Gabapentin off label use

Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin off label use

neurontin

Avatar n tn Did your doctor prescribe it to you for this? If not, STOP right now...'experimenting' with prescription medications, which are extremely addictive can NEVER have good outcomes.
6937315 tn?1386287618 I've been prescribed it by my psychiatrist for anxiety, but have so far been afraid to take it, but my situation stems from a bad reaction to stopping a medication years ago so I'm kind of at the desperation stage. She says it does help some people. So I can't give you my own experience but can tell you it is used off-label for anxiety. It's basically GABA, which is something the brain uses to produce calm and pain relief, and is what benzos target.
Avatar f tn ) So from all the post above I am sure that you have figured out that the usual Rx of Gabapentin (neurontin) is usually used (off label) for Nerve pain..Also known as Neuropathy. Originally it was used for Seizure disorder. Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. I too have not heard of this medication used "Off Label" for balance issues. It will be interesting as to how it is going to work though. So please keep us updated on how it works for you.
Avatar f tn Hi I was reading your post, I am so sorry to hear about all your surgeries and pain. About the bmp1 off label use and having problems are you retaining an attorney? Seems like a good option, maybe your pain is caused by that off label use which could be the responsibility of the physician or medical company.
Avatar f tn It is perfectly legal for a physician, once a med has been approved by the FDA, to use it for off-label purposes. What isn't legal is for the manufacturer to talk the physician into using it for off-label purposes. So this med might be the best thing for you, and it might be completely inappropriate depending on where the professional got the info from. So you're right to question things, but as I said, that doesn't mean this isn't a good med for you.
382218 tn?1341181487 Unfortunately because of the rules in this forum I cannot comment on all the off-label medications which we use, but suffice it to say there are many more and they usually fall under the categories of anti-seizure medications and antidepressants. I do not use cannibinoids, nor do I personally recommend them. As one patient in rural Pennsylvani said very correctly: "MS is a disease that affects the brain, so why would you want to take a medications that affects your brain?
Avatar f tn Neurontin or Gabapentin is widely used to treat neuropathic pain. It’s off label use includes treatment of cluster headaches and chronic tension headaches. Gabapentin is known to cause dizziness, drowsiness which can explain mental fogginess and peripheral edema at high doses. Do you have any swelling in hands and feet? Gabapentin does not increase weight in any other way. I would suggest you to discuss this with your physician.
Avatar f tn Welcome Jules! Glad you found us. In case you haven't find them yet we have Health Pages in the upper right hand corner of this page , next to the yellow icon, they are filled with a wealth of information. Many members on the the board take amitriptyline (Elavil) or nortriptyline (Pamelor) to their does of gabepentin. It seems to be a good adjunct to the gabapentin and increases its effectiveness. There are other drugs that are used "off-label" for pain control in MS.
Avatar f tn Hi all, I'm now 17 days clean of opiates. I was using 20ish 10/325s a day when I quit, with a habit that spanned over three years. Like many, this is not my first rodeo. I've tried to quit in the past and the lack of energy always nudged me back to those grievous little yellow pills. I've seen some recent talk on the boards about Gabapentin being used to manage opiate withdrawal.
Avatar f tn So I think I am over the withdrawals from the tramadol but I have been taking high doses of gabapentin in that 7 days. Like anywhere from 900-1800mg a day to stave off withdrawals. My question is how long will it take to develop a gabapentin addiction because I've read horror stories about the withdrawals. So I wanna stop taking it in like 3or 4 days but I just wanna make sure I won't suffer any withdrawals.
1039200 tn?1314912008 I looked up Lyrica in my PDR (Physician's Desk Reference) on my iPod. An off-label use of Lyrica is for generalized anxiety disorder. It is not listed as a mood stabilizer. Its FDA approved use is for pain and partial seizure.
1446842 tn?1284573140 Buspar hasn't really been shown in studies to help with much of anything other than augmenting ssris, so I don't know what it's side effects are -- given that the manufacturer's own studies don't show many effects. Gabapentin has never been approved for emotional problems, so it's being used off-label and there's therefore not much research to go on -- this med anecdotally helps many with anxiety, but it's approved use is mostly for neuropathy.
Avatar f tn I have been on Gabapentin for years. It is a generic for Neurontin, which is prescribed as an anti-seizure med, but off label is prescribed for nerve pain. It usually takes higher doses for nerve pain. I was taking 900 mg per day, 3 am, 3 noon, and 3 nightly. Now I take 3 at night and 2 during the day. I am on other pain meds to help with the pain from 2-level cervical disc herniation and multi-level DDD and radiculopathy in my arm, hand, back and leg.
Avatar f tn Neurontin is an epilepsy drug--it has a number of "off-label" uses and one is chronic pain. The Elavil at nite is for pain management and anxiety. Of the two GABA is the drug with the most serious side effects--like Steven-Johnson syndorme--so you really should educate yourself and learn about the drugs and then find out for yourself if you want to take this medication. Do the benefits outweigh the risks of this medication?
100019 tn?1335919717 For genotype 1 patients who cannot take interferon, the panel recommends sofosbuvir plus the HCV protease inhibitor simeprevir (Olysio), with or without ribavirin, again for 12 weeks. This off-label regimen has not been through full Phase 3 testing, but performed very well in the Phase 2 COSMOS trial.
Avatar f tn They all have reported feeling better daily - this off label approach is a God Send! Now I will finish out the 12 weeks - they will do the viral load test again at that time and then 12 weeks post treatment test again to declare me officially SVR!!! NO HORRIBLE INTERFERON OR RIBAVARIN THIS TIME FOR ME!!
1635208 tn?1300807160 Hi welcome to the Hepatitis C community Olysio per the prescribing information sheet is intended to be used with interferon and Ribavirin. The same applies to Sovaldi. Per prescription they are not used together. However there have been clinical trials using them together "off label" and they have been shown to be highly effective when used together. You can web search for Cosmos clinical trial cohort 1 and cohort 2 to see study results.
Avatar m tn Neurontin is used off label as a mood stabilizer, although by all reports it doesn't do a very good job at it, except for maybe a few rare people. Both of them get used off label for anxiety (I think it's Lyrica that's actually approved for anxiety in the UK, just not the US). That seems to work better overall.
1602212 tn?1327597618 Hi Bub, When I stopped taking hydros, the gabapentin helped alot. It took the edge off of the anxiety, and helped with sleep as well, which is difficult to come by when you're going through detox. I hope you have the same good results. Good luck to you and keep posting so we know how you're doing. Well wishes...
Avatar n tn s not for pain control, but docs use many things off-label. Have you tried neurontin (gapapentin), the earlier drug from Lyrica? Many tolerate it better, some less. It can also cause weight gain, as will any drug that slows you down -- these drugs are basically GABA, which is the body's relaxant, so when you target that you can gain weight. The medical approach with fibromyalgia is to treat the pain, the natural approach is to build the body up through diet, exercise, meditation, etc.
Avatar n tn ve done suggests that since gabapentin works by binding to a calcium receptor to prevent electrical signals between neurons, and since magnesium binds to the same receptors as calcium, years of gabapentin use could lead to a calcium and magnesium deficiciency. And magnesium deficienly would explain a lot of what happened to me when my health went haywire. I now take about 250% of the RDA for magnesium (approx. 675 mg.
Avatar f tn Usually when being used for chronic pain it isnt always initially covered until other avenues have been exhausted as this is condider the off-label use. It is getting covered more often though because it works for many. Definately read up on it first and hopefully find a pharmacy that is more helpful because pharmasists can be an untapped wealth of information and supportive member of your health care team.... best of luck ....
