seizure

Avatar m tn Grand mal seizure is the most common kind of seizure in dogs. This could cause your dog to lose consciousness and convulse. Here are the most common of seizure in dogs: Eating poison Liver disease Low or high blood sugar Kidney disease Electrolyte problems Anemia Head injury Encephalitis Strokes Brain cancer These are what you should do when your dog is having seizure. * Try to stay calm. Distance your dog from anything that could hurt him, do it gently.
Avatar m tn Those are basically what are considered to be grand mal seizures. Petite mal seizures can be anything from a twitching of the head to a state of catatonia for a brief time, which sounds more or less like what your girl had. Please let us know what the vet says when you do get to take her in. Good luck to you! It's very scary when something is wrong with one of our furkids and we don't know what it is.
6534561 tn?1382226779 I saw one petit mal seizure that day but no grand mal seizures for a week. Incidentally, I brought my mom home after a brief stay at hospice to die on July 1. She had lived with me for the past 2 1/2 yrs and had been on oxygen every now and then. Nat resumed grand mal seizures the day after mom came back home. She died a few days later. A few days after that, Nat stopped having seizures.
Avatar m tn We have an 8 year old Lab/Shepard mix who had a grand mal seizure in the middle of the night. The Vet wanted to wait to start any med's to see if the seizure was from a toxin or something more serious. Six weeks later he had another seizure, this time we'd done our research and used a medical grade essential oil during the seizure which brought him out of the seizure quickly.
Avatar n tn If your vet suspects a brain tumor, essential oils are probably not going to be of much help depending on how large the tumor is and what part of the brain it is located in. If it is malignant and she is already having grand mal cluster seizures, it's kind of doubtful that even medication will help much at this point. If it's a benign tumor, however, and it can be removed, then that would be the way to go and then determine which treatment would be best afterward.
Avatar f tn I have double vision and blurred vision at times, I don't know why. I have epilepsy (absence and grand mal seizures) but this doesn't seem like a absence seizure as I am still aware when it is happening. I can only see clearly when I close one eye... Help and advice please.
Avatar m tn My golden who turns 14 in two days had a grand mal seizure at the beginning of November, then was seizure-free until the beginning of February. She had three seizures over a 72-hour period so the vet put her on phenobarbital, 75mg twice a day.

Avatar n tn In her late teenage years she had absent seizures about once every 1 to 2 months. Then in 2007 she had a grand mal seizure due to some of the scar tissue had broken off or moved.. The Dr started her on 300 mg of trileptal. Then Aug 2008 she had another grand mal seizure. So, they up the meds to 900 mg. Her absent seizures went completely away. But, she had another seizure in Feb 2009. So, they up the meds to 1200mg.
11639155 tn?1420062415 m breathing deeply into the mask, when I black out. Apparently I had my first Grand Mal seizure and the dentist switches back to oxygen when I come back. I asked my mom what happened and she answered that I had a Grand Mal. So we tried again with the Nitrous Oxide only after a good 10 minutes of oxygen and I blacked out again. This time the Dentist was quicker to switch back to oxygen and woke back up from the second Grand Mal seizure.
Avatar f tn I used to be a general nurse and can tell you that fits in dogs follow a pattern very similar to humans in that there is a stage after the grand mal that lasts around one hour when the patient appears concious, but actually is not (in their own mind). During this stage, whether human or dog they can exhibit very bizarre or agressive behavior; actually it's normal, although some patients are calm.
Avatar n tn Eight months ago I suffered a Grand Mal Seizure. It was my first one and I have no family history of seizures. I find that I am now dealing with memory loss. I am frustrated because my memory was pretty sharp prior to the seizure. My doctor never really said that I'd experience this and I was wondering if anyone else is dealing with this as well. I'm not on any type of meds. for seizures or anything else.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know if a dog (like a human) is aware when having a grand mal seizure?
452187 tn?1205709129 My 2 1/2 year old suffered a grand mal seizure last Sunday. He has never had anything like that happen before, and there was no warning. We went to the ER and were told it was a "febrile" seizure (his temp was 102.4). They administered Motrin and Tylenol and he started feeling better. He was released, and as we were walking out of the ER (literally) he started seizing again. This was about 3-hours after the first episode.
551505 tn?1215208461 Hello and welcome to the Dogs community! No, dogs aren't supposed to have seizures. In younger dogs, say 4 and under, the cause is usually idiopathic. That means there's not any clear reason like a tumor or other lesion in the brain causing the seizures. In senior dogs, it's more likely that there is a growth of some kind, but not always. Most seizures can be well controlled with phenobarbitol and/or other medications.

