Common Questions and Answers about Fluoxetine vs effexor

prozac

Avatar n tn Hi all! I just started back up on Prozac about three weeks ago now. Come to think of it, it has been 22 days. For the past 22 days, I have been having some awful dizzy spells. When I say dizzy, I don't mean lightheaded or faint. I mean it literally feels like the world is moving when it's not. Anyway, has anyone else experienced this? And if so how long did it take for it to pass? I experienced this with Effexor, previously, and it took exactly one month for it to pass.
Avatar n tn t seem to work out weather its the withdrawing from effexor or the fluoxetine trying to get into my system and keep me at a steady balance. what dose of fluoxetine are you taking??? I'm currently taking 20mg.
Avatar f tn My dosages have ranged from 75-125. My shrink has decided to take me off Venlafixine and go back on Fluoxetine. I used to take Fluoxine for 20 something years but went into a BIG depression about 1.5 years ago so I was switched to Venlafaxine. The reasons I am being switched to way too long to type here but this is my question .... My shrink told me to stop the Venlafaxine one day and start Fluoxetine 20mg the next day. Shrink said there would be NO side effects. How can this be?

Avatar f tn From July 2006 to December 2006 I went through a slow and difficult withdrawal from Effexor 37.5, after being on Effexor for about 10 years or so. I initially went on it just due to depression over a bad job situation; I ended up staying on it because I felt so lousy every time I tried to quite. Finally, I used the program and supplements from theroadback.org faithfully, to help with the withdrawal, and my doctor was aware of the program.
Avatar m tn I was put on Effexor after weeks of panic attacks that turned into depression as I was to scared to leave the house even with somebody I just wanted to be at home where I felt safe, Effexor after a few weeks were my life saver until I weaned off them and was panic free for 3 years then bang it came back went on another med fluoxetine and again had to wait a few weeks to feel back to normal which I did for 12month then weaned off until 5 weeks ago bang it came back again and they put me back on
Avatar n tn When I was on effexor alone, I became suicidal (never before), cut myself(never before) did sexually provocative things( my husband loved that) and as an artist, became more creative. Was this just effexor....or do other anti depressants do this to bipolars? I read that effexor was a medication that increased serrototin and neoriprimine( you know what I am trying to spell, right?) and that because of the increase in these two neurotransmitters, dopamine is bombarded and basically suffocated.
Avatar f tn Anyone had good results from switching from effexor (venlafaxine) to fluoxetine (prozac).
Avatar f tn been to my docs today to tell him the effexor are not working for me i'm not feeling the happy effect from them at all so hes given me fluoxetine (prozac) to take from monday as hes said from today take 75mg effexor every other day till sunday. but still carry on with my 15mg mirtazapine at night. i feel i should take both effexor and prozac together and my mirtazapine at night for at least 2 weeks then come off the effexor. what does anybody else think?
Avatar f tn does anyone take prozac (fluoxetine) at night time and if so is better to then than taking it in the morning as its making me sleepy during the day.it has made me feel better in myself than when i was on effexor coz that made me think horrible and one time do sumthing i regret now.
Avatar f tn , and she took me off Zoloft immediately and put me on Fluoxetine 20 mg. X 1 week and then bumped me to 40 mg. I experiended severe nausea and no appetite. 6 weeks later, I still have nausea from the Fluoxetine. Panic attacks are a little better but I am beginning to think I should have stayed on Zoloft because I can't recall feeling this bad. I am now seeing a psychiatrist and they have taken me down to 30 mg. of Fluoxetine in hopes of helping my nausea.
Avatar m tn I have Bipolar and have been recently taking Lithium Carbonate, Effexor XR, Geodon, and Klonopin. My psychatrist has been lowering my Effexor dose over the last few months. And I have been having issues with some dizziness with each decrease in dose. A little over two weeks ago, I took my last Effexor dose. Since then I've been having problems with severe vertigo, nausea, and "brain zaps.
