495284 tn?1333894042 Today a 33 yr old woman was charged with 3rd degree murder. She had been supplying this man with her fentanyl patches. He had been smoking it. The coroner said this was the cause of death as he had respiratory depression. The article also said that overdose with this drug is common as it is so potent. I know the woman who was charged. I have waited on her many times along with her teenage daughters. We all think none of this can happen to us.....but it does.
Avatar m tn t experience severe respiratory depression when you combine the percocet with the morphine. If you are not opioid tolerant, you could overdose and die from the combination.
Avatar n tn The major problem is respiratory depression and resultant respiratory arrest. A patient regularly taking opiates can take 80-100 mg of oxycodone and suffer no respiratory difficulties. A new patient, however, staring at that dose may stop breathing. Similarly, if there is a hiatus and several weeks elapse the 80-100 mg of oxycodone may cause death because the cells reset. Calling a pharmacist will not help because there is no table to explain all this. And the PDR is not helpful.
Avatar m tn in the conversion, as getting some withdrawal is better than getting fatal respiratory depression-- something that really does occur, particularly when dealing with high doses of these medications. The withdrawal should be over within a few days-- once your body fat 'fills up' with the fentanyl, the blood level rises-- and the opiate effect increases, sometimes dramatically.
Avatar m tn Opioid therapy conversion needs to be very conservative, because opioid overdose can lead to respiratory depression and may be fatal. Please follow-up with your provider in working out the best possible pain management for you. First of all: 1. What is the dose of the fentanyl patch that you are applying? Is it the equivalent dose of what you are currently on? If not, you may not get equivalent pain relieve from the fentanyl patch.
897990 tn?1248268956 Thats a way to overdose very easily chewing the fentanyl releases the full time releae dose for three (3) days immdiately..........combining with methadone is the worst possible combination - they combine to make the most rapid and lethal mix for respiratory deperssion and arrest - - - only way to OD faster is to add a particular bemzo ........ you wont know that you stopped breathing until its way too late.......
1751415 tn?1315069443 You can consult his intensivist regarding this and dose needs to be monitored because of the risk of undue sedation and respiratory depression. Hope this helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn I got off Fentanyl over a month ago. I am still taking small doses of my oxycodone but plan on coming off once I feel better from the Fentanyl withdrawal. My question- I am having severe depression problems. The things I once enjoy give me no happiness, I could literally stay in bed all day (I don't but I feel that way). I don't enjoy my family and perfer to isolate. Is this normal? Is this part of withdrawal or is something else going on?
Avatar f tn I think a swich from Tramadol to Oxymorphone is a really big leap so watch for severe respiratory depression. Your body will get used to this new med in a week or so and the respiratory depression should subside. Please let us know how it is working for your pain!
Avatar f tn I have recently found out that I have a few things going wrong with my back. I have been going to a pain management/spinal doctor for the past 2 months and am on Oxycodone, Kadian, Neurotin(sp?), & have just started the 12mcg patch of Fentanyl today (5/8/09). I am wondering what can I expect from this patch - the good, the bad & the ugly? I am not a newbie to oral pain meds as I was in a pretty bad car accident 11 years ago where I crushed part of my knee & messed up my leg.
Avatar m tn Hey, I have some limited, years ago, experience with it. It's not really any different than any opiate. Stronger but they all seem strong when you don't have any! They all cause the same exact symptoms. The Imodium will help. I am not going to say how to do it on an open forum, but you can definitely google it. I would not OD on it or anything! It's only going to help so much though. Some of the symptoms will still be present even if you take it the way people explain.
Avatar f tn I looked both of these up and it says that they can cause lower oxygen or respiratory problems. My oxygen already goes low when I am sleeping. I am really scared now. Has anyone had these meds with low o2??
Avatar m tn Is she convinced her anxiety and depression is caused by the fentanyl? Is she feeling at all better from the 50mg decrease? It sounds like her pain has increased. Keep in touch.

Avatar n tn If you use Xanax 4mg a day, what is the best pain reflief med you can use without risking serious sedation or respiratory depression? Indeed, does that kind of med exist?

Avatar f tn I have been on fentanyl and percocets for 3 years. I have noticed the past year or so that I am having depression, no energy, feel horrible, can't even do anything just so exhausted. I thought it was depression but the more I read the more I realize it is most likely from the meds. My symptoms just keep getting worse and worse. I feel terrible all I can do is cry. I need someone for support to help me through all this.
Avatar m tn ve had mild depression since childhood. Researched today and I think I have Post Acute -withdrawal symptom, Every 3rd day I am in bed, no appetite, flu symptoms, fighting severe depression. Weed helps, but not something I want to do everyday either.@ 45 when Fibro arrived inexplicably, now 57 and wonder why I want to continue. Here for the family. severe Anhedonia. 1386425 tn?1280119158 SCHEDULE II OPIOID AGONISTS, INCLUDING MORPHINE, OXYMORPHONE, OXYCODONE, FENTANYL AND METHADONE, HAVE THE HIGHEST POTENTIAL FOR ABUSE AND RISK OF PRODUCING RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION. ALCOHOL, OTHER OPIOIDS AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DEPRESSANTS (SEDATIVE-HYPNOTICS) POTENTIATE THE RESPIRATORY DEPRESSANT EFFECTS OF HYDROMORPHONE, INCREASING THE RISK OF RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION THAT MIGHT RESULT IN DEATH. I am glad he survived the night.
Avatar f tn I am currently weaning myself off of Vicodin and Fentanyl. I am down to 4 vics a day and I have been off the fentanyl for five days. I just went down to 4 a day today. It is a rough day but I am getting through. I have read many emails and I see that depression is a big factor with coming off of the drugs and while being on them. I am on 50mg of Zoloft to help me deal with the depression I have due to my pain. Should I get off that as well?
268911 tn?1213744781 Last February during the height of my Fentanyl addiction I remember just barely being able to focus for days on end...like I was floating on air and nothing seemed to matter. I was to change this Fentanyl patch every 48 hours and I could not wait for that 2nd day to come...my life revolved around those damn patches. My wife even mentioned one night that my skin and eyes were "turning yellow." That is the exact moment in time that I knew I had a problem...
Avatar n tn I'm curious as to what you're doing for your original pain? I was on Fentanyl, along with various narcotic breakthrough meds but felt like the Fentanyl changed me. It's hard to describe. I came off the Fentanyl easily enough since I was on the breakthrough meds. Now I'm down to 10 to 20 mg. of oxycodone every six hours. I've always wanted to come off to see where my real pain is but I think fear has kept me from trying. But I am still trying, though slowly.
910419 tn?1289483727 The Fentanyl patch! One of my closest friends is actually on the fentanyl patch. So, I could maybe ask her about this for you... about how to approach this topic with a doctor. I will do that and get back to you on what she says.
Avatar f tn I ahve taken 10/325 percocet for years and recently my doctor has put me on fentanyl patches. She told me to try 1 25mg and if no help then apply 2 to total 50mg. I am wondering if I will suffer withdrawls from the change? Iknow it takes a while for the patches to get into your system, will I suffer w/d symptoms during this time?
