Gabapentin withdrawal seizures

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin withdrawal seizures

neurontin

Avatar m tn For gabapentin, the person who fails to decrease dosage over time risks having seizures - even if they never had them before. The decreasing dosage should be prescribed by your doctor just as he was the one to determine your initial dosing schedule and any increases along the way.
Avatar f tn I asked the pharmacist if there could be something of a withdrawal problem with the med, other than increased risk of seizures. He said that he didn't think my pain was a withdrawal symptom, more likely that I was experiencing the pain the med had been blocking. Not sure what I believe. I haven't noticed any mood swings and I rarely miss a dose because I just don't want to go through that if I can help it.
6937315 tn?1386287618 Seriously worst withdrawal on the planet. I'm almost on my second week since last dose and still in full physical withdrawal. Use at your own risk. Don't let the "non-narcotic" label fool you it's very mentally and physically addicting. I feel like I need to warn people. This is just ridiculous that I was never warned about this.
Avatar m tn Most of the individuals described in these reports had a history of poly-substance abuse or used Gabapentin to relieve symptoms of withdrawal from other substances. When prescribing Gabapentin carefully evaluate patients for a history of drug abuse and observe them for signs and symptoms of Gabapentin misuse or abuse (e.g. development of tolerance, self-dose escalation, and drug-seeking behavior).
Avatar m tn ve heard that neurontin or gabapentin is great for stopping the nerve pain associated with withdrawal. Has anyone had experience with this?
Avatar f tn I have run out of my medication a few times and have noticed I dont go through the withdrawal symprtoms with the gabapentin I am also able to sleep. I will probably get my last presription of painkillers when I go through my surgery tues which is an extremely painful surgery. It's an abdominal incsionary hernia recurruence. This is my third repair. I will get back to you about the withdrawls I go through with the painkillers and gabapentin. It all sound like loads of fun fun fun.
Avatar n tn You must not stop taking gabapentin even if you experience side effects like unusual changes in behavior or mood. If you suddenly stop taking gabapentin, you may experience withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, nausea. Your doctor would decrease the dose gradually over at least one week. Certain side effects, are unsteadiness, back or joint pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches, rarely difficulty swallowing or breathing etc.
Avatar f tn t wanna experience withdrawal symptoms because it could result in seizures and a lot of anxiety. Adding up Zoloft could result in even more anxiety and brain shivers/brain zaps but they can also happen on benzodiazepine withdrawals so looks like you should not stop all those meds cold turkey. Go back to your doctor and make a withdrawal schedule with your doctors seems like the best idea if you want to stop those meds but I might add that perhaps you didn't find a med that suits you.
Avatar m tn This is something rehab facilities do -- cold turkey. But cold turkey on benzos can cause seizures, so this is clearly malpractice. Benzos are considered by addiction specialists to be the hardest as to prolonged withdrawals -- but probably only because they don't technically define antidepressants as addictive -- so I would get on the horn with everyone you can think of -- your psychiatrist, the rehab facility, whoever -- and if it comes to it threaten malpractice.
Avatar f tn Hi. I'm wondering if it is safe for me to take Gabapentin for withdrawal symptoms from methadone? I read somewhere that the gaba is sometimes prescribed for that. I have never taken it before in my life and got a hold of a few 300mg capsules the other day. I have been into opiates off and on for about 8 years, getting pretty bad into them this past year. I think it is alot mental with me though. I started off on Perc 5's and 10's, graduating to oxy 30's about a year ago.
Avatar n tn i have been on neurontin for about 2 years. it can be used to treat nerve pain, and of course it's a seizure medication. It does work, however give it a bit to get into your system. Also, you may have to adjust your dosage depending on your tolerance to it. I was taking 600's twice a day, and it will make you dizzy, and not so much out of it, but a bit slow to react. however, everyone is different. Once they lowered my dose to 300, I was quite content on it.
4544656 tn?1371593548 s definitely gabapentin withdrawal. Gabapentin can cause withdrawals like benzos or alcohol. It doesnt happen to everyone, but it can happen. When I feel the withdrawals, if I take a dose of gaba, I'm fine 20 minutes later. I was hoping to hear how others deal with it. I'm down to 200 mgs! Slowly, but surely I'll get there.
1745135 tn?1318224873 i am comming off of oxycodone (supodol) and gabapentin i am looking for tips to get through these next few days anything would be appreciated !

Avatar n tn I had a 48-hour EEG a couple of weeks after quitting the gabapentin and there were no spikes--a few slow waves, but I have had no partial seizures, no neurological events at all in the intervening four years--the epilepsy has gone. I suspect the epilepsy was the result of an undiagnosed wheat allergy. There's something called gluten ataxia, in which lesions in the brain cause physical jerkiness, and there were those white spots on my brain MRIs . . .
Avatar f tn Has anyone expierence swelling of the face with gabapentin? I know it can be a side effect. My question is; Is this an allergic reaction or is the dosage too much? Actually my face feels stiff at times and cheeks get sore. If it is the gabapentin, what would be the alternative? Thank you med help family........
Avatar f tn There is one thing I tried after researching on the internet. Gabapentin (Neurontin) used for fibromyalgia pain. It helped calm me down, helped me to sleep at night (more so than any benzo). You could probably talk to your doctor about it. Some will prescribe it and some will not. And I have heard that it is a hit or miss. Some say that they had great luck with it and others it did nothing. I took 300mgs 3x day. It took away alot of my withdrawal symptoms. Not a miracle pilll but sure helped me.
Avatar n tn He went through withdrawal seizures the whole time he was hospitalized. That sounded so cruel to me for a hospital to do something like that when he was already in the hospital for some other reason. This withdrawal only extended his misery and his hospital stay. I really don't understand why hospitals don't listen, but in my own case they wouldn't listen about my being gluten intolerant when I was hospitalized the last time either.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry, but I can't see how gabapentin will help at all with withdrawal symptoms. The molecules are completely different and I don't think they even use the same receptors in brain. I'm not familiar with the post you're referring to, but the gabapentin was probably prescribed to deal with pain rather than withdrawal symptoms. An old alpha blocker blood pressure medication called Clonidine is often used to help patients through withdrawal.
393986 tn?1303825975 Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Gabapentin treats seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Gabapentin relieves the pain of PHN by changing the way the body senses pain.
Avatar n tn I take propranolol for Tremors from taking Gabapentin. I wanted to know if propranolol has withdrawal symptoms because I am weening off all meds to see if my new symptoms were caused by all the meds. I want to add meds as needed for Fibromyalgia.
Avatar f tn Hi there. Withdrawal symptoms are seen if gabapentin is discontinued abruptly. These are usually anxiety, diaphoresis, irritability, agitation, confusion, and status epilepticus. The symptoms that are associated with gabapentin withdrawal tend to mimic some of those associated with ethanol and benzodiazepine withdrawal, possibly because gabapentin augments GABA levels like these.
15227985 tn?1439629482 Because I am a chronic pain patient and also a recovering addict...I would like to clarify a few of the differences between Lyrica/pregabalin and Neurontin/gabapentin. They are "similar".....but also have some major differences. They are both medications that need to be titrated UP when you first go on them.... meaning to gradually increase your dose. Likewise, when you go off of either of them, you must wean yourself DOWN.
Avatar n tn Due to brain damage from surgery I have temporal lob seizures I was put on gabapentin and depression occurred. I am looking for something that would control the seizures without depression. Help with any idea! Thanks Would Dilatin help with this type of seizure?
