Common Questions and Answers about Gabapentin dosing for dogs

neurontin

Avatar m tn What I would like to know is if we can direct a doctor to the right literature on this and he/she is willing to help, can gabapentin and tramadol be used to treat children for this condition of neurogenic cough and how would we find accurate dosing help? Would the typical dosage amounts of these meds used to treat children for seizures be applicable for this condition? If these medications cannot be used in children for neurogenic cough, what other alternative meds would be helpful?
Avatar f tn I am taking 15MG of long acting oxys for my knee but when I have to walk it does not help too much and I have to spend the rest of the day with my knee burning and trying just to get it comfortable which is pretty much useless.
Avatar n tn As for itching they can have antihistamines WITHOUT DECONGESTANTS in them. Ask you vet for dosing on any over the counter one such as benadryl (diphenhydramine) or Tavist (clemastine) or Chlortrimeton (chlorpheniramine) BUT most important get your pup on oral antibiotics and antifungals along with a good topical ear med like otomax or for really bad yeast clotrimazole drops. Also try cleansing the ear with a mixture of Domeboro solution.
Avatar n tn I am supposed to take 150 mg of effexor xr, once a day, for a total of 150mg. I am supposed to take 300 mg gabapentin three times a day, for a total of 900 mg. The gaapentin is to take the place of Zanax, which I took for anxiety and ocd. Zanax is addictive so the doctor is replacing it with this.
Avatar f tn When prescribing gabapentin carefully evaluate patients for a history of drug abuse and observe them for signs and symptoms of gabapentin misuse or abuse (e.g. development of tolerance, self-dose escalation, and drug-seeking behavior). Dependence There are rare postmarketing reports of individuals experiencing withdrawal symptoms shortly after discontinuing higher than recommended doses of gabapentin used to treat illnesses for which the drug is not approved.
Avatar m tn What you describe is not a side effect of gabapentin. They contraindicate its use in dogs that have kidney deficits, but the only side effects are vomiting, depression, excessive sleepiness and loss of balance. None of the other medications should cause otic issues either, especially since he's not new to taking them. It sounds like your dog has possibly developed otitis externa on top of whatever he's taking the gabapentin and other medications for.
1831849 tn?1383228392 The nurse who called in the Rx mentioned that it would take a while for the Gabapentin to get up to the required levels in my blood. I have seen about a 60% improvement in my foot pain. How long does it take for the levels to reach maximum efficacy? If 6 days is sufficient I think I'll ask about upping the dose.
Avatar f tn They could up your gabapentin dose. Have you tried Cymbalta? Some have good luck with it for CP. I have bad arthritis, RSD, nerve pain, fibro ...the list goes on. I was at very high doses of a many drugs, including narcotics, and it didn't really help my pain. I've had better pain control after coming off the narcotics, though some of the flare-ups are bad. I found swimming helped my pain quite a bit.
Avatar m tn t working that well, but if I stop taking it, what else is out there, and how would you tolerate it. If the Gabapentin seems to be working somewhat for you, I don't think I would do anything without talking to your GP and getting advice from him. Hope this helps, I tend to babble sometimes LOL ...
Avatar f tn Determining a dosage of tramadol for dogs is an exercise in futility. As with people, if the dog has a history of seizures it is important to let your vet know this, and they will likely tell you about alternatives. While the dosage amounts vary from dog to dog, the tramadol dosage for dogs can be put into effect by using the dog’s weight as the determinant. The usual range is .5 - 1.8mg per pound.
Avatar f tn m too slowed down. I feel better when my heart rate is in upper 60s or 70s. Recommended dosing for this condition is 3000-5000 mcg b12 per day. I took 2000 mcg this morning and will probably take 1000 mcg this afternoon. Is there a way I can take the b12 without it dropping my heart rate?
Avatar n tn Human grade fish oil supplements are made from exactly the same ingredients (usually!) as the ones for dogs. But check ingredients to make sure there is nothing in there that shouldn't be, and can harm dogs....such as xylitol etc. Pure fish oil is okay. But keep the capsules or bottle of oil out of the light, preferably in the refrigerator to prevent rancidity/free radicals, etc. There is some information, and information about dosages here: http://csu-cvmbs.colostate.

605458 tn?1539228808 I know they like to use once a day dosing with dogs, mostly for owner compliance. Its easier to remember, easier on the dog, and easier on the pocketbook, too! Are you checking his blood sugar? What kind of diet is he on? I don't know a lot about diabetic dogs, but the subject really interests me.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed Gabapentin for my nerve damage but i read a post on here by a "Brian" a member and he said he was taking up to 25 hydrocodones a day and Gabapentin helped with the withdrawals TREMENDOUSLY?? Has ANYONE else ever been prescribed GABA for withdrawals?? I am out of my meds (10/325 Percocets) and do not get my refill till the end of this month...I will continue taking these as my doctor prescribed and PRAY TO God That it will get me thru my withdrawals...
Avatar f tn I have been on Gabapentin for a short period of time for severe Bilateral Trigeminal Neuralgia and the MS Specialist I'm seeing started me slowly at 100 mg once a day then after a week 200 mg once a day and now at 300 mg once a day. They do this with gabapentin and slowly increase dosage to what helps ease your neuropathic pain. You do want to slowly increase as needed due to your body building up a tolerance and not working all together.
1207048 tn?1282174304 I started on Celebrex on Sunday. I take it every afternoon at the same time. I have not noticed any difference. I had read that it should only take "a few days" for it to start working. I'm not sure how long I should give it? Admittedly, I was not happy to be starting it in the first place, so my gut reaction is to only give it a week, and stop it if it doesn't seem to be working. The thing that seems to be working the most is my nighttime dose of gabapentin.
518994 tn?1212242047 Omega 3 Fatty acids are excellent for people and dogs. There are various vitamin-mineral supplements available that contain this or you could just add a little (~1/2 teaspoon) extra virgin olive oil to your dogs meals. Olive oil is a great source of Omega-3 Fatty acids. The omega-3's are the same for people and pets. If you give too much the result would be a bit of gas and/or loose stool.
Avatar f tn It needs to be diagnosed by a skin scrape and seen under a microscope or by looking at the dogs ear margin and elbows for a reflex reaction. Demodectic mange is a more complicated type and usually is diagnosed by skin scrape for the mites that hide deep in the follicles. A vet can treat by oral Ivermectin and should continue until 2 negative scrapes are taken. Mitaban dips can be used on dogs who can't take Ivermectin.
1983221 tn?1333506185 I also applaud Gabapentin (neurontin) it works well for me also but does take some tapering or getting used to, I should say
475300 tn?1312423126 Hi, I have been taking 300 mgs of gabba 3 times a day and it seems to be really helping. Here is my question.....I haven't been taking it as faithfully as I should for the last 4 or 5 days. Today my legs are aching like crazy, my right hip kept me up a good bit of the night and I really feel like crap. Is there a withdrawl from gabba? And do most people find that it works pretty good?
620877 tn?1282764097 For those of you who take Gabapentin (Neurontin): Just curious what side effects you have experienced (and at what dosage), and how long they lasted? I just started this last weekend, 300mg once a day at bedtime. I am having a really hard time waking up in the morning and for the first half of the day I feel a little "loopy" or my head feels "swimmy"....if that makes any sense.....
