Common Questions and Answers about Fear of driving on highway

fear

Avatar n tn My own sister developed a fear of driving on highways when she was much younger. Just as you said, she too can drive perfectly fine on other roads but not the main highways. I myself have never had a problem driving on any road or highway yet I cannot get on an airplane. My sister has no problem going on an airplane. Thats how are minds are, we develop fears that will be hard to break unless we face them head-on. So yours is more common than you might think.
909822 tn?1242700047 The best way to describe it to people is that when I am driving on the highway I get a strange and trippy feeling like I am driving forward but everyone around me is going backwards or that I am stopped...its a very strange feeling which causes me anxiety and my palms sweat, heart races and i usually have to pull over. This is taking over my life! and I can no longer drive on the highway which causes alot of issues living in chicago. I am wondering is this an anxiety attach??
Avatar f tn I just had one of the worst anxiety/panic attacks driving today. Was trying to drive north to see my boyfriend not even three hours away and got on the highway made it 15min before I got off in full panic. I have always had highway panic but could usually deal with it if I was in a good mood and excited about where I was going. In the past I have avoided it and taken back roads and this is what I eventually tried to do but it was all a mess.
598974 tn?1221675462 It is kind of hard to explain the feeling but I have to pull over on the side of the road . Then as soon as I am stopped my symptoms seem to go away? But then I get back on the highway and they return? I have three children and cannot drive with them anymore in fear I will get in an accident with them on long road trips. I just dont understand what is going on? I am 26 and have good vision as far as I know. I have never had problems with this before and have never been in an accident.
394991 tn?1214255907 It all started when I was driving with my husband in the car, and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to faint. I pulled over on the highway. My heart was beating really hard and I was sweating. I am not sure though, if this was a cause or a result of me having to pull over. Ever since then, I have not been able to drive because every time I get in the car I feel out of it, I am lightheaded and about to faint. I feel this way when I am a passenger in the car.
Avatar m tn But for an unrelated reason I had to stop taking my blood pressure mediation for three weeks...and all of a sudden I notice I was driving on the highway with zero anxiety or dizziness (I drove out to our lake house - normally I have to pull over to have my wife finish the majority of the 2 hour drive). I just thought it was an anomaly and still didn't put two and two together. I then went back to my doctor who put me on a different blood pressure medication.

