Avatar f tn Total Testosterone will give a measure of both attached and free testosterone. And Free Testosterone is more specific and only measures free testosterone. Total T is the typical first test to get for diagnostic purposes. It's probably always the first test in hypogonadism. And normal range is usually (most labs) 300 to 800. About 1 to 2% (in most men) is free testosterone. The rest is attached. Free testosterone floats around and is biologically active.
Avatar m tn There are situations in which the total testosterone level is low but free testosterone levels are normal (your lab work shows low total serum and in range (albeit at the bottom of the range) free testosterone. Total testosterone is affected by alterations in the levels of SHBG and albumin.
Avatar m tn Hi, I'm a ~41 year old male. I recently had blood work done and found my Testosterone is a little low. The "Free" Testosterone was 45 and the "Total, MS" was 217. It was recommended I get injections every 4 days to get those numbers up to at least 500. In doing a little extra research of my own (because I was curious if there are natural ways to boost my numbers), I can't help but notice a lot of this could be due to diet and alcohol consumption.
Avatar m tn As well, Which testosterone? Free, total? Did you have a sex binding hormone test done? All this would be part of a comprehensive androgen check. The thing with hormones that docs seem to fail to remember from their training - is that they work in feedback loops. So if testosterone is low, other things are working overtime high to make up for it or not functioning at all - so the loop is broken. And since the androgen can come form the pit or the adrenals, they need to test you well.
Avatar n tn So over in the UK , there is no Free and total testosterone? In that case your level is very low. Its in range but very low. I would find a good urologist or testosterone person over there and explore the possibilities of testosterone replacement therapy. Even if your thyroid levels are low, the testosterone being raised will add to your libido, your energy level, and possibly aid with other issues as well.
Avatar m tn The total testosterone consists of two forms of testosterone; one is bound to SHBG and the other is free-circulating testosterone unattached to serum proteins. In conditions such as hypothyroidism and cirrhosis, measurement of the total testosterone level may be normal but the patient may have symptoms of low testosterone. In these conditions, the SHBG is increased and this decreases the amount of testosterone that is available for use.
Avatar f tn s effects on increasing levels of testosterone may be down to it lowering SHBG in the body therefore making free and total testosterone more active." - 30 ways to increase Testosterone by Gareth Middleton Barb it's Sheehan's syndrome.
Avatar m tn Total T, Free Testosterone, SHBG and Estradiol. Yes estrogen. If you have higher SHBG and/or higher estrogen it would be sucking all your Testosterone leaving little Free testosterone which is all your body uses and you will have low T symptoms. Not saying it is one or the other or both. But at your age you have the total T level of about a 70 year old man! And that is NOT anything close to "normal".
Avatar m tn had it rechecked and all numbers were great - my total testosterone 522 ,free testosterone 73.9. Never absolutely trust doctors!
Avatar m tn but turning down my wife or not being in the mood has gotten real old. I had my testosterone tested 2007 total was 297..my doctor did nothing. 2010 I have a New doctor now my test is total 453 free 11.6 My new primary doctor and I agree optimim total should be 800 free 18.0 Doc says my testicles have atrophied a bit. I have a PSA of 2.
Avatar m tn I personally think the whole testosterone treatment is a scam. Nobody tested me for free and albumin bound testosterone, the biologically active forms. Total testosterone is useless. This is like measuring total cholesterol without the HDL and LDL fractions. The primary practice docs are totally clueless. I would recommend talking to a good endocrinologist only.
Avatar m tn Hello, Chap. I think your birth year coincides with mine. On to your question... Before I get there, know that I am NOT a medical doctor. However, I do participate on testosterone forums (in fact, I belong to an excellent forum on yahoo which consists of men recovering from low testosterone. A few of the members there are medical doctors, as well.) Libido is complicated, influenced by more than simply testosterone. That said, we should consider the actual results from your bloodwork.
Avatar n tn Low levels of testosterone are linked to muscle and bone loss, coronary artery disease, diabetes, depression, erectile dysfunction and loss of self-esteem.
