Common Questions and Answers about Fentanyl and morphine allergy

Avatar n tn I got as high as 75 mcg patch of Fentanyl every 3 days and then I developed some kind of allergy. The Pain Dr. says the allergy is to the adhesive, not the fentanyl. I am now down to 37 mcg every 2 days because the patches itch like crazy. I wake up in the morning and my patches are scratched off(even withTagederm) and there is blood on my sheets. My Dr. suggested spraying Benadryl but there has been no difference.
Avatar m tn My wife has been perscribed fentanyl patches and has been told not to eat grapefruit, does this apply to all citrus fruit ie.
Avatar n tn I don't know abt. the patch, it seems like it would prolong the withdrawl. Possibly delay the inevitable but give some relief. Are you withdrawling voluntarily or till your next prescription ? Usually by day 5 a person starts to feel better and alot of the really bad stuff is over. I really do think the fentanly is a bad idea but I know how being addicted goes, we just want it to go away. I hope the best for you and I wish I knew more abt. your situation to give a good opinion.
Avatar f tn I have never heard of a morphine patch. I have only heard of Fentanyl, or duragesic patches. I am sure they are similar though. They could have euphoria, itching, nausea, dilated pupils, sweating, overall sense of well being, constipation, etc. What have you noticed?
1326023 tn?1274867436 I found a few charts and they are all basically similar. 315-404mgs of morphine is equivilant to about 100 mcg of fentanyl. Thats oral morphine. The IV morphine chart is different. I do know that fentany is one of the strongest opiate medications available.. I believe it is much stronger than oral morphine. At least that is what I have heard and read. I also saw a show on TLC (Dr. G Medical Examiner) and she also stated fentanyl is the strongest opiate medication you can be prescribed.
Avatar n tn Is this morphine or Fentanyl? Are you sure it's point 75 (.75) or is it 75? What is the admin. route?
Avatar m tn would they switch you over to fentanyl and then taper the fentanyl and then move you to an oral med???
614471 tn?1221179194 ive just come off fentanyl patches onto the morphine so i can taper down, my aunt who died was addicted to heroin so i know a bit about it so i just wanted to know the equivalent so i can understand roughly how much morphine im taking. thank you to anyone that can help. kind regards, carrie.
Avatar f tn In my case my neurosurgeon has implicated that I will likely need some form of moderate to strong pain medicine for the foreseeable future, while my hardware becomes set with bone growth. I stopped taking morphine cold turkey and transitioned to 75mcg fentanyl patches with oxycodone every 6 to 8 hrs at 5mg. Fentanyl is very effective for me but I'm also planning on stopping that as well here soon and relying on low doses of oxy, for break through or chronic pain.
767538 tn?1276575320 I can only tell you my experience of course, but I did not like it. First, I went from 180mg of Morphine a day to the 25mcg patch. First I got hot flashes, and a "roller coaster" effect, it would work early in the day, then not at all. It also woke me up a lot and my heart would be racing a bit. After about a week it didn't even work at all. I'm back on the morphine at a lower dose and glad to be, I won't use the Fentanyl patch again.
Avatar m tn Hello Again Swede, Yes I remember your post. You ask some good questions. I took Fentanyl for a very short time but after 9 days when they tried to increase it to an effective dose I developed allergic type symptoms. I have been concerned with the delivery of the medication and the past recalls. But please understand this is my personal opinion and nothing make it right. It's just my opinion. I also took Morphine but it simply was not effective for my pain.
Avatar m tn Oral 24-hour Morphine (mg/day) Fentanyl Patch (mcg/hr) 225 to 314 mg/day 75 mcg/hr However, this is just a calculation based on the limited medical information I was presented. Since I do not have your liver and kidney status, it will be difficult for me to recommend the exact dosing regimen. Please consult your provider using this as a guideline. 2. If you are on Opana ER 30mg, why are you still taking Dilaudid?
Avatar f tn I did some research and some of the top side-effects with the Morphine are Headaches and Drowsiness and dizziness and being light-headed. There are many more than that but those are the ones that were at the top. I don't know if that helped you or not BUT I hope that it did. I really think you might want to consider talking to your NP about switching your BT meds.
Avatar f tn I feel like the transition to wearing them is pointless and I should just keep cheeking less and less. I feel better today. the morphine withdrawals really kicked my ***. I only have been taking the fentanyl for about a month and was taking a large amount of morphine on top of that.
