1670461 tn?1303742265 Anyone else here following the New Atkins Diet? I have been following this lifestyle change since Jan 3rd, I've lost 15lbs and my blood sugar reading are much improved. I feel So much better and when I cheat and do eat too many carbs I am amazed at how awful I feel.

Avatar f tn The atkins diet will work as long as you don't have too much fat - it can overtake your daily intake of calories and then you will lose nothing. If you don't have them, buy ketostix at your neighborhood pharmacy (that brand works best) to check your level of ketosis. The darker it is, the more you're in and you kind of have to lose... Watch out for hidden sugar in your fruits and veggies though, cause it all adds up. In re: to the diet they put you on with phentermine.

Avatar n tn You should remember that some aspects of the Atkins diet are not necessarily heart healthy and the diet has not really been well evaluated in paients at risk for coronary disease. If you are not able to maintain your cholesterol profile within guidlines we generally would recommend lifestyle modification to eliminate fatty foods and supplant them with complex carbohydrates along with exercise. Thus may necessitate steps to modify the diet.
732164 tn?1237118767 I had a lap band and the diet you have to follow for that is a modified version of Atkins. It's all about low carbs, high protein, but its also low in sugar/fat. I did really well with it and am doing it again. I posted before that I don't really feel like my lapband did TOO much good, its just as much diet/exercise after as it was before. But the protein definitely fills you up more than the carbs.
Avatar n tn I never did the diet, but my husband did. He did the atkins diet because he said he felt like he was addicted to carbs and thought that atkins would work for him. He was right, for a while anyway. He was on the diet for about 5 months and lost 40 lbs. He did exercise about 3 times a week also. That was 2 years ago, but once he quit the diet (says he just couldn't stand it anymore) he gained back the weight and a few extra pounds.

But I have many doubts, it goes against all we have ever been taught about preventing heart disease. The diet would consist of eating all the fats and proteins he wants and only 20 carbs per day, it claims the body will burn excess body fat and will actually lower cholesterol. Avatar n tn I would try You on A Diet by Drs. Roizen and Oz instead. I have done Atkins twice and it hard to maintain after the weight loss. You on a Diet is more reasonable for the long haul. Just my 2 cents.

1159480 tn?1263405571 m glad to see some positive talk about the Atkins/lo carb diet. I went on the Atkins diet about 6 years ago. I lost about 50 lbs. Once you get used to it, it's easy. And, I kept the weight off for the 6 years. I only gained back a few pounds when I started eating carbs again. You really get used to not eating alot of bread and sweets and it does not bother you after awhile. Unfortunately, what killed me was menopause. I gave in to the cravings for sweets and gained more weight back.

Avatar n tn DO NOT go on a high protein low carb diet . Atkins is horrible! It causes your bad cholesterol to go way up. And you will only Lose water weight. You will also stave your body of glucose. Your average daily protein intake should be 15 to 20 percent of your total daily calories. According to the U.S. Food and Nutrition Board, the preferred form of protein is from non animal sources: beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds. They are also naturally lower in fat too.
