Gabapentin vs gaba

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin vs gaba

neurontin

Avatar n tn Your body uses taurine and B6 plus other cofactors to manufacture GABA, but gabapentin is pure GABA that bypasses the brain. Sometimes you can get a doctor to continue to refill prescriptions even if you can't afford to see him or her anymore, and there are community health clinics for people who can't afford healthcare. There are other ways to attack pain, of course, but the methods would depend on why you have the pain.
Avatar m tn Gabapentin is a class of drug known as a GABA analogue. GABA is an abbreviation for gaba-amino-butiryc-acid, a chemical neurotransmitter that helps induce sleep in the brain. GABA also reduces nerve impuses, which is why it works for neuropathic pain. While gabapentin is not GABA, it mimics its action, and creates drowsiness. The side effects are dose dependent, so please report your side effects and ask your doctor for help. Perhaps a reduced dose might help you with the drowsiness.
11079760 tn?1483386130 I have now fully weaned off of Gabapentin. After several months of constant right arm pain - mostly in my deltoid - I now only have intermittent pain episodes. However, my hand and neck sensations of being swollen have returned to about 50% of their worst. My right hand dexterity has definitely declined again :( I also have to note that I've been on vacation from my desk job for a week - so maybe it was all the computer work putting the strain on my arm?
Avatar f tn Hi, so I've been using gabapentin for withdrawal from hydromorphone. I used the hydromorphone to get off of fentanyl which Id been addicted to for 2 years. So I badly tapered of the hydro, and have been self medicating with gabapentin to nullify my withdrawal symptoms (about 2400mg 2x a day is what I've found at this point works best after establishing a tolerance).
6937315 tn?1386287618 Has anyone ever been put on gabapentin for severe anxiety/panic disorder? My doctor just prescribed it for me to help ween me off xanax that I've been on for 7 years. Was wondering if this has ever helped anyone?
Avatar f tn OMG....please let me clarify I wasn't meaning gabapentin!!!! I was meaning the vitamin Gaba 750...Crap, I didn't even look at that! The vitamin available at GNC.... OK...Gaba 750 - gamma amniobutyric (gabba amino acids) which is supposed to fill the gaba receptors in the brain which is supposed to bring on a calmer feeling. I just thought it helped with "brain" but it does say it's to enhance a calmer feeling.
4943237 tn?1428991095 Missing a dose of gabapentin would not cause 'breakthrough' symptoms, and gabapentin doesn't prevent anything. If it works, it just puts a damper on nerve pain, which can get worse as the med wears off. Of course, everyone is different, but still, I'm betting that the itching is just a (horribly annoying) coincidence. If it keeps up, try asking your neuro for a stronger dose, since at present you're at only half of the max safe level per day.
Avatar f tn This is because of scare tissue and nerve damage from a second cervical spine surgery.I was left in chronic pain and have radiculophy in arm and hand.Gabapentin is just one of many meds I am forced to take to deal with pain. I hope this helps you,the doctor will start you out low and Increase your dosage until you feel some relief and build on that.
Avatar f tn I was just given a script for Neurontin (Gabapentin) from my neurologist. Need to know side effects. Also, how tolerated is this for a persons stomach or digestive track?
393986 tn?1303825975 Finally, I was precribed gabapentin. Within a couple hours the pain was gone. Gabapentin is for nuerologic pain. For me it was a god send. I think I would have done myself in by now otherwise. It is a very inexpensive drug as well.

634733 tn?1316625992 I have heard that Lyrica actually worse that Gabapentin for the weight gain. I have gained a bit on the gabapentin too, but my mother was on Lyric and gained 30 lbs. in a VERY short time. you might want to reconsider it. I donèt know if it is a body type and condition that causes the weight gain, but I have heard it alot from people on Lyrica. Just check it out Pat, and see what your Dr.
8496079 tn?1398412516 If the assessment indicates you may have a GABA deficiency, then you can either try Gabapentin, or even better try GABA natural supplementation and see how that works for you. Must take on an empty stomach (250mg daily is the recommended dose by most health practitioners and there are no known dependency issues) Please do your own research for this, and also note that my comments are not intended as a substitute for medical advice.
Avatar f tn His doc as tried all kinds of tablets but none have worked so far. A few days ago she put him on gabapentin and i just wondered if any of you have had it and if so does it help? Any thoughts or ideas will be much appreciated because the pain and lack of sleep is really starting to get him down.
Avatar f tn There are also quite a few herbs that are relaxants that act on GABA, such as kava, valerian, hops, passionflower, skullcap, and a whole lot more. Gabapentin is basically an artificial substance that in theory acts like GABA, which is the body's relaxant and also prevents seizures when it's working as it should. Taurine is the speudo-amino acid the body uses to manufacture GABA, but of course it does this in combination with B6, but you've got plenty of it.
4544656 tn?1371593548 Welcome to the forum....sorry to hear you are having anxiety issues... Having been on gabapentin myself....coming off of it for 2 yrs...and then taking it again.....this post caught my eye. While it's surely a possibility that the way you are feeling is due to your own body chemistry and it's own personal reaction to gabapentin....I've never heard of anything like what you are describing. Gabapentin is not an addictive drug....it doesn't cause drug seeking behavior.....
Avatar m tn Well I remembered that I had read something about Neurontin aka Gabapentin helping other people with withdrawals. I had a bottle from something but had never taken them. Well I tried it. They are 300mg pills and the bottle said take 1 3 times a day so I started doing that (this was Monday evening). Well Tuesday arrived and although I didn't feel like doing cartwheels I wasn't bad at all but I felt very knocked in the dirt from the Neurontin. They made me so sleepy and out of it.
2033870 tn?1329481339 Seems like the definition of rapid cycling bi polar would allow many bi polar people to fit that category. I am manic bi polar myself and i cant tell you much about neurontin but it must be better than xanax because i can pop 6 or 8 xanax and it wont even slightly slow me down. I have had a lot of luck with a drug called symbyax. Its a good drug if you got good insurance but too expensive if you dont. It finally got too weak for me though and i just quit medication.
Avatar f tn I was perscribed Gabapentin which is generic for Lyrica, I believe. I was perscribed this prior to my diagnosis and my insurance just approved it. Does this medication help w/the pain or what? I have never taken this before and don't know exactly what it is for. The doctor who prescribed it gave it to me months ago but my insurance said they didn't cover it so I just forgot about it and then I got the diagnosis and didn't think much of it after that.
Avatar m tn First, why didn't your doctor put you back on vyvanse if withdrawal was the problem and taper you off slowly and save you all this pain? I had a shrink do the same to me with Paxil, and I've never recovered. Alas, too late for that now. Don't let them take you off cold turkey again, and don't let them stop the taper until you're safely avoiding a protracted withdrawal.
Avatar m tn My more mild upper left quadrant rotating pain that I had for the first six years seemed to almost stop entirely when on 300mg gaba, but shortly after this reprieve, the very intense pain attacks began. It took a few weeks before gaba seemed to stop the long lasting type of pain. Later for the attack pain, increasing dosages seemed to also take some time before making a diufference.
Avatar f tn I started gabapentin on march 1st. Since then I have gained 10 pounds! I lost 120 pounds and had kept it off for more than 2 years. I am crazy anal about my calories, and eat mostly fresh fruits and vegetables. I walk several times a week. Nothing in my routine has changed. I may even be more active. Has this happened to anyone else? And will the weight come off if I stop the gaba?