Avatar m tn I thought you said you are on the Fentanyl but would prefer to return to the Morphine. Please clarify. And I do not think that once you take Fentanyl (25) and it doesn't work for you that morphine won't work for you again. We all have different systems and what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. I tried it at the 25 dose of Fentanyl and though it worked somewhat I was severely allergic to the adhesive. It scared me too.
1751415 tn?1315069443 Hello! I wanted to thank you for the information on Morphine. I neglected to mention that it was not the hospice nurse but the nurse from the nursing home. We will mention this. I know that they use a Fentanyl (hope I'm spelling it correctly) patch and morphine by mouth. They were giving him the patch with Vicodin but I guess because his pain was increasing they switched to Morphine. We are due to have a conference this week. Again, thank you!
Avatar f tn You use it to convert your fentanyl dosage to an equivalent morphine dose, and then find the equivalent morphine dose to oxymorphone, Generally when converting between opiates, doctors will reduce the new medication strength by a certain percentage to account for incomplete cross tolerance, which is a boost in analgesia you get from rotating from one kind of opiate to another. You can find equal analgesic tables, and apps for calculating equivalent dosing online.
Avatar f tn Took an awful long time to figure that I was SENSITIVE to morphine/codeine. After operations I went nuts with nausea and ITCHING...that dang oxygen thing up my nose!! I told them FINALLY about this that I finally had to figure out on my own and got on different anesthesia. WOW. What a difference!! Allergies imply something altogether different and one CAN develop an allergy to drugs such as morphine and THAT YOU don't want happening.
1052624 tn?1255795247 so that was out....I had morphine for the first time and it made me sick, so I was changed to dalauid (sp?)..... U should check and let the dr decide if there is something that could work for u.
Avatar f tn The withdrawl symptoms were in a word HORRIFIC. I saw my doc today and she put my on Fentanyl Transdermal System 12mcg/hr. Before I left the office she was kind enough to relieve my discomfort witha 10mg shot of morphine to cover the transition time. By the time I got the Rx filled an the patch on me ( that was about 4 hours ago ) most of the nice releive i got from the morphine was gone. I am now getting the creepy crawlers much like withdrawl and am very very cranky.
Avatar f tn I've been tapering down my medications (and made some great progress.) So far got off the Fentanyl 75 mcg., oxycodone 40 to 60 mg. every four hours. I had some pretty moderate withdrawals going off the Fentanyl and oxycodone. Nothing like cold turkey, but difficult nonetheless. I was switched over to morphine ER 30 mg. in the morning and 30 mg. at night. I already dropped to 15 mg. at night. I'm also supposed to take 15 mg.
Avatar f tn Definitely ask your doctor about a taper on morphine. Google opiate equivalency and find how much morphine to start at, talk to your doctor about a realistic schedule. Fentanyl is stronger than morphine, so don't keep taking it until you feel good. That would be a lot. Stay at a tolerable dose until you talk to your doctor again. Did he give you any idea of how much to take?
1345254 tn?1325918041 Hi and welcome to the pain management community! It is very important to understand that everyone responds to medication differently. Just because the Butrans patches didn't work for someone else, doesn't mean that it won't work for you. I have read posts from others that have said that they work very well and some that said the Butrans patches didn't work well for their pain. Everyone is different. Fentanyl patches are 80-100 times stronger than morphine.
Avatar f tn The amount of Fentanyl you are on is stronger than the starting dose of Morphine that I was on when I stopped taking Tramadol. And, the fentanyl dose is much much stronger than the Tramadol so I don't think you should get any withdrawal symptoms. I would just try to not take it anymore and see how it goes. But first and foremost make sure your doctor is okay with this.
Avatar m tn Since insurance has narrowed the long acting drugs they will cover down to very little, I take long acting morphine and hydrocodone for breakthru. When I start seeing signs of tolerance, we switch to xtampza and Oxycodone for several months then right back to my usual. Works great. If I had to guess I would say 15mg long acting morphine was not enough for you. 30mg would be worth a try. I know lots of people do well on the fentanyl patch. For me it didn’t feel consistent.
Avatar m tn Trying to figure out why this new pain specialist that I went to..to get off methadone would change me to morphine instead of lower my doses of methadone. It's been awful for me. He just seems to get too upset when I tell him I can't take the morphine and he has just continued to increase it. Then put me on fentany patches. I've told him over and over I don't want to continue on the morphine. He just kept saying that this didn't make any sense.
