Avatar f tn My father is in the final stages of dementia. He can no longer hold anything or walk. He quit speaking about 4 years ago. I just was recently told that he no longer chews. This has been for about 6 weeks. His food is thickened so he can swallow it. He has lost about 20 pounds in 5 months. His albumin level is 2.7, and 2.5 is sometimes the criteria for hospice care. My question is, how much longer before he loses his ability to swallow?
Avatar f tn When it became evident that she was in the final stages and gasping for breath they administered morphine, orally, then a suppository, then orally again. It all happened so fast but when the last dose was given I was overwhelmed. Thankfully she lived for an additional 4 hours becasue I know now that I would have had a hand in her death by giving them permission to ease her pain. But I am left was such anguish that I could have helped to end her life. How do I cope with this feeling?
1832268 tn?1326816010 (please forgive any misspellings) My mother just recovered from a bout of interstitial pneumonia, and has been told that she is in the final stages of her pulmonary hypertension...could you please tell me what an average life expectancy is at this point...? She currently needs to use 6 liters of continuous oxygen per minute to maintain an oxygen saturation in the 94 percent range. She maintains this saturation as long as she remains seated.
Avatar f tn If depression levels are dangerous to the point of loss of health, persuade them to go to a doc for medication to balance them out a little. Other than that, just be there.

Avatar f tn Cirrhosis is a 6 on the Ishak system that was used to assess the amount of liver damage. It is the final stage of liver disease that can be assessed using a biopsy. There are no "stages of cirrhosis" from on any biopsy scoring method. Only stage 6 on the Ishak and stage 4 on Metavir. Your liver disease was assessed at a 2. You have minimal liver damage at this time. In fact since your liver damage is only beginning you could wait for future treatments if you desired.

3189527 tn?1346667221 Well, it's completely understandable that you would be feeling depressed! That's an awful lot of loss to experience in such a short time! Have you ever had trouble with depression prior to this? You said you're on meds..what do you take, and how long have you been on them? My advice is to seek out some therapy to help you sort through these feelings. The grief process takes a while, and everyone handles loss differently.
Avatar f tn I know exactly how you feel to well! I'm 24 weeks pregnant with a baby boy my mum's first grandson and my mum is at the final stages of lung cancer her body is starting to shutdown she will never get to meet him and I'm devastated!
Avatar m tn What you are experiencing is extremely common, and normal. When we are dealing with the loss of a loved one, it brings our own mortality into sharper focus. The death of someone we love is unquestionably, in my opinion, THE most stressful life event we must all endure. And that stress can manifest itself in countless ways, anxiety being very close to the top of the list.
6246858 tn?1382269276 They were both just 10 years old. Spike was in the final stages of renal failure. I gave him sub Q fluids for over a year. I did everything to keep him alive. Sugar, who was healthy, was so upset over her brother's illness. She understood and never left his side. One day Sugar barked at the mailman and began to scream in terrible pain! I ran to her, she was upside down and crying. She looked like she was having a heart attack. She never showed signs of heart trouble.
Avatar n tn she was diagnosed 4 years ago with the beginning of cirrhosis. the final stages of hepc include cirrhosis of the liver (fluid buildup in abdomen, water on the brain which leads to confusion, bleeding from mouth, sleep alot, flip flop of days and nights, etc) and flare ups of hep c which include temp, open sores, flu like symptoms, itchy skin.Eventually they will fall into a coma. hope this helps. have him evaluated. they can do a liver biospy to determine whether or not his liver is effected.
