Avatar f tn , if the thyroid is responding to the meds, but the eyes are still bulging, is it necessary to remove the thyroid before surgery of the eyes can be done? Is there anything that can be done for bulging eyes besides surgery?
Avatar f tn Treatment for correction of the exophthalmos (bulging eyes) for Graves disease can be accomplished by removing the excess fatty tissue about the eyes. This should be a permanent solution for this problem.
Avatar n tn I believe the statistic is less than 50% of those who have Graves thyroid disease develop any symptoms of Graves Eye Disease. Each is caused by different sets of antibodies. Some people get eye disease without ever having thyroid problems. And, of those with Graves/thyroid who do develop eye disease, only about 5% of those ever develop serious enough eye problems (bulging, eyelid retraction, double vision, optic nerve issues) to warrant surgery.
Avatar f tn If she has Graves, I do believe surgery will eventually be necessary. The eyes could improve, but it is not guaranteed. The Thyroid Solution, by Ridha Arem, dedicates an entire chapter to thyroid eye disease. He talks about the different options, such as corticosteroids, and different types of surgery. One suggestion he made was to find an ophthalmologist with expertise in the field. For my dryness, my eye doctor gave me GenTeal to use at night and Systane during the day.
Avatar f tn I just was diagnosed with graves. Eyes not bulging yet but swollen eyelids. You mention there is something that can be done before it happens what should I do?
415642 tn?1207784582 I am on medication for Graves Disease and now my eyes have headed for the worse . I think it is called Thyroid Eye Disease ? May be wrong on that. I posted the other night , but I had another question for the experts and people who have already been through this .. Does medication cure this ? Or is this going to get worse as it goes on ? My eyes are really red , running water, start to close as the sun hits them, as well as the starring thing is going on .
1314073 tn?1282841674 Not eveyrone gets thyroid storms, or bulging eyes (thyroid eye disease). Everyone is different. I have TED, it is not that bad. I may have to have the surgery, but not for in how I look, but because the pressure is causing me headaches, & eye pain in the sockets. I have looked like this for the past 16yrs. I don't know if my eyes became like this due to RAI, or because I went untreated & undiagnosed (kept telling me I was depressed) for 6 months with severe hyper/grave symptoms.
Avatar n tn I have had steroids for my eyes and and tapazole nothing has worked. I have toxic nodoles along with Graves disease. I have changed my diet and tried different things what do you suggest. I'm not sleeping, I have gained most of my weight back with increased heart beat. What can I do.
Avatar m tn They have recommended me to use the eye drops like artificial tears during day and refresh pm ointment for the night and I am using them. Is there a way that I can reduce the bulging eyes and get my eyes normal without surgery?? Also, Since november 2010 my thyroid conditions have changed and I now have hypothyroid. Ever since the transformation of thyroid levels I have gained almost like 20 pounds of weight with in a month's time.
Avatar f tn Well I am a 22 year old female, 5'0 ft who used to weigh 85 lbs back in 2007 before I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. I wasn’t anoerexic just built small and short so weighing 85 lbs then was normal.
Avatar n tn My interenist suspected Graves, ergo the reason for the tests. My concern is that I have some of the classic symptoms of Graves, but my test results show me to be in the normal range. I'm wondering if others have had their values fall in the normal range but second level testing (e.g., radioactive iodine test) revealed a problem.
Avatar f tn It is very common to have Graves of the eyes if you have Graves Thyroid disease. My doctor told me that he would treat me with prednisone to get the swelling behind my eyes down and last resort would be surgery. You probably need to research an eye doctor that specializes in Graves. Where do you live? My doctor is at Rush Hospital in Chicago.
Avatar m tn Hello, I had hyperthyroid a couple of years back and been treated with radio active iodine medication in september 2010. And looking at my swolen eyes the doctor said I have graves disease. Since november 2010 my thyroid conditions have changed and I now have hypothyroid. Ever since the transformation of thyroid levels I have gained almost like 20 pounds of weight. Along with that I was having swollen temples when the weather is cold, if i eat anything hard or if i get a bit excited.