Avatar m tn My 6 year old had a grand mal seizure for the first time ever two weeks ago. She ended up at the Children’s Medical Hospital in Dallas. All test game back good, except for the EEG, but it was only slightly abnormal. Last weekend, she fell while playing and hit her head on the table. She was very upset (unusual for her) and started having shaking seizures several hours later that lasted 5-20 seconds. She throw up with each seizure. She probable had about 10 of these over 3-4 hours.
Avatar f tn 30 y.o. woman, had a grand mal seizure for unknown reasons. EEG and MRI looked normal, EXCEPT for white spots in pituitary gland. One pregnancy 5 years ago. Avatar f tn Nathan was started on a diet for Seizure control...Ketogenic Diet. He had his last grand mal seizure the 3 day on the diet. His muscle and drop seizures ended 2 months later completely, but we noticed they were less harsh with each one he had til they just stopped." - excerpt from KetoGenic Diet for Seizures.
Avatar f tn A grand mal seizure is often followed by a period of confusion and delirium for a few days. You doctor is right in saying that you must not drive because you may have such seizures again. You should not drive unless you are free from seizures for a period of 6 months after taking treatment. Please take proper treatment. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
494976 tn?1302710701 When I came to I was disorientated and had been incontinent, the Nurse said I had been having jerking movements in my arms and she thought it may have been a seizure. I was worn out for the rest of the day. Did not have the LP. In the past I have passed out and been incontinent. Once there was no apparent reason but that was years ago when I was 18. I am now 30. I don't know If there were any jerking movements on these but will look into it and ask the people who were around at the time.
Avatar m tn Hi everyone. My father, 5 years ago after coming out of a coma, developed a brain bleed. It's caused him to have Grand Mal seizures. He's taking a drug to control it right now, and so far he hasn't had a seizure in almost 3 years. The drug he's on is weakened by alcohol ( if that's correct ) which when he drinks causes the medication to weaken and causing him to have a seizure.
Avatar m tn Finally one day at work I had a grand mal seizure witnessed by several co-workers. I went to the ER and it was confirmed I had a grand mal seizure. My neurologist put me on Lamactal and said there isn't always a reason people have seizures - does this mean it could be epilepsy? I now have short term memory loss and am in my final 30-day PIP plan for poor performance at my job due to my memory loss. I fear I'll lose any job I obtain because of my medical condition.
Avatar n tn Since I have had that I suffer from Grand Mal Seizures due to scar tissue. Is this something that is common? Also after my seizures I am confused as to the year and even not remembering people in my family. On one occasion this has lasted 2 hours. I am not concerned about it but my family is very concerned about it. Any help or advice I can get would be of great help.
Avatar n tn I am a 43 healthy female. I had a gran mal seizure in 2004 where I fell backwards stiff as a board and cracked my head open on concrete. I lost all consciousness and could not tell where I was when I came to. I do not remember falling. God blessed me that day as I was about to drive my husband and 2 children home from vacation from San Antonio to Houston. I could have killed them and another driver.
Avatar f tn Deep deep depression and grief. On Oct 20th I experienced my 1st grand mal seizure. Last week I had 2 more 7 days apart. EEG came back normal, MRI showed what could be scarring on the left side of my brain. DR said retest in 3 months to see if its a tumor. He says I have epilepsy,I disagree. Is it possible this is caused from severe trauma and grief? Each seizure I have had has been shortly after I awake in the morning and before I eat breakfast.
Avatar m tn There is an excellent thread regarding phenobarbital dosing and side effects in dogs having seizure activity. My family is in a similar situation, our 9 year old coon hound in excellent health had 3 grand mal seizures in less than 24 hrs. We had a basic work up done at the vet after the first seizure which essentially came back normal. We have started her on phenobarb and prednisone, but I am glad I checked out the thread b/c I did not know the medication side effects were so profound...
