Graves disease causes eye

Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease causes eye

graves-disease

Avatar n tn Question if anyone knows- once Graves eye disease is done is it gone forever? Will the swelling and eye problems come back?
Avatar n tn The eye problems are likely not directly related to your thyroid problems or the replacement hormones you are taking. They sound like they are caused by Graves Eye Disease (also known as Thyroid Eye Disease) which is caused by different anti-bodies than the ones that caused your Graves Thyroid Disease. These antibodies cause a fat-like substance to be deposited in the muscles behind the eyes, which eventually push the eye out of the socket, causing the characteristic stare.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am a 28 year old woman and was diagnosed with graves disease 3 years ago. I have commented o many forums regarding my problem but would like your advice. I was treated with radio active iodine in 2006 and then became hypothyroid, I now take 150mg of levothyroxine daily. I have never suffered from graves opthalmology as far as i'm aware. For the last 6 months I have had a chronic daily headache. This started 3 days after purchasing new glasses.
Avatar n tn I'm so sorry you are going through this. I have graves & thyroid eye disease too. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. If you have active thyroid eye disease, please, do not have any more RAI, it will worsen you eyes. You have a complicated case due to Graves & toxic nodules. The Graves may be treated with the RAI but the toxic nodules can still be excreting thyroid hormone keeping you hyper.! Are you seeing an endocrinologist or a thyroid specialist?
Avatar m tn I have Exophthalmos from Graves Disease. I have been having eye pain, sometimes severe. An MRI was done and there is extra-occular muscle enlargement which was determined to be associated with the Graves but I was told it did not appear to be severe enough to be causing the severe pain (pressure around the optic nerve at the annulus of Zinn). When you have extra-occular muscle enlargement can the extraocular muscle swelling VARY throught the day causing pain.
Avatar f tn I wasn’t anoerexic just built small and short so weighing 85 lbs then was normal. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism in June 2008 and I also have Graves Disease, I now weigh 110 lbs, I gained that 15 lbs within 6 months, that sounds skinny to most people but I used to NOT gain weight no matter how much I ate before I had a thyroid problem so I now exercise and watch what I eat since I can easily gain weight.
Avatar f tn Similarly, sarcoidosis of the thyroid gland may develop in response to an established thyroid disorder including Gravesdisease, nodular goiter, and thyroid cancer. Patients with Gravesdisease may also have concomitant conditions of sarcoidosis affecting the lungs. Patients with systemic sarcoidosis may also develop sarcoid lesions in various organs including the thyroid gland.
666116 tn?1278282694 I am personally going to have eye surgery for my graves disease in two weeks , and plastic surgery to fix the lower eye lid.
1470552 tn?1300605907 Hey! I have that same thing and have been told it is caused by very dry eyes. Sometimes you are so accustomed to the dry eyes that you think it is normal. My eyes still will water, but from the outside not the tearducts. Another symptom of dry eye. The needle sticking villians are relentless. You can get some OTC moisture drops. Get good ones. Or talk to your eye doc about Restasis.
Avatar n tn This is the third question you have asked about the same problem. 1. besides thyroid eye disease (TED) and space occupying tumors the next most common problem would be orbital inflammatory 'pseudo-tumor' 2. No the eye muscles don't get inflammed without a cause. 3. No the eye only gets larger in infants and children. In adults the sclera is rigid and won't enlarge like the soft, rubber like sclera of youth.
Avatar n tn The medical community seems to be happy with treating the symptoms and not looking for the causes - big pharma would lose money if many causes for disease were found. The leading thyroid association voice for Dr's is almost invisibly owned by the makers of Synthroid (hypo T4 med). So were srcewed from the start.
Avatar n tn I have been going to an Endocrinologist for almost 1 year. He has done several ultrasounds showing that I have 5 tumors on my thyroid. I have a biopsy which showed they were benign. I recently had another ultrasound which showed one of the tumors had shrunk but another one appeared.
Avatar n tn My uncle has Grave's disease. It's an autoimmune disease that unfortunately always plagues you in one shape or another even after the radiated iodine treatment. Since thyroid disease runs in my family, and I have borderline hyperthyroid tendencies, I always keep an eye on the thyroid board on MedHelp. The folks there are very knowledgeable. You may want to pop in there for some advice as well. Both diseases (FM and Graves symptoms overlap) Make sure you stop back in both places.
Avatar m tn The most common cause of this condition is related to the thyroid, sometimes called graves disease or thyroid eye disease. Other causes are low or high flow cavernous fistulas, cancer in the eye socket, orbital inflammatory disease and other very rare causes. Sometimes temporary eye muscle paralysis problems can cause this problem too. Again, thyroid disease is the most common cause. You need to seek the care of an Eye MD (ophthalmologist).
Avatar f tn On the other hand sometimes its that the other eye lid is too low (ptosis) and there are may causes of that. You would need to see a neuro-ophthalmologist or oculoplastic surgeon to work through the various causes and if appropriate treatment.
Avatar n tn Usually, surgery is the preferable option if someone has Graves thyroid disease (because RAI can sometimes make eye disease worse if already present). Graves Eye Disease is caused by different antibodies than the thyroid disease. They are related, but having one doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the other.
Avatar m tn Low tsh can be a sign of Graves Disease, which causes eye problems and goiters like you are describing.
Avatar n tn You might want to ask your doctor to test for Graves Disease, which is an autoimmune disease that causes over-activity of the thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism). Graves disease can cause bulging of the eyes.
