Avatar m tn i currently wear fentanyl 100mcg patch, exchange in 48 hrs, and taking 4 30mg roxicodone daily. would oxycontin work better than the medications i currently take?
790421 tn?1341230131 One major advantage of the fentanyl patch (or other long-acting medication) is that you aren't constantly trying to chase the peaks and valleys of pain control like you have to with short acting meds. I feel the other advantage that the patch has over other long acting meds is that it is LONGER acting, meaning that most long acting ORAL meds you have to take usually twice a day, whereas the patch is typically changed every 48-72 hours.
Avatar n tn Were you on anything before the patch? If so, what and how much? When is your back surgery and how will you manage the pain after that? 25 mcg isn't that high a dose and 3 weeks isn't all that long but Fentanyl can be really hard to come off and weaning off is best. Are you talking to the prescribing doctor about coming off? Whether you wean off or CT, the Thomas recipe is very helpful. With more information, you may get better responses.
Avatar m tn According to the conversion charts that I normally refer to the fentanyl patch would need to be 125 mcg to equal what you are taking now, which would be delivered over a 72 hour period. As far as changing from one to the other I would guess that your physician would start you on a lower dose as you begin the fentanyl therapy, possibly only 25 or 50 mcg's. Fentanyl takes 8 to 24 hours after application before your body fully absorbs the dose.
725248 tn?1316162245 s 90 mg of oxycodone plus the 100mcg patch of fentanyl..... I know that her back pain is real, however this seems like an excessive amount of pain medication. Any thoughts? She had a failed back fusion surgery in 2001 and switched from Oxycontin to the patch in January. Her reason for switching was so that she wouldn't be so "loopy" as we have called her but it seems as though we're right back where we started.
Avatar f tn I would leave the patch in place until I replaced it with a new one on the 10th. The patch continues to deliver the fentanyl as long as the patch is in place for a time. The Percocet will also help to ease any minor decrease in the fentanyl during that time.
Avatar n tn Hi! Thanks for having this online resource! I'm researching the pro's and con's of the fentanyl patch. My fiance has been in a great deal of back pain and is prescribed oxy's, morphine and percocet. However, he doesn't take them because they the only things that work for him are 80's and roxy's that he gets from family and friends.
Avatar f tn I have been using the fentanyl patch several years now. For me I had to increase the dosage, I think about ever three years. I am now on the 50 mg patch with meds for break through pain. I do go to a pain management doctor, and it is much better for you to talk to your doctor about the pain not being controlled. Your body becomes tolerant and increased doses are expected. I am surprised your doctor hasn't already increased the dosage after such a long time taking the same pain killer.
Avatar f tn Buprenephrine also comes in patch form and it is called the Butrans patch. The Butrans patch is strictly used for pain management. So I recommend going slow and listening closely to your doctor with regards to what the next steps are. We at medhelp are not allowed to provide tapering schedules for obvious reasons. Many here have successfully stopped Fentanyl through a supervised taper so it is best to talk with your physician and have him/her draft up a plan for you.

Avatar m tn I am a 28 yrs old guy, who had right knee total knee replacement at 2005. ever since then I have terrible pain following me. I have tried many different pain medication and even TENS unit, all of those didn't work. After trying all those option at yr 2009 my pain management doctor offered me to tried "FENTANYL PATCH." FENTANYL PATCH really help. Before the FENTANYL PATCH, I use to took 8 -11 tablet NORCO (325mg/10) per day for pain.
Avatar m tn This is being written by some one who was on the Fentanyl patch and the fentanyl lollipops/ sublingual tabs for advanced cancer. If you want to life in a Fent Fog. There are also new restrictions on driving whilst on this drug in the UK. I don't know about other countries. If your not sure it's working then its not working. You either have pain or you don't. Find out all you can about this drug and then decide if you want it in your life .
1412606 tn?1282882129 I think one reason doctors like to try the fentanyl patch is that you get 24-hour coverage. You also won't have to constantly chase pain spikes the way sometimes happens with oral meds. A few words regarding the potency of fentanyl. Yes, it's a very potent synthetic opiate and much more potent than morphine on a milligram-to-milligram comparison basis. BUT, that is why it is dosed out in MICROgrams instead of MILLIgrams. That is a tremendous difference.
Avatar f tn Went to the pain clinic and he put me on the Fentanyl patch 12mcg. I have so many drug allergies that the drs are limited as what they can give me. I am ok with one patch but when I put on the second patch I got chest pains, nervous, nauseated. Took second patch off felt better. Call dr next day told them what happened. He said to take up to 3 10/325 hydrocodone a day. Took one and it overdosed me. took that patch off too.
Avatar f tn and that is a good thing...r u taking any pain meds for break through pain?...but at a few monts//depending on the patch dose//u should be fine As mentioned there is a great pain forum here on MedHelp...also..
Avatar f tn As we know their are a few that will abuse the goodness of the Pain Dr. If the Fentanyl patch is working and your not in need of the oxycodone then just tell the Dr. Tell the Dr. you don't need it daily and that you are happy to have the oxycodone when needed. Sometimes just knowing it is there truely helps. The Dr. will be pleased and will feel he has done his job. It sounds like your over thinking the Contract. Pain Dr.
Avatar f tn 5/500 mg Hydrocdone a day. The pain management doctor wants me to use the 25 mcg. fentanyl patch, but my Rhumetalogist seemed to have a strong reaction to this and the pharmacy treated me as if I am a druggie when I went to pick it. I worry about taking medication, but don't know what else to do for the pain. Does anyone out there use Fentanyl? Is it as addictive as they say? Should I worry about the amount of hydrocodone I'm taking. By the way everyone acts, I feel like a druggie...
Avatar f tn I Have been prescribed 25 mcg/ hour Mylan Fentanyl patches.I'm on my third patch. I'm feeling no relief. I've enven tried using a heating pad and chewing on the used ones just to get some relief still nothing.Any suggestions?
1364139 tn?1280791344 I use the fentanyl patch for my neck and back pain and my pain management doctor feels that it is okay for me to continue to wear the patch during surgery (he is an anesthesiologist). I talked to the pharmacist today and he said that I absolutely should take off the patch, and even should take it off a few hours before since the medicine is still in the body and releasing so I don't technically need the patch attached to my skin for the last few hours before the surgery.
Avatar m tn So I'm on the Fentanyl 25mcg patch, switched from 180mg of Morphine ER because of tolerance. As I've said here before, but reiterating for those who may not know, it doesn't work for me. The Fentanyl that is. It was pointed out that the dosage is most likely low and I should be on the 50mcg patch, but I'm not a big fan of the patch in general.
1187071 tn?1279369698 I saw my pain doctor today and he put me on Fentanyl patch 25mgs every 72 hours. I have read all the papers on it and searched it on the internet. If there is any info on the patch that you don't read on the paperwork I was wondering if you could share. I put it on about a hour ago. My pharmacy gave me some things to go over the patch so it don't get wet, she said I can also buy them she gave me 2 of them.
