Common Questions and Answers about Graves disease and prednisone

Avatar f tn I do not have Graves but I did have RAI following my thyroidectomy for cancer and I was given prednisone to help with inflamation in my salivary glands and gums. Only, I wasn't very smart and I didn't take it after the 2nd day because it made me feel even worse than I already did. I should have taken it though, I ended up having issues that could have been prevented. Don't know if this helps but I thought I'd throw it out there.
Avatar f tn Last year I was diagnosed with Graves disease and had a radioactive ablation done in April. Sometime around March of 2009, my eyelids became puffy and my eyes were usually watery. I called my Endocrinologist and asked if this was related to my thyroid and she sugg. I visit my Primary Care Dr. I did and he followed an allergy path. I finally went to an allergist who said that allergies may be playing a role, it was not the primary cause.
Avatar n tn Hi, Dr. Lupo, I am going to have to do RAI treatment for Graves disease. My question is, how much prednisone (and for how long) do you prescribe before and after treatment. Do you recommend prednisone for everyone, or only for those with eye disease? My endo said that he thinks the risk of prednisone is greater than the risk of eye disease and doesn't want to prescribe it. I do not feel comfortable with that statement, as eye disease seems much worse to me than short term prednisone.
Avatar f tn Hi. I am hoping someone can help me. I found out that I have Graves Disease in May of 2009. I have all the symptoms and I am currently looking for the best procedure for me. I came down with a rash on my back a few months ago. It is an open rash. Now it has spread to my chin and arms. Does anyone know what it can be? I am not on any meds for the Thyroid. It almost looks like Chicken Pox??
Avatar f tn I have not seen anything written about a fixed percentage of eye complications from RAI, but have read on the doctor forum that is connected. And, my own endo advised against RAI for me (I also have Graves Eye Disease) because he was concerned it would make an already bad situation worse. It is likely that the Tapazole was controlling your thyroid levels which was helping with your eyes. It probably wasn't the Tapazole itself that was helping your eye condition.
Avatar m tn It is much ore like what our bodies make. Did you have Graves disease is an autoimmune disease that affects your thyroid as we know. Do you have a positive ANA now that you have had the radiation?
Avatar n tn The first physician recommends thyroid scan and uptake and then the iodine treatment, with a prednisone taper for my eyes prior. He says I am slightly anemic so I should bypass the antithyroid medication. The other physician is against doing the thyroid scan and uptake and recommends going directly to antithyroid medication and prednisone for the eyes. What do you think is the best route.
542445 tn?1215132963 When you say "adrenal testing" exactly what tests are you referring to? My story is EXACTLY the same as PaintingCate's but I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis, pituitary adenoma, connective tissue disease (still looking for exact types), total body edema (or inflammation). My skin is hot to the touch but rarely do I have a low grade fever. I also have Barrett's esophagus and gastritis in the antrum.
Avatar f tn Dr. Lupo , is there anything that will help this disorder. I have Graves Disease , took RAI in Oct of 08 then a few months later my eyes began swelling and tearing. I have been told there is nothing that can be done. My Eye Doctor says it is a unpredictable disease and will see me again in two months. Is there anything I can do at home , other than tear drops and wait? My Blood work showed TSH at 0.0 and my Free T4 at 1.85 . I know this means I am still Hyper. What should normal levels be?
Avatar f tn T4 are all normal maybe its not Graves and if it is Graves he would not know how to treat it--because the goal is to get the TSH & T4 within normal range. Since mine are already normal any medication will probably take them out of the normal range. Any similar experiences? Any advice?
Avatar f tn I finnaly got in to the Endocrinologist i was told i have graves disease i was given the option to do pill therapy or I-131 i talk with both my sisters (both have graves) both did the pill therapy with no sucsess so i decided to do the radioiodine treatment will i have to do the iodine tretment again? i was given a very low dose both my sisters say thier dose was much higher. is it also normal to be put on Prednisone after the treatment?
Avatar n tn If you have hyperthyroidism from Graves disease, and you are on medication, will the medication stop the effects? Can bulging eyes ever go back to normal? Does anybody know or have first-hand experience. My daughter was diagnosed with Graves. Her period had stopped, which had brought her to seek medical help, in the first place. She has always been thin. She has been on meds for about four weeks. Eyes are starting to bulge. Oddly, she's putting on weight. Needless to say.
Avatar f tn I came back to being allergic to nothing. We also did a blood tests for my thyroid, cancer, graves disease, and various other diseases. My thyroid levels came back normal but my auto antibodies came back high, over 400. The allergist said that its something we'll just have to monitor, watch my levels, and do 'a step by step' with drugs. Right now she has me on Allegra in the morning, Montelukast Sodium 10mg in the afternoon, and Zyrtec at night. It seems to keep the hives at bay.
Avatar n tn I have graves disease symptoms i feel sick at night and i cant sleep . what about u ?
Avatar f tn Earlier this week my doc called and said that I have Graves disease. I have had extreme tiredness for the last year and vision problems for at least six months. I got an appointment with an endo doc but it's a month away. How long after starting treatment do the tiredness and vision problems go away? Or do they go away? It is hard for my eyes to focus when I read and they are very sensitive to light. I have only five months left of college and I would like to have my vision back.
1428646 tn?1330978063 graves disease will attack and organ. the first time I had graves disease it was attacking my heart making my heart beat faster. I was on medication for about 2 years. then it went into remission now it is back. graves disease could attack any organ , graves disease is your immune system attacks your organs not virus or bacteria.
415642 tn?1207784582 Sounds like you are developing GED--Graves' Eye Disease--in which your eyes start to hurt b/c of the muslces behind them stiffening up and will eventually make your eyes "bug". It is excruciatingly painful, was for me anyway. You need to talk to your endo about it asap. Mine had me take prednisone for about 2 months. The deciding factor of me doing RAI as soon as I did was to try and stop my eyes and get me off of the steroids.
Avatar n tn The endroconologist gave her methimazole and took blood work b4 and after taking it and she said it was lowing her blood presssure etc and it wasnt working for her after taking it a couple months at i think 5mg a day. The endrocologist said there are only 2 prescriptions she can give my mom and the 2nd one will not do much either. To go to the NY Eye Infirmatory and they will take care of her. So its alot of back and forth! What can we do who can she see if order to correct this thyroid?
785188 tn?1279928405 I went to an eye specialist that my endocronologist recommended and he thinks I have Graves of the eyes and I am going for a CT this Saturday. He said that I would have to stop smoking (cause this makes it worse) and I would have to be on prednisone. I do not want to be on a steroid that is going to make me gain a ton of weight. I am 5"1 and about 124lbs - is there any other solution to this problem besides the steroid?
Avatar f tn I have read about radiation therapy for Graves eye disease, but did not have it. I asked my eye doctor about it and he didn't think it had much effect, but then, he's a surgeon and inclined to cut. The radiation is supposed to shrink the swollen tissue behind the eyes that causes the bulging. I had orbital decompression on both eyes a little over two years ago. Best thing I ever did for myself. Graves eye disease is a long road, and there are no quick fixes.
Avatar f tn You need a second opinion. Based on what you describe, you have autoimmune thyroid disease with markers for Graves' (TSI) and the other common antibodies (TPO and Tg) that are usually associated with hashimoto's. Graves' and Hashi should be considered as entities on two ends of a spectrum, not two completely different diseases. This may cause fluctuating thyroid function to hypo and hyper and back but this is not common.
