Avatar n tn re new to puppies and dogs, your best bet will be to go to dog school. Petco and PetSmart usually have in-store classes for a low fee. And we want to see puppy pics!
Avatar m tn Yesterday my 18 month old daughter was lying on the changing table after her bath--I was about to put a new diaper on her. Sometimes she will touch her private area when I'm doing this--put her hands on it or pat it--both of which I feel is "normal" or ok. I've taught her that it's called her "private" and she refers to it as such. However, yesterday she took her stuffed dog and put it on her private saying, "Yum yum yum" as if the dog was eating.
Avatar n tn If so, your son will have to take over feeding him by hand, walking him etc to try to break him of the fearful behavior.
1300534 tn?1279121230 The advice to ignore this behavior also applies to dogs who are fearful of thunder or other loud noises. The more of a big deal you make of it, the more the dog thinks it really IS a big deal, so the unwanted behavior gets reinforced. How do you currently react when you walk in and she seems scared and urinates? Obedience training is great, and I'm so glad to hear you're doing that with your dog - so many people don't bother.
587083 tn?1327120262 You have a very insecure dog on your hands who needs a confidence boost. The peeing is a sign of submission. He is trying to tell you that he sees you as a strong pack leader and is kind of beating you to the punch. "Don't be mad at me! I'm a good dog! See - I'm even peeing so you'll know it for certain!" This behavior is not necessarily something he will grow out of.
Avatar m tn but if you abuse a dog, it will also fear people. i do not at all mean to compare your situation to that of a dog, but the principle is the same in how it can possibly effect social relationships. therapy is a very good way to get these types of mental scars up to the surface and attempt to overcome them. are you seeing a psychologist about it? if you were abused as a child, it's good to work through that as an adult with a professional. it sounds to me like you answered your own question.
740456 tn?1260449809 This kind of behavior is fairly new for her, she used to be very fearful (she is a rescue and has a bit of a rough past). She is also becomming very protective with our yard ( the neighbors dogs make their way over sometimes), but once again as soon as she sees me, she stops and when i open the fence she is friendly with them.
327385 tn?1378360731 This is actually a bad sign. And no, he won't outgrow this. He'll actually get worse if it's not dealt with. A dog needs to learn who the Alpha dog is in the family. Right now you're allowing him to be the Alpha dog when it should be you. This dog needs socialization fast. I'd recommend you contact a dog trainer or possibly a behaviorist and ask if they will work with you and the dog.
Avatar n tn Hello and welcome to the forum! Relocation can sometimes really mess with a dog's head. One of the best things you can do is get her on the leash, and take her for a nice long walk in the neighborhood. Dogs rely on their noses first to assimilate with their surroundings. She needs a bit of time to smell all the new smells that will now mean "home" to her. Of course, daily walks are a necessity for any dog, but walks are particularly important when they go to a new place.
Avatar f tn The one sentence that speaks volumes is that you "love them very much." My guess is that you show affection the majority of the time hoping to be rewarded by the behavior you want to see. Dogs aren't wired like that. Sure, they love affection, but they respond to leadership from their Pack Leader. A strong pack leader isn't mean, abusive, angry or impatient, but rather firm, patient and calm.
Avatar m tn So 4 years ago, I was walking by a dog and it’s owner at my apartment building and at that time, I was pretty fearful of dogs and this might’ve affected it’s behavior because it might’ve sensed my fear as well as seen me making eye contact with it and such.
Avatar m tn I have an 11 year old Great Dane who has quite literally been the best dog I have ever had, and been my best friend for years. He has no bad behaviors and is exceptionally well behaved. Or at least he was. He has always been fearful during storms, but within the past 2-3 months it has gone to extreme lengths, and he is now quite literally destroying my home if no one is home when a storm hits.
1672333 tn?1416694918 My dog is 2 1/2 years old and we have had him since he was a pup. He has never been abused by anyone. He is a huge baby!!!! When we first got him, we lived in an apartment. He was 9 months old when we moved to a house. He does really well with my family and my friends but when men (repair men, maintenance men, etc) come to the house, he acts very scared and growls and barks at them. His hair stands up on his back likes he's a shark!!!
