Acyclovir (Zovirax) and famciclovir (Famvir) are similarly nontoxic. The official prescribing information for valacyclovir indicates a 1% chance of minor abnormalities of liver function in people taking valacyclovir, which was slightly higher than 0.5% for placebo. That difference was not statistically significant and there is no suggestion even for routine liver tests in people taking the drug.
I have had the tingling on my lips along with redness for two months now with not break-out and been on and off with Valtrex and Famvir. Now I am feeling tingling sensations in other part of my hands but not as intense as when it was on my index and thumb.
My biggest concern is my son. I don't want him to get this from me. I've lost a lot of sleep and continue to stress out about this. None of the medications are working.
Antibiotics will not cure herpes, in fact, they will do nothing to alleviate symptoms either. Antiviral medication, such as Valtrex (valacyclovir), Famvir (famiciclovir), or Zovirax (acyclovir) can help suppress the virus so you will have less outbreaks and less frequent viral shedding, but it cannot be cured. However, you can still transmit the virus while on this medication, even if you are not having an outbreak.
Been tested and results are positive for HSV. Also getting zoster herpes. Taking FAMVIR 125 mg x 2 and/or zovirax (400mg x 2) every day as preventative but it is not working. Why is this not working anymore? What could be triggering this? Could I have another sickness causing this? I am getting desperate now. Doctors are just telllng me to take zovirax and disbelieve me. I will go and see a specialist again but is there anything that can be done except for taking these drugs?

These drugs prevent HSV from multiplying and are effective when taken in pill form prior to an outbreak of the virus. Topical antiviral creams containing acyclovir (Zovirax) or penciclovir (Denavir) may also help in limiting the extent or duration of lesions if applied promptly to affected areas.
I am also on Valtrex and I continue to get outbreaks but they last for a few days and then go away for weeks, sometimes months before I get another. My spouse who also has herpes does not take an antiviral so that is why I believe I still get my outbreaks. Are you still engaging in intercourse while having outbreaks, maybe that is whey they aren't getting better. Also, I'm not sure what famvir is, but maybe it is stronger than Valtrex and will help you.
But like 15 days from now before i had this occurence on the head and joined part of the penis these 3-4 watery bumps i went to some other dermatologist he couldnt diagnosed it and suggested me to take Augmentin 625mg antibiotique for 5 days course and to apply Fucidin -H cream and in 5 days that outbreak was gone but suddenly like yesterdays it had again outbreaked and this time i went to the other specialist and now he has given me zovirax 10g ointment to applicate on the outbreak and famvi
i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
No real outbreaks before this. I went to family doctor and he gave me 500 mg famciclovir. Sores scabed and went away after 1 week. Now the blisters are back in the same place. He has given me zovirax this time. Do outbreaks happen so close together? After 10 years without ant noticeable outbreaks now I have 2 in 2 months?

I started taking Valtrex for Herpes2, and I feel anxious,depressed, and I have been waking up with bad headaches in the middle of the night. I don't know if it is all in my head, because I just tested postive for this, and I have been dealing with this for about 15 yrs. I am still shocked. I have been to several doctors who blew it off as a yeast infection. Does anyone know of any alternatives that work?
most folks who do, experience it initially when diagnosed and go on valtrex and are incredibly stressed. for most , it does come back. I do know of less than a handful of folks who experienced hair loss while on valtrex, they could find no other cause for it and even after stopping the valtrex the hair loss did not stop.
at this point continue to follow up on this with the dermatologist. they are your best bet.
Ob's don't necessarily get less frequent over time. One study showed that 1/4 of folks have less ob's after 5 years of infection, 1/4 had more and the rest all had about the same number of ob's. It's different for everyone and probably has more to do with genetics than anything else.
You are having 6 ob's a year which I would assume is annoying.
I have severe atrophic vaginitis and a history of genital ulceration with odd tingly-burny-itchies for many years. Despite this, I have had a positive test for HSV-2 (2004), followed by a negative western blot about 6+/- mths after my only possible exposure, and at least one additional negative HerpeSelect almost 3 years later.
I went on 500 mg Valtrex daily for suppression. I was also diagnosed and treated for BV and a yeast infection. I went back to my doctor over a week ago because not a day goes by that I don't have pinching. When it is really bad, I take 1g of Valtrex per her instructions. No visible signs of an OB, just constantly pinching feeling. Upping to 1g of Valtrex from the 500mg makes no difference. The BV has never resolved.
Just an update and one more question...
Well it has been three weeks.. I went to an urologist because of a burning sensation when I urinate and asked him if it was an HSV outbreak. I was tested for urine infection and re tested for HSV. He did a visual inspection and informed me that he did not think that was an outbreak because everything looked normal.
The results came in an the UTI test was negative.
If you are looking to reduce transmission to partners, the only known ways to reduce that are to use antivirals (Valtrex, acyclovir, famvir) and condoms, along with avoiding sexual activity when you have any symptoms.
If you are looking to reduce outbreaks, studies are mixed for this.

Do oral and genital herpes occur at the same time sometimes? Meaning if ive had oral herpes since i was a child, and what i suspect is my first outbreak of genital herpes, why are they occuring at the same time?
If i really am having genital herpes, is it possible that the first symptoms are occuring 11/12 weeks after exposure. Symptoms are discharge, itching, red blister.
