyperthyroidism and Grave's Disease causes unintentional weight loss. How is this possible? His blood test results are TSH - 0.008 UIU/ML, Total T3 - 79.67 NG/DL, and his Free T4 is 1.81 NG/DL.
Avatar f tn Everyone is different when it comes to medications and their thyroid disease-though weight loss is more common of Graves' disease, some people gain, just like some people lose weight being hypo. I was on 5 of methimazole myself when diagnosed with Graves', and gained 15lbs. For me, it was much needed-I had lost nearly thirty pounds in just a few short months being un-medicated.
877337 tn?1249844450 I just googled graves disease and weight and came across this link: http://home.rica.net/deecee/weight-control.htm Hope it helps.
Avatar f tn But since Graves treatment, weight has plagued me (along with fatigue, hair loss, vision issues, anxiety/depression at times) but ALWAYS THE DARNED weight!!! Now, new endo says RAI is what she would’ve advised originally...as I’m going to most likely end up hypO and taking synthroid/levo for the rest of my life. Ugh. Anyone manage to get their weight back under control after RAI? Or on synthroid? I’m dreading this! I’m scared of RAI.