Avatar f tn I am 38 years old and been having some issues when driving. Some of it is just difficulty seeing at night. But today I panicked on the highway. I thought I was going 75 and tried to slow down only to see on the speedometer that I was speeding up but it felt like I was going slow. Then I realized I was somehow reading the speed upside down and was really only going 30 in a 60 mph zone. Maybe I shouldn't be driving at all.
Avatar n tn a neurologist, a psychiatrist? This all began around the new year I was driving on the highway with my husband and felt like I was about to pass out. I quickly pulled over and the symptoms have been there ever sense. If you have any ideas, PLEASE help. I am terrified I will never be able to drive again. I am only 27 years old.
Avatar f tn Hey girls well I'm kinda upset at my husband because I'm still learning how to drive & tbh I'm scared of the road & he knows that & especially me being pregnant I want my kids & my baby in my belly to be okay but instead of him being supportive he tells me **** like always.
Avatar n tn It is definitely worse at night, most likely because I am much more tired at night Never an issue when I am the passenger I spend at least 8, It seems to be worse at this time of year January and March, and now it even happens on slower side streets. I can’t stand the lights (such as sunlight or headlights flickering through a guardrail), If I flip down my rearview mirror at night and adjust my side mirrors so that they don't reflect headlights, the issue is reduced, but not eliminated.
Avatar m tn When I have to drive on the highway to the city, or even on regular roads that are heavily trafficked I get really anxious. My hands use to get all tingly. Now I just feel my chest get really tight and like I can't breathe. It does not bother me when I drive around in my own town or other neighboring towns, but when I go to the big city it happens. Fortunately I don't have to travel there often, so I usually avoid it or have my husband drive.
Avatar m tn My doc currently put me on 75mg of Wellbutrn last month, I took it for 2 straight weeks and was feeling focused. However I stopped because of fear of seizures. I never had a seizure , but I'm worried I may get one while driving in the highway or with my family. Can using 75mg make you seize also i May start it again with this ongoing fear that I can black out at any time . Has anyone heard of anyone getting a seizure on 75mg or even 150mg? Thanks a million .
551604 tn?1333983135 But here in NY there was a lady with 5 kids in the car (3 of her nieces and 2 of her own) and out of nowhere she started driving the wrong way in the highway, causing her minivan to crash with another SUV and killing everyone(8 total) including herself. At first evryone was wondering how did this lady manage to that? She must have had a stroke or something? the kids were 4,5,5,7,9.. Her son (5 years old) was the only survivor.
637722 tn?1245086059 I can drive in most situations now but it seems, as I get older the fear of winter driving gets worse. I know why I feel the way I do; it is the fear of ‘being out of control’. When I know there is something between my tires and the road that can cause me to slide I get the ‘panicky’ feeling. I have been in counseling for depression (because my son was addicted to heroin) and the subject of driving in the snow/ice was addressed but not to the point that I am over it.
1004740 tn?1250394525 This almost sounds like the start of Agoraphobia which is the fear of leaving home. You should see a psychiatrist. If it is Agoraphobia, he may be able to help you before it get serious and you are unable to leave your house at all. Best Regards!
1310633 tn?1430224091 (CNN) -- A man trying to create a Bigfoot hoax on a highway died after being hit by two cars, officials in Montana said. Randy Lee Tenley dressed in a Ghillie suit -- camouflage designed to resemble heavy foliage -- and stepped out onto Highway 93 Sunday night, officials said. "He probably would not have been very easy to see at all," said Jim Schneider, a state trooper.
3997096 tn?1349317861 Kinda caused me to have a fear of driving. Pretty weird. I still have a slight fear of driving. I live fairly close to Chicago and have never had a fear of driving through there as many people do who don't live there, but haven't been able to do it since eot. Hopefully one day I will get over this fear.
Avatar n tn I know for a fact that getting out on Highways bother me and if the thought of it triggers a little anxiety within. Driving on dark roads also bother me, and I have avoided them at all cost. I see on here that some people cant go outside, to the grocery store, be in large crowds, etc but I dont have that problem, so would it be right to call what I have Anxiety too?
1804812 tn?1329677557 I am on day 6 of prozac and it seems that my driving anxiety is lower lately (knock on wood). My overall anxiety is a little elevated right now because I have some sinus crud going on and I automatically think it is cancer. Uggh!
Avatar m tn Get on anxiety treatment. I think you would benefit from a low dose of xanax (0.25mg)or (0.5mg) about 15 minutes before your gonna drive. But take it a couple times before bed to see how much it affects you and/or to build tolerance to the heavy sedating effect that is possible. Or a weaker benzodiazepine would work. See a doctor.
304653 tn?1217001302 Glad you were still safe on the highway. Always interesting that the contractions come on suddenly and unpredictably, whenever they want to. Keeps us almost due ladies on our toes. WIth my youngest, I sat through a Kindergarten orientation meeting having contractions the entire time. I thought my water was going to break at any moment. Water broke 2 days later soon after we arrived back home from a Mother's Day brunch.
Avatar n tn I know what you are going through! I have battled anxiety of driving on the interstate for about 4 years. It all started when I had my very first Panic Attack while driving alone on the interstate. I thought I was having a heart attack and was going to die alone at the age of 28 yrs old with a yound wife and a 6 month old daughter. It was terrifying! I am almost over the driving fear, but it has been a long a process. I have good days and bad days.
Avatar f tn About 2 years ago I had a very sudden and acute fear of driving over bridges. It came out of nowhere! I was pregnant with daughter at the time and was very swollen/off balance with the pregnancy. It felt like my car would just go over the side and I was petrified. Since then, I have avoided bridges that I deem 'too risky' - low sides, very high, feeling like you aren't touching the ground, etc. I feel as if I'm crazy!
Avatar f tn And have vomited quite a bit once. My biggest fear is having to throw up while driving on the highway. I am constantly in the car due to the fact I work in home health.
Avatar m tn ( and I will get caught in it. It does help me to know that there will be options like you said.. shelter etc. So am thinking maybe will leave like at 5am since all them happen later in they day seemingly. Hey Nursegirl - Thanks for the advice, very much appreciated. It's so weird this thing came out of nowhere. I have driven from one end of the state to the other now I am having issues driving six hours :( ugh.... The more prepped I am the better so that really hlps having a plan.
Avatar m tn I have a black berry and if you have one you know how small the buttons are so it was hard for me to even call 911, also I guess 911 goes to Highway Portol out here so I was on hold for 9 mins, thinking I was having a heart attack I was trying to figuare out how I was going to get someone attn. I was thinking about jumping out of the car on the freeway, I finally got to the hospital and they said that i had a panic attack. Since I have had these before, I did not think that was what it was.