Avatar m tn The dog was taken away for over one hr for xray, blood draw and catheter to draw urine. Dog is extermely anxious, sensitive and fearful at the best of times. Received bloods the next day and some concern was raised over possible renal cancer causing elevated HCT. My reserach has taught me that: 1. Splenic contarctions under duress can affect HCT count 2.
605458 tn?1539228808 Then some actual confidence building exercises that a good trainer can help you with. Further a behavior specialists can tell you about counter-conditioning this dog in this environment with food, jolly routine, other direct rewards from you when she displays confidence and does NOT display the fear behavior. So solution may lie in A) different med B) training and C) behavior counter conditioning.
Avatar f tn Recenty we had a friend who had a puppy who stayed with us for the last two weeks. The day before yesterday, he left with his dog. They got along great and played a lot. Now, all day yesterday she has seemed mopy, down, maybe depressed, but she has also been randomly shaking. I know she is due to go into heat early next month, but I'm not sure this is normal? She didn't act like this when she went into heat when she was 6 months old.
1323149 tn?1274638790 Puppies' behavior of course varies by breed, individual dog parents, the individual and the environment into which it is placed, among other factors. Generally dogs go through stages of maturity much as do human children, albeit at an accelerated pace. The "7 years per each human year" is not accurate.
Avatar f tn I initially thought it had to do with having him on the leash for some reason, as every time we take him for a walk, if he sees another dog, he goes crazy. We cannot let him near another dog because he has bitten another dog before. He barks, growls, and sounds like a wild animal- so embarrassing! There are many other dogs in our area, so we encounter this daily. Last week, he jumped out of the car after we parked in the driveway, and ran across the street and bit our neighbor's dog.
Avatar n tn My 5 1/2 years od sun is all of a sudden very fearful of our family dog. The dog is a large lazy lab that we have had since she was 6 months old- she is 8 now- and my 4 and 5 years old have grown up with her. They can pull on her- ride her like a horse and she loves every minute of it. She is as gentle and great with kids as any dog could ever be. She has never made an agressive move toward anyone. Out of the blue - he will not be in the same room as her, get near her, feed her or walk near her.
Avatar f tn I'm 17 weeks pregnant with my second child. My dog was fine in my first pregnancy very protective of me and would lay with me or by me all day long. He's just the sane this time but he won't stop sniffing me, especially my boobs!! Its driving me insane. Surely he can't smell milk this early on? Anyone else have this with their dog?!
Avatar f tn Before, he would not run out when we opened the door - now - he runs out. He tried to confront a 100lb dog! He is whining at the ceiling fan - he whines when he wants to get up somewhere and then he manages and I am fearful for his daredevil ways... What happened to my sweet kitty?
Avatar f tn You'll never know what happened before, so forget about it. You have to deal with the behavior in front of you from your dog's perspective rather than a human perspective. Take her fear of thunder for example. If you treat her as you would a human child with lots of cuddling and talking, you will only reinforce her idea that there really IS something to fear. Then she'll further learn that fearful behavior will earn affection.
419126 tn?1242412170 This IS a Dominance issue. Is she spayed? You must get this stopped! Do not allow it any longer. A firm NO (And loud hand clap) each time you see it will be a good start. Maybe a timeout in a crate immediately after. Make sure it's immediate (So the dog knows why she's being punished). Do it everytime till the behavior is stopped. You are expecting a baby and this could turn into a dangerous situation if left untreated. Your dog needs to know that she is Not the leader of the pack.....
Avatar f tn I have a mixed dog that will follow me around the house and at times will chatter his teeth and foam at the mouth. If I show him any attention while he is doing this, it gets worse.
Avatar f tn I am not a dog expert at all...I am sure Jaybay, the CL of this forum will respond with ideas for you...however, from what you have said, I agree with your husband...your dog seems to need more discipline and needs to be shown who is boss. Because you feel bad for the health condition of your dog, he is getting away with bad behavior...I know how much you love your "baby" I was the same way with my Tiffany...but it is time for you to take control...how?? wait for JayBay!! LOL!!