Avatar n tn I am a 75 year old widow. I have been taking Effexor XR 150mg per day for some time now. I have been discussing the possibility of withdrawing from this medication completely as the situations that contributed to my depression have all resolved and I no longer feel that I need medication to help me deal with my mental health. She has been most understanding and is anxious to help me withdraw over a six week period.
Avatar f tn I was started on Fluoxetine 7 weeks ago and I have noticed that my severe panic attacks are better, but I still wake up every morning with a nervous stomach which escalates unless I take a 1 mg Klonopin. I can usually go untill around 2 or 3 before I start feeling jittery and have to take another Klonopin. I started on the Fluoxetine at 40 mg and I just went to the doctor today and she increased it to 60 mg. Does this medication really work for panic attacks and anxiety?
Avatar n tn You are asking if there is an anti-depressant that is the less likely to cause weight gain than Effexor. As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above. It is unclear why anti-depressants cause weight gain.
Avatar m tn i have never taken wellbutrin but my daughter does, i have taken effexor. for me the effexor was terrible, but some people on this site do very well with it. it made me extremly tired, heart palpitations, raised my blood pressure, jaw pain and many other problems. my daughter says the wellbutrin helps her depression but makes her anxiety worse so if you have anxiety you may have to take something for that on top of the wellbutrin. in my opinion, effexor is horrible, i hated it.
543959 tn?1301315419 hi i have battled with depression for years, i have been on 40mg of fluoxetine for 18 month and i came off them as i wanted to try for another baby, i am now 12 weeks into pregnancy with no medication and im really starting to feel depressed, i know im having a lot of hormonal changes but i know its more than that.
Avatar f tn This is my case and it is difficult to understand what I am suffering from most now as the effects of being on effexor are much like a thyroid gone bad. And since I stopped effexor and all antideppresson drugs almost 7 months ago. However now I feel effexor withdrawls are worse. I am aware of this happening and am trying to deal with both problems. Has anyone else felt this same thing and if so how do you deal with it, how do you tell which is which, thyroid or effexor?
Avatar n tn Not true that people find Effexor more effective. They all affect each individual differently. Effexor tends to have far more side effects than Zoloft, and is known to be much more difficult to quit. On the other hand, are you sure Zoloft is any safer during pregnancy? Whatever the case, you'll have to taper very carefully off Effexor before you start Zoloft so you can tell which is a side effect of Zoloft and which is a withdrawal effect of Effexor.
Avatar m tn I mentioned about switching from Effexor Xr 225mg (which on my own I lowered to 150mg) He said that Effexor XR affects two different areas of the body whereas Zoloft only affects one area. Now he mentioned NOTHING about keep taking the Effexor Xr in lower does while I make hte switch to Zoloft. Am I supposed to just switch right over to Zoloft and discontinue the Effexor Xr??
Avatar n tn Never rush coming of psych. meds. I'm on Effexor, as Citalopram didn't help.Am on it for life, as I've relapsed several times, only to end up in Psych. Hospital. Consultant insisted that it is in my best interest to remain on Effexor 150 mg as a 'maint. dose. Along with 3.75 mg. of Zopiclone (sleeping tablet) Since I've not quitted Effexor I can't answer your question. Take longer than you are tempted to before you quit.
Avatar n tn All of these can cause digestive problems. Effexor could have, too. You just never know. Keep in mind, Zoloft is very different than Effexor, it's a different class of drug. It tends to be less problematic than Effexor, which is why your psychiatrist might have recommended it, but it's also a weaker antidepressant since it doesn't target norepinephrine, only serotonin. I'm not the doctor, by the way, just a user!
Avatar m tn SSRIs often interact with the metabolism of lots of medications. Paroxetine (Paxil), Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Citalopram/Escitalopram (Celexa, Lexapro) are inhibitors of CYP2D6 - the enzyme responsible for metabolizing lots of medications. Fluvoxamine (Luvox) is inhibiting another enzyme. Sertraline (Zoloft) do not have this side effect, and Venlafaxine (Effexor, a SNRI) is also perhaps a good choice, as itdood said.
