Not all CML's are candidate for Gleevec. Only those who tested positive for the philadelphia chromosome or the bcr-abl gene would be candidates to receive gleevec.
I was diagnosed with CML and given Gleevec 400 ml. After taking gleevec for 2 weeks doctor took additional blood test. My WBC dropped from 36.5 to 7.1 and all other blood counts came down to normal range. I'm wondering if gleevec could give such fast hematological response or I was possibly misdiagnosed originally. I don't and didn't have any symptoms, my spleen and liver weren't enlarged, no enlarged lymph. Should I get second opinion asap? Please, help me.
Hi, I don't know the answer -- but since both CML and Gleevec toxicity produce anemia because of marrow suppression, maybe it's not possible to tell the difference. E.g., both would show a low reticulocyte count.

Response to imatinib (gleevec) can be dramatic just like what you experienced. Myelosuppression with neutropenia (decrease in neutrophils) and thrombocytopenia (decrease in platelet count) can be a side effect of treatment. Usually, discontinuation of drug intake is advised until the blood counts increase. You should have your white blood cell count repeated after 1-2 weeks and see if it already improves. You should report to your doctor if you experience any symptoms like fever.
I was diagnosed last year and was immediatley put on gleevec 400mg/day.At my last consult my metabolic stats had risen,hence blood tests to determine if the gleevec is no longer working.I am still in firstphase and wonder what my options are if the gleevec is no longer an option.Amin pretty good form,just very tired and a lot of bone pain.

I have CML and was treated with Gleevec for 4 years and achieved remission. I have for the past several months been experiencing sudden onset of weakness which last for hours, to days. My blood pressure which has remained under control for several years with atenolol has been running 145/105 and higher for the past three to four months. I have a feeling of fullness in my stomach, and I have sporatic episodes of mild coughing, this occurs maybe once a week.
He has tried Zofran, Compazene, Reglen and now a scopalomine patch. None of these have worked for him. Needless to say, he is now depressed and sleeps all the time. Is there anything else out there that can help with nausea? We wonder about the medical marijuana, but don't know if that's an option for him. What about seeing a naturopath? Any suggestions?
I should mention that I have CML but it has been in remission for the last two years and I am no longer taking Gleevec.
I am scheduled to be looked at by a group that kills the nerve endings in the heart that causes AF but there is an 18 month waiting period.
My question is how many times can I be cardioverted and what is the downside of having it so often?
There is no genetic basis for the CML therefore she was not put on Gleevec. She is on Hydrea to keep the wbc count down to a more normal level. I think the only thing that led to the CML diagnosis was the extremely high wbc with no sign of infection or other cancer. Mayo did the same blood tests as the hometown doctor, as well as the lab in Iowa City. I would like them to run other tests but havent a clue what to ask for.
Here is what Wikipedia has to say, and it is a daunting list that they note may be incomplete. It is quite a long list, but I don't see amoxicillin on it. To be certain, I would talk to the pharmacist.
For all of you out there that are just lurking just starting to withdraw or the ones interested in my updates. Here they are: I am wrong of my time I am actually at day 5 not 4 as I said previously I guess I would rather be mistaken that way than advancing the clean time I have. Anyways I still feel like hell warmed over. I do know however that this is not permanent unless I chose to go back to using again. My ahnds are not as shaky I am nauseated and cannot eat for my life.
I am using furniture already in my guest room (soon to be baby room), so I just have to decorate. My mom is making curtains and I need to go on an IKEA run for organizational stuff for the closet and meatballs lol. I'm getting a used crib from my sister-in-law so I'm slowly getting there.

Hello,over time cravings do seem to be less frequent and possibly not as strong,having said that a very important part of managing this disease is for you to plan for and tackle each time one occur.Which will also mean cutting of all sources.In the meantime congrats on reclaimng your life,just take care of your body and hour by hour you will start to feel the benefits.It is so worth it living opiate free.