Avatar f tn My thryoid is now in the normal range. I have hashimoto and graves disease. If you thyroid is out of wack as it gets to normal it will get better. There is a thyroid eye disease and an othomologist can tell you if you have that. I don't have it. I'm sure others on this list will know more than me. This is the place to get some answers and compassion.
Avatar f tn m also going for a neuro opthamalogist consult. My eye lids are puffy but no bulging yet. Have you heard how the bulging eyes start are swollen a symptom. The dr measured my eyes today as a baseline. Also took blood work which I have to repeat in 4 weeks. Thanks again for responding!
Avatar f tn I had orbital decompression on both eyes a little over two years ago. Best thing I ever did for myself. Graves eye disease is a long road, and there are no quick fixes. However, the surgery has made a world of difference for me. I know that isn't an option for you right now. I wouldn't wish GED on my worst enemy, so I fee for you. It takes a lot of patience to endure this disease. Some days, it is overwhelming and you just want it to go away. I wish you the best.
534194 tn?1213416842 I have Graves' eye disease, not bulging eyes. Mine is swollen eyelids. My vision is blurry and it has worsened over the course of three years. My thyroid eye specialist said that there is a thickening of my muscles behind the eyes. I get double vision and extreme sensitivity to light. If I'm in the sun too long, even with sunglasses, I see bright white spots. I'm wondering if anyone has the same Graves' eye disease I did, swollen eyelids and what the prognosis was?
Avatar f tn I have recently started experiencing problems with my eyes (bulging, discomfort, and social isolation) and am going to have to have decompression surgery. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good MD in NC that performs this orbital decompression surgery...I am really nervous and want everything to go good so that I can get back to being normal as soon as possible. THANKS!
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Graves Disease a few months after the sudden loss of my oldest daughter. This was in Nov. of 2004. I have since had 4 eye operations to try and aid with the bulging eyes. They do appear somewhat improved. Not quite so bulgy, but what makes my life miserable is the constant tearing and irritation. I have tried several different kinds of drops without any satisfaction. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, is there any magic treatment out there that will help.??
Avatar f tn For me my symptoms were, rapid heart rate, insomnia, blood surgar levels real high, high potassium, muscle cramps, eyes bulging, fever, diaherra, sweats. Once my I had my TT I still hit another storm, but after that my body settled down & never had them again.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had eye surgery for Thyroid eye disease from Graves? My eyes are still bulging after a year on meds and while my eye doctor says it's not that bad, I am tired of children trying to engage me in staring contests and looking surprised in every photo. I don't look like myself and want help. Can anyone provide input who has had eyelid surgery? Good or bad...I just want to learn more.
558632 tn?1303471125 You probably should be seen by an ophthalmologist, preferably one who specializes in Graves Eye Disease. I have heard the earlier one is seen by an eye doc, the more optimal the outcome in terms of getting things as close to "normal" as possible. I believe there are antibodies that can be tested for with a blood test that indicate the presence, or at least the likelihood, of GED. I had the eye problems before I even knew I had Graves, and assumed they were allergies.
Avatar n tn t think I have had the bug eyes that I read about with Graves. This has happened periodically and at first I thought it was my contacts but I did not have them in the night before. I know this condition is connected with Graves but is there any treatment? I am miserable.
Avatar n tn i am 38 years old female with a hypothyriod buth has taking it out through surgry since 6 mnths age but the issue is that my eyes still bulging out and bluring more espertially in the morning hours.
Avatar n tn I have Graves & Graves Eye Disease & your symptoms sound exactly like mine when my disease started. You need to see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. After the exam he will order a cat scan of your eyes to see if there is any muscle enlargement behind your eye. I had more prominent orbital edema than buldging at first but that along with eye fatigue, tearing & eye dryness are some of the first symptoms. The endrocrinologist should know that.
Avatar n tn s being confirmed with her antibodies sky high, they might want to also get an uptake study to see if the gland has increased uptake or not, this will tell if her hyperthyroidism is Graves or what we call Hashitoxicosis, both caused by antibodies but Hashitoxicosis tends to improve and may not need as aggressive treatment. The bulging eyes tell me more that this is Graves though and I bet you are in excellent endocrinology hands.
